What can we learn from NGC1277??
IMF-slope vs velocity dispersion
IMF-slope vs velocity dispersion
Velocity dispersion is not causing
the observed IMF variation in ETGs

What can we learn from NGC1277?
It opens the study in full detail of the properties of the
early Universe
●
Massive galaxies formed the bulk of their stellar masses
in very short time-scales (~100 Myrs)
●
The IMF gradient of NGC1277 does not follow what is
observed in nearby (slow rotating-) massive galaxies
●
It is not the velocity dispersion what is driving the
observed IMF-slope variation in ETGs

What is next?
●
What was the primordial population of globular clusters?
High resolution imaging with HST
●
What is the distribution of dark matter in the primordial galaxies?
Very deep 3D spectroscopy with PMAS/PPAK IFU
High resolution K-band NIRI ALTAIR/LGS AO with GEMINI
plus WHT/GTC spectroscopic data
