Colours and Shapes Dear Parents, During this term our topic in the Baby room will be Colours and Shapes. This topic will start on the week beginning 4/1/16. Our intended, overall learning objective for the children during this topic is for us to: Encourage the children to be able to recognise basic shapes and primary colours. We will be planning activities to encourage sorting of colours, shapes and sizes and encouraging the children to learn names of shapes and colours during adult led activities. Through observing the children and their interests we have noticed that the children enjoy exploring with different colours and shapes in their everyday play. We will build on these interests through planned activities such as coloured water, paint, play dough and sensory exploration. Adult led activities will include sorting objects into size or shape, mark making on pre-cut shapes such as circles, squares, triangles and using flash cards to recognise shapes and colours. During this topic our planners will be displayed on our planning board for you to look at which include our topic plans and other weekly activities. Below are a few things we shall be doing with your children, based around the following themes and their interests: Looking at different colours and shapes books Using different colours during messy play like red gloop, blue play dough or green water etc. Decorating pre-cut shapes of circles, squares, triangles and stars in primary colours Sensory exploration, hiding and finding picture cards in shredded paper, water, soil, ice etc. Sorting objects into categories according to size, shape or colours Looking at flash cards of shapes and colours during small group times to encourage naming of colours and shapes. You may also like to talk about the topic with your children at home. Here are a few ways you could bring this topic to life in your home environment: Use different coloured toys or shapes in the bath each night to talk about Look at shapes and colours from around the home or in the outside environment Make a colour/shape sorting game to play at home Cook biscuits in different shapes and ice in different colours Play with boxes of different sizes Look at inset puzzles to complete We hope you find all the above information useful. If you would like any further information about our topic please look at our planners or ask a member of staff to go through the activities with you.
