Growers
today attempt to simulate seasonal light through the use a
combination
of Sodium Vapor lights and Metal Halide bulbs to produce the
red
and blue light. Traditional lighting fixtures are sufficient for indoor
growth,
however they are highly inefficient and costly. The 3 major issues
with
traditional lights for indoor growing are:
1) Traditional lights are highly inefficient for energy costs and;
2) Traditional lights degrade in their output very quickly;

The Problem with Sodium Vapor Fixtures
Sodium vapor fixtures are intended to resemble late summer and harvest light for
indoor plants. The issue with sodium vapor fixtures the primary lumen output is very
low and inefficient around the 642-670 nanometer wavelength range. The chart below
demonstrates the average distribution of relative energy by wavelength.
As evidenced by the figure below the effective output of a Sodium Vapor fixture within
the 660NM wavelength is less than 10%.

Effective Growth Ranges for Plants
Light alone is not sufficient for plant growth. Plants
rely on specific wavelengths of light to simulate
outside seasonal conditions. The table below shows
what sciences has shown to be the most effective
wavelengths of light to stimulate plant growth:
If the average power consumption of a sodium vapor light is approximately 400 watts.
We can assume the average lumen output of the fixture is approximately 18,000
lumens or a 45lm/w efficacy after 60 days of usage. Of those 18,000 lumens, based on
the chart above, only 7-10% of those lumens are useable to plants. This means a 400
watt sodium vapor fixture only puts out 1,260 useable lumens for an efficiency rating of
3.15 lumens per watt.

The Problem with Metal Halide Fixtures
Similar to sodium vapor, Metal Halide fixtures are highly inefficient in delivery useable
light. The net result is an increase energy cost and slower, less consistent plant
growth. Metal Halide fixtures are an attempt to provide similar lighting conditions to the
winter and spring seasons which focus on the 439 – 469 nanometer wavelengths
If the average power consumption of a metal halide fixture is approximately 400 watts.
We can assume the average lumen output of the fixture is approximately 20,000
lumens or a 50lm/w efficacy after 60 days of usage. Of those 20,000 lumens, based on
the chart above, only 15-20% of those lumens are useable to plants. This means a 400
watt metal halide fixture only puts out 3,000 useable lumens for an efficiency rating of
15 lumens per watt.
