Friendship is Important
By: Danielle Hardy
If you have friends you won’t be lonely. Maybe you like
to be alone, that’s fine! Just remember, it’s fun to have friends,
because they are always there for you. Here and there, I asked
people what they think of friendship.
Mrs. Shaffer thinks, “It’s the greatest gift that you can
receive, and give.”
Emily said, “It’s really important, and I don’t think
anyone can be happy without any friends.”
Jase thought, “Once you have a friend, you should keep
them as a friend.”

As you can see, people love friendship. It’s everywhere
and you can’t avoid it. And to me, friendship is the thing that
keeps the world going around. Besides, friends are people you
know all your life. Friends are usually a huge impact on your

All-Exclusive Interview on Mrs. March
By: Paige Hohman
By Ashleigh Brady and Hannah Groft
“Wow! That tastes different.” You know what
they mean. Everyone’s asking it. Is cafeteria food
better this year or last year? You may be asking, why
are all the changes in the cafeteria happening? The
cafeteria changed to a new program called NutriKids.
They are trying to make school lunches even
healthier. Do you like this idea or not?
Do you know someone who has been working 17
years as a principal? You guessed it, Mrs. March! When she
was little she never wanted to be a principal, but instead
Mrs. March wanted to be a nurse. She had been working
as a nurse for a while but then became a teacher. While
Mrs. March was a teacher, the principal of the school she
was teaching at told her she should become a principal
because she would be great at it. She said that talking to
kids is the best part of her job. Mrs. March got an award
for reading recovery. She is proud of her work.
Here is what some students think:
McKenna Cotrell: “No, because I think some food is
artificial.”
Jazmin Mann: “I like their nachos!”
Erica Pepler: “ I like the P.B.J.’s”
Maddie Moore: “I think the food was much better
last year because it’s healthier and it tasted good.”
As you can see, many people have different
opinions. Some like last year’s food and some like this
year’s food. No matter what you think, the cafeteria
ladies are very good cooks and we should be
thankful.
Mrs. March was born in York Hospital and grew up
in a small town called Shippensburg. Her favorite activity
was being around her horse Vicky, a black mare. She loves
all different types of food. Chinese and Mexican are two of
her favorites. Mrs. March has three kids: Zachary is 24
years old and is a soldier, Joshua is 22 years old at Penn
State studying in college, and Lauren is 21 years old at a
college in Pittsburgh. Her husband Randy is a Tech-Ed high
school teacher. Mrs. March owns two dogs: Bailey [a
Bichon] and Buddy [a Cocker Spaniel]. Do you think Mrs.
March is an interesting principal?
Wow, Look at That!

