The Adventures of Herman the Hamster
by Andie,, age 14
The Chess Club
by Kevin, age 7
Hello there! My name is Herman and I am a hamster.
I am a well-dressed opera singer. All of my clothes are
homemade. I can also play the piano. Let me tell you
how I came to live here. I came on a cargo ship. While
we were at sea we were caught in a monsoon. I heard a
frightened squeak and I performed the heroic deed of
rescuing a small dormouse. The dormouse’s name was
George, We became best friends and I knew that this
was going to be a long term relationship. When we got
to New York I looked in the newspaper for an occupation opening. Right before my eyes there was my dream
job, a singer at the famous Metropolitan Opera! That
was the reason I came to New York, to become a singer
at the world famous Metropolitan Opera ! George and I
went to the interview. When I arrived, all of the people
were outraged that they were going to hire a hamster to
be a singer in the opera. They all thought that it was a
disgrace to the opera to let me be an opera singer. The
owner did not care, so he hired me anyway. Ok, well
bye for now. Next time you will find out what happens.
The Roselle Library has a Chess Club that I think
is very fun. I will tell you why it is so much fun in
this article. The best part is that you get to pick who
you want to play. Another fun thing is that you keep
track of who wins or looses. The last fun part is that
you can bring your own chess board.
The chess club start at 1:30. The lady says sit
down and find a partner. The lady also takes attendance. Then you get to play chess.
Kids stand up when they’re through playing chess.
When kids don’t have anybody to play chess against
they sometimes watch other games being played.
They might play the person all over again.
When players don’t agree on a move they could
ask the professionals at chess. Another thing they
might do is ask another player . Last of all you could
agree on it.
I hope you enjoyed these facts about the Chess
Club. I think you would like to join
our club.

What's Up With Kids
! Story
Natasha’s
by Renna, age 11
A long time ago when blacks were treated badly there lived a girl named Natasha. She was a little black girl
that was about 7 years old. She had long black hair that was braided all over her head with barrettes at the end
of her braids. She wore white gym shoes at size one. They were so worn out from the wear and tear that they
were falling apart. Natasha heard about Martin Luther King Jr. and loved what he was doing and wanted to
join him with the civil rights movement. So Natasha went to the walk to Birmingham. She went to the front of
her line by Martin Luther King Junior and told him that she really loved what he was doing. She told him she
wanted to join him for the fight to be equal. Martin looked down at Natasha and asked, “How old are you little girl?” Natasha answered “ 7 ”. Then he said, “Well stay by me and we’ll make a good team”. “By the way
what’s your name?” “Natasha”, said the little girl; Martin just nodded. Natasha always stayed by Martin and
looked up at him as a mentor. She was always with him. Natasha went to all the walks, sit-ins, and anything
for the fight. She was willing to do anything it took to stop segregation. Natasha went to the “I Have a Dream”
speech. She cheered and clapped and loved what Martin Luther King Jr. was saying.
6 months to a year passed:
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Natasha was extremely sad. She cried all day and all night. Natasha
still wanted to be equal but she didn’t know how. She was just a little girl, but what could she do?
She just had to get that spirit throughout the whole world.

The Dragonriders Of Pern
“Sound the Klaxon Thread’s Falling!”
“Everyone inside and watch for them!”
picture and story by Elizabeth, age 12
The Dragonriders of Pern is a trilogy of Ann
McCaffrey’s greatest stories. The first book in the trilogy is Dragonflight. It takes place in Ruthahold
where Lisa, a slave, saves the life of baby Jaxon from
his cruel father and soon becomes Weyrewomen of
Bendonhold.
In Dragonquest, the second book, Finor Weigre is leader of Benden Were. She is on a guest for
young Dragonriders for the queen.
The last book in the trilogy is The White
Dragon. Lord Jaxon feels sorry for the undersized
dragon and does impressions to him. Many object to
his being a dragonrider. He does find his place at the
end. These books are in the
Adult, science fiction area at the
library. So, grab a book and come
to Pern!

Magic Tree House
Spring Hills Winter Olympics
By Scott, age 9
by Andrea, age 10
Did you know that the Roselle Public Library has
lots of Magic Tree House books? They are really
good! The characters are Jack and Annie Morgan.
Jack and Annie live in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania.
Jack is eight years old and Annie is seven.
They find this tree house filled with books. Here
are some of the titles: “ Mummies in the Morning”,
“ Dinosaurs Before Dark”, “Ghost town at Sundown”, and “Dolphins at Daybreak”. There is a
special book for Christmas and it is called
“Christmas in Camelot”.
There are about 10 chapters in all of the books.
I read these books by myself. My teacher has
every one of these books. Look for the author of
the Magic Tree House books - Mary Pope Osborne.
Now sit down, grab a pillow and get ready for
some fun and adventures!
Spring Hills School had the Olympics during gym
time, throughout the week of the Olympics. Our
school had an opening ceremony to represent the
flags of our countries that we picked and the flags
that we made in art class. Before the ceremony each
class had one person to pass the flame to the next
class, until it reached the last person which was our
school secretary. The superintendent came and told
us some facts about the Olympics and about the
events. We lit the torch in the gym.
Throughout the week at gym time we did one of
the events. The first event was speed skating. The
way we did it was by wearing huge slippers and
sliding on the slippery gym floor. Another event we
had was curling. The way we did the curling was by
taking Frisbees and sliding them across the floor
into squares. Each square equaled a number of
points. The next event we did was hockey. We did
this event by having one goal and using a hockey
stick and 4 pucks and hitting them into the goal. We
tried to get as many pucks into the goal as we
could. The last event was the luge. The way we did
the luge was by standing gym mats up to make a
maze. Then we took three scooters and tied them together. Last, someone would push the person on the
scooters ,( lying on their back), through the maze
while being timed. Sounds tough???? Well it is!!!
At the closing ceremony we gave out medals that
Mrs. Beard made with colored foil. The different
kinds of medals you could get were gold, silver,
bronze, or a green medal that says you participated
in the Spring Hills Winter Olympics. My team was
Norway, and we got a gold medal for hockey!
Our gym teacher was the one that extinguished
our flame , announcing the end of the Winter
Olympics. “ I was sure glad that I was a part of
the Spring Hills Winter Olympics !”

The Paper Needs You
by Ryan, age 9
The paper needs you because it might not stay
around without you. Not enough kids are participating, for a town the size of Roselle. Another reason is that there might not be enough
articles to fill an issue. “Parents, the news articles are fun to write, and kids like to see their
work published”. Sometimes at the meetings
you can have pizza, juice, cookies or donuts.
You can pick what you want to write.
In the paper you can write jokes, book talks,
things going on in the library, and things going
on in the world. Your work will get published,
put in the newsletter, and put on the Internet.
You might get an award in the mail.
To conclude this article, you should join the
paper. You will find it fun, rewarding and
something to be proud of. That’s why you
should join the paper.
Take the words right out of his mouth!
