One day before the plenary session, the CoR will be holding a conference on "Digital Agenda for Europe"
The event will be the fifth in a series of seven covering the Europe 2020 Strategy flagship initiatives. Local
policy approaches and good practices will be discussed, together with lessons learnt from successful
transnational cooperation. Aside from the CoR president and Vice-President speakers will include:

Following Croatia's accession to the EU on 1 July, a Croatian national delegation will join the EU's
Committee of the Regions helping shape and influence EU legislation. This historic landmark brings with it
a significant change in the economic, social and political relationship between Croatia's local and regional
authorities and the European Union.
This newly founded relationship therefore raises many questions:

What impact will EU accession have on the future of Croatia's local and regional authorities?
What are the next steps on consolidating this relationship at a local and regional level?
How can the Committee support Croatia to further promote decentralisation?
What experience and knowledge can Croatia bring to the European Union?
President Valcárcel will be joined by the Head of the CoRs' Croatian Delegation, Vojko Obersnel (Mayor
of Rijeka) who will answer questions from press.

The CoR President will award the EER label to three best regional strategies for entrepreneurial
development. After the ceremony, at 17.30 the regional representatives will meet the press at the
CoR press corner, outside the plenary room.

The Committee of the Regions
The Committee of the Regions is the EU's assembly of regional and local representatives. The mission of
its 344 members from all 27 EU Member States is to involve regional and local authorities and the
communities they represent in the EU's decision-making process and to inform them about EU policies.
The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council are obliged to consult the
Committee in policy areas affecting regions and cities. It can appeal to the EU Court of Justice if its rights
are infringed or it believes that an EU law violates the subsidiarity principle or fails to respect regional or
local powers.