Book Recommendations
Black History Month
By: Evan Stein
By: Maha Madapoosi and Dylan Ergott
The first book series students recommend is The
Hunger Games Series. These books go into the future where
every year a game is held… a game for life! The country is
separated twelve districts. One girl and one boy are chosen
to fight in an arena. Not just a regular fight; a fight to the
death. Katniss Everdeen is an average sixteen year old girl.
Katniss takes her sister’s place as tribute and is put into the
arena. Warning: this book includes some violent scenes.
Please check with your parents/guardian before you read it.
This book was recommended by Camden Schanberger.
Black history month was started by Dr. Carter G
Woodson back in 1926. If you do the math, you will
know that it has been around for 86 years. However, it
started out being called Negro History Week. Black
history month is all about honoring blacks and what
they have been through.
The second book series that has been
recommended is the Harry Potter series. The Harry Potter
series is about a boy whose parents were wizards. He gets a
message that he will be moved to the famous wizard school
of Hogwarts. This series has a good amount of action and
adventure. This book series was recommended by Julia
Hagen and Emily Sarro.
The third book series recommendation is for girls
mainly. It is called Dear, Dumb Diary. Dear, Dumb Diary is
about a girl who writes about her enemies and friends.
Basically it’s a girl’s version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
These books were recommended by Team
Dedication students. Remember to ask other students for a
good book. You need a book, so why not try one of these?
Some other recommendations
The Maze Runner
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
First, Henry “Box” Brown is honored. He was
born into slavery in 1815 in Louis Country, Virginia.
When he was 15 years old, he was sold into a
plantation in Richmond. A few years later Henry met
Nancy Brown. Nancy and Henry eventually got married,
and had 3 kids. Soon, Henry’s family was taken away
and sold. But later that week, Henry craved for
freedom so to get a day off work, he poured hot boiling
acid on his wrist and it burned. It paid off because he
was put into a box and shipped to Philadelphia where
he later became a free slave.
Second, the person who broke the color barrier
was Martin Luther King Jr. Martin was born on January
15, 1929. I’m pretty sure you know that Martin had a
dream. This is his dream: “I have a dream that blacks
and whites could be friends.” Sadly, Martin Luther King
died on April 4th, 1968.
As you can see, Black history month is very
important to understanding equal rights. Some other
important people that were important are Harriet
Tubman and Rosa Parks. Hopefully, now you know a
little bit more about Black History month.
Poppin’ Up Punxsutawney
Peyton Manning’s Job in Jeopardy
By: Keira Andrews, Olivia Orendorf, and Abby
Rinehart
By: Alex Vaclavik
Just popping up to teach you a little bit
about Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day
officially started on February 2nd, 1887.
Pennsylvania’s
groundhog
is
named
Punxsutawney Phil. He is also known as the
most famous groundhog.
This year he saw his shadow, which
unfortunately means we have to deal with 6
more weeks of winter. Some local members of
Team Dedication have many opinions. Charles
said, “I am happy because I have been waiting
for a big snow storm, and maybe it will happen
in the remainder of winter.” Lyndsay said, “I
am mad because I like spring and summer
better because of the warmth. Maha agrees
with Lyndsay. Paul declared, “I am so happy
because it will hopefully snow on my birthday
if I am lucky.”
Groundhog Day is important; many
people attend the special events on February
2nd. Most people want Phil to not see his
shadow so spring will be on its way.
Unfortunately some people’s dreams didn’t
come true. Groundhog Day is very educational
but people say they wouldn’t want to trade
groundhogs for meteorologists. If you want to
research more about groundhogs get online
and do it today!
The Indianapolis Colts are thinking
about releasing or getting rid of their star
quarterback, Peyton Manning. The Colts
president says, “If Peyton Manning does not
get his full strength back soon; we will have
no other choice but to release him.”
Peyton Manning had neck surgery last
offseason to repair a nerve. The last time he
took a snap was January, 2011. Since then,
the Colts have a record of two wins, and
fourteen losses.
However, there are a few teams that
are interested in Peyton Manning. All of
these teams are in need of a quarterback.
The New York Jets, The Washington
Redskins, The Arizona Cardinals, The
Tennessee Titans, and The Miami Dolphins.
There have also been some rumors that
Manning may retire.
As you probably know, Eli Manning
(Peyton’s brother) has just won his second
Super Bowl. Commentators on the NFL
network are saying Eli might become as
great as Peyton. Do you think he will be?
Will this take away Peyton’s reputation? Will
this injury come back to haunt him? Well,
we will just have to wait and see!
What’s Your Favorite Type of Music?
All Exclusive On Mrs. Pepper
By Maddie Moore
By Tatiana Matuszweski
Ye haw! Rock ‘N Roll! Or Diggy
Diggy Dog Dig! What’s your favorite
type of music? My favorite type of
music is country but that’s my opinion.
I want to know yours! So I asked people
what they think. Let’s see what
Hannah, Cole, Wesley, and Kylie have
to say:
In room 609 a chocolate loving,
charismatic, child friendly teacher, is a teacher
who teaches to her class. Mrs. Pepper is known
as having the prettiest nails on Team
Dedication.
Hannah says, “I like country
because I like Taylor Swift”.
“Rap because its fast and I like
the songs,” declares Cole.
Wesley proclaims that he likes
country because he lives on a farm.
Last but not least, Kylie would
like to say rock, because it makes her
hyper!
Well, now that you have heard
other people’s opinions about their
favorite type of music, take a while and
think about yours. Trust me. My
favorite type of music is changing all
the time.
She has 5 crazy [in a fun way] teens that
live with her and Mr. Pepper, the science
teacher. They’re a happy family who have
different interests but fit together like pieces of
a puzzle.
If you know Mrs. Pepper, you
would know that she absolutely adores
reptiles. She has had an iguana named Bud, a
couple of snakes, colorful fish, and many
turtles. For five years, Mrs. P has been
persuading her husband for another iguana.
She loves all of her pets equally and so does
her family.
Every student agrees that Mrs. Pepper
probably loves chocolate more than anyone. It
runs in her family. Her husband and teens love
it also. “The creamy texture is the best,” she
stated. Mrs. Pepper even has emergency
chocolate hidden in her purse, house, and
school desk! No one knows this but she has
been used as a trash can. I really mean, one of
her students threw up on her. Mrs. Pepper is a
very appreciated teacher and everyone is
happy she is here.

