This tour will lead you off the beaten track, on a subterranean journey back in time
Thirty feet underground lies a fascinating world of ancient wonders. Specially designed to provide you with a memorable experience and broaden your knowledge of Rome’s buried treasures and hidden layers, this
tour will take you off the beaten track, on a subterranean journey back in
time. One of Imago Artis Tour’s professional guides will lead you beneath
the hustle and bustle of modern day Rome, to a silent, eerie city of villas,
baths, crypts, necropolises, and aqueducts. You will roam through the
underground maze of the catacombs, whose tunnels, burial chambers
and wall decorations provide a rare glimpse into the earliest centuries
of Christian faith. You will have the opportunity to visit the impressive
three-levelled church of San Clemente, a 12th century church that was
low activity
built on top of a 4th century basilica, which in turn was erected over a 3rd
century pagan temple dedicated to the god Mithras, a 2nd century domus
and Roman remains from the 1st century. The guided tour will also lead
you beneath the 5th century church of St. John and Paul, to the Case
Romane al Celio, an extraordinary archaeological complex of residential
buildings from the Roman era, decorated with stuccos and magnificent
frescoes dating back to the 3rd century. San Nicola in Carcere’s underground levels are also included in the tour. These house the remains of
three pagan temples dedicated to Janus, Juno and Hope - fascinating
excavations from the Republican era.
