a word (e.g., belligerent, bellicose, rebel).
c. SWBAT use reference materials to find the pronunciation, meaning,
and the origin of unfamiliar words.
d. SWBAT guess at the meaning of a word and then double check to see if
s/he is right by using a dictionary.

language, word relationships, and nuances
in word meanings.
5. SWBAT identify examples of figurative language, recognize how words
relate to each other, and recognize the slight differences in word
meanings based on how they are used (e.g., literary, biblical, and
mythological allusions) in context.
b. SWBAT use the relationship between particular words (e.g.,
synonym/antonym, analogy) to better understand each of the words.
c. SWBAT explain the difference between words with similar definitions
(e.g., refined, respectful, polite, diplomatic, condescending ).