Blast to The Past: Bringing The 20s Back
By Kailee Mundis & Yael Eiben
You may or may not know very much about the 1920s. Well, we’re about to teach you a few
things about what it was like in the 1920s. For example: new inventions were being created and flappers
were taking over/changing fashion styles.
Inventions
Some inventions in the 1920s were:
Hair Dryer --January 3, 1920
Q-Tips –March 6, 1920
Traffic Light --May 5, 1920
Automobile with Combustion Engine --July 30, 1920
Band-Aid --October 10, 1920
Lie Detector --July 22, 1921
Bulldozer --April 15, 1923
Liquid-Fueled Rocket --December 14, 1926
Kool-Aid --June 21, 1927
Bread Slicer --July 24, 1927
Flappers, flappers, flappers. That was all you heard in the 1920s. This style was blowing up! People in the
20s never had seen so many people wearing the same thing. Flappers wore their hair either bobbed or
stringy with a dropped waist-line dress. Styles just keep on changing all the time. Every day we wonder
what fashion was like back then. Well, this is it! Good to get answers to your questions, right?

Caring Kids
By: Maddison Moore
As most of you know, on Monday, February 27, 2012, Major Piazze, from the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, came in to our cove area, and taught us all about what it means to the soldiers fighting for our
freedom, to receive our letters when they are so far away from home. I have interviewed Kelsie Barber
who brought this whole thing together. Here are all of the questions I prepared for her to answer.
I asked Kelsie, if sending the letters to Afghanistan was her idea, and if yes, how she thought of
the idea. She replied with, “Yes, I thought of the idea because I liked how people volunteered for the army,
like some of my mom’s co-workers.” Why did you decide to choose the country Afghanistan? “To answer
you, I thought it would be cool to receive a letter from them! (Of course if they got our letters first) Also,
my mom had a big list of names to send the letters to, that she got from her co-workers, so it would be
easier to send the letters.”
Did you get to pick the soldier that came in to teach us about Afghanistan? “Surprisingly no, I
really wanted the Colonel, David Anderson, to come but he couldn’t make it on the day we had scheduled.”
What were some of the things that the soldiers had wrote back to you? “Some of the things that the
soldiers wrote back to us were: What’s going on in Pennsylvania? And thank you for writing back to us!”
What was your favorite part about the presentation and why? “I’d have to say my favorite part about the
presentation would be, when Major Piazze presented the coin and the certificate because I thought it was
very cool to see coins from a different country.” Did you enjoy the presentation? “Yes! I enjoyed this
presentation a lot!”
Would you ever think of joining the army, before or after the presentation? “Well you see before
the presentation, I wanted to have a job that helped kids with disabilities. So no, I did not think of joining
the army before the presentation.” What about after? “After the presentation, I considered it, but then I
thought and I really wanted job that was close to my family, and close to my home.”
Would you think of this letter writing idea as exciting? “Yes” Would you recommend this to
anyone else, and why? “Yes because it is great to send letters to people that are working and fighting hard
to save our country and grant our freedom.” My last question was is this something you would want to
do in the future? “Yes! I would love to do this in the future!”
This student, Kelsie Barber, got together with her mom and looked into a soldier coming in and
teaching us about how hard it is to, fight for our freedom from so far away from home. I believe that
everyone should do an activity like this, whether it is a soldier, a relative far away from home, or even just
a best friend that you haven’t seen in a while that maybe lives in another country. Anyway, by reading this
article now you know how it makes those people receiving your letters feel.
