MYP Year 4/IB 9th Grade English Mount Pleasant High School Summer Reading 2014 Ms. Agriesti & Ms. Pritchett 80 Points Over the course of the school year in IB English 9 we will focus on the ways in which writers use text as a vehicle to comment and reflect on the local and global issues within the society we live in. This summer you will read two selections, one fiction and one non-fiction to kick off this journey into reading, analyzing, and evaluating text as an IB 9 Learner: Text #1: The Maze Runner by James Dashner (Fictional Young Adult Literature) Brief Description: Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. Assignment: Quote Log + IB Global Contexts Chart (attached) Text #2: I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai (Non-Fictional Young Adult Memoir) Brief Description: When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.
