Why Diets Don’t Work Before I let you in on the secrets of Why Diet’s Don’t Work, and give you some solutions, I want to help you understand the seven Habits of Highly Miserable and Unhealthy People and why obesity is one of the most serious health problems in America according to Dr. Mitra Ray, Ph.D. Dr. Ray is a research biochemist whose work in cell biology has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the journals Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Journal of Cell Biology. Habits of Highly Miserable and Unhealthy People 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Do not take tips from healthy people. If a healthy person tries to tell you about being healthy, do not take any advice from them. Do not move around very much – sit on your butt as much as you can. Do not drink any water – stick to coffee, soda and alcohol. Do not sleep much and, of course, do not participate in any self hypnosis, meditation or yoga. Do not take any time out for yourself – just burn yourself out as fast as you can. Keep all expensive bad habits; such as alcohol use, cigarette use, and cocaine use. Be critical of everybody who is trying to improve in any way. Do you recognize yourself in any those seven bad miserable habits of unhealthy people? Read on! In addition, Dr. Mitra Ray, Ph.D, states that obesity is one of the most serious health problems today in America. She also answers the question of what gaining 40 pounds does to your health. She gave the following example of what gaining 40 pounds would do to a woman that is 5 feet tall and weighed 110 pounds. Not very good news, is it? Also, in 2007, according to the Department of Health and Human Services - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www. http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity, obesity rates have more than doubled in the state of Louisiana, going from 12.3 percent to 29.8 percent of the population. Louisiana also has the dubious distinction of being ranked one of the four states with the highest obesity ratings coming in a close fourth to the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, as assessed by CDC through phone interviews. The benchmark used by the CDC showed that in our lovely state, the average population is at least 30 pounds overweight. Louisiana has consistently been in the worst five states in other national surveys in which body height and weight are actually measured (www.2theadvocate.com - 08/22/05). These statistics are not exactly the best tourism advertisement for our state, is it? Every week we all hear about this wonderful new magic diet that will allow you to drop 10, 15, or 20 pounds in a mere two weeks AND you get to eat all the chocolate bars, chips, and triple fudge sundaes you want. Plus, you won’t have to do any form of exercise (unless wearing a path in the flooring on your kitchen floor going from your refrigerator to the couch counts!) and never break a sweat. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the ‘new’ diet will also supply you with every piece of food you will need to eat for the next 12 days for a limited time offer of only $500 extra! Wow! How wonderful does that sound to you? Unfortunately, there is no magic diet and unless you seriously want to consider liposuction as a firm alternative to managing your weight, you’d better not sign up for the latest and greatest ‘knock off the weight now’ fad. So, you ask yourself, “How can I become the slim and trim person I so desperately want to be? How can I get back to being that slender and sexy lady I used to be?” The first thing you must understand is, DON'T DIET! All you have to do is just ZIP your mouth for awhile, starve yourself to death, and don’t eat. Guess what? You will lose weight. But, what happens when you unzip your mouth? You got it. You go back to your old bad eating habits and you usually gain back all of the weight that you lost plus some. So, the key to lasting and permanent weight loss and good health is to make gradual, but steady, “healthy lifestyle changes." Frankly, you never gained those extra 15 pounds around your midsection in 12 days so why do you believe they’ll magically disappear in the same amount of time? But there is hope. Read on! Linda’s Healthy Lifestyle Steps I’m going to share with you four of my eleven healthy lifestyle steps that my private weight loss clients learn that you need to consider TODAY if you are really serious about achieving your weight loss goals. Bringing these four, simple and easy healthy lifestyle steps into your daily routine, will show up as lasting rewards in your TOMORROW’s. Linda’s Healthy Lifestyle Step # 1: First, learn to consume a little less than half your body weight in pounds, in ounces of water daily. For example, a 120 pound woman should drink approximately 50 ounces of water daily. That translates to 6 ¼ - 8 ounce glasses per day. Add 8 more ounces for every 25 pounds you are overweight. Yes, that’s a lot of water, but considering that the human body is made up of between 5565% of water, it constantly needs to be replenished. Besides, water makes you ‘feel’ full and often times actual thirst is mistaken for hunger, and we just automatically shove something into our mouth to appease the feeling. The next time you have an urge to grab a quick snack, grab a bottle or glass of plain, oldfashioned water. Plus you’ll be amazed at the cleansing benefits of drinking lots of water will have on your hair, nails and skin. Congratulations! If you do this one step alone, you can check off Number 3 on the “Highly Miserable and Unhealthy People list that says, “Do not drink any water – stick to coffee, soda and alcohol.” Linda’s Healthy Lifestyle Step # 2: Second, learn to exercise. Do you know what the best exercise program is? The one that you will do! I’m so sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but yes, you are going to have to get up off your butt and move! Just incorporating small lifestyle changes into your daily routine will help your weight loss efforts enormously. Try doing a few of the following every day and watch the effects these steps will have on your waistline: 1. Park your vehicle at the end of the parking lot, in a safe place, at work and walk to the front door. Do the same thing when out shopping at your local mall. Extra steps add up quickly. Perhaps you’ll be the highest bowler in the building that day, but your biggest win will be the weight you’ll lose while having a few laughs at the same time. 3. Play a game of tag with your children (or grandchildren) instead of sitting playing a board or computer game. Not only will being outside in the fresh air benefit your lungs, both you and the children will get some much needed ‘fun’ exercise at the same time. 4. And, if all else fails, the next time you watch TV, do the 2 step. Yes, I mean the dance move. This is great exercise that anyone can do. Guess what? You will burn calories, and when you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight. Here’s how to do the 2 step. Humor me and stand up right now. (Hopefully you are not driving while reading this!) Now, put your two feet together. Next, slide your right foot to the right, and then slide your left foot next to your right foot. Now do the reverse. Slide your left foot to the left, and then slide your right foot next to your left foot. Yes, the 2-step counts as exercise, and guess what? You do not even need to leave home to do it! What is your excuse now? Continue doing this 2 step exercise starting with 10 minutes, working up to 30, 45 minutes or an hour a day. Anyone can do this, even you! There are tons of other small ways you can incorporate movement into your daily routine. Small changes will reap big rewards in the long run so try one of these suggestions today! If you do this step, you can check off bad habit Number 2 of the Highly Miserable and Unhealthy People list that says,” Do not move around very much – sit on your butt as much as you can.” Linda’s Healthy Lifestyle Step # 3: Third, learn to eat seven to thirteen servings of fresh raw fruits and vegetables daily, which is what the U.S. Government recommends for optimal health. This is known as ‘whole food nutrition’ (eat the ‘whole’ apple, the ‘whole orange’, etc.) Fruits and vegetables are important components of a healthy diet, and their sufficient daily consumption could help prevent major health problems such as cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. Yes, your mother was right when she nagged you to eat your broccoli! Linda’s Healthy Lifestyle Step # 4: And fourth, learn to reduce your stress which will allow you to sleep better. I recently attended a seminar and learned these startling facts about our belief system: When you are 6 years old, 60% of the belief of who you are has already been formed. When you are 8 years old, 80% of the belief of who you are has already been formed, and When you are 14 years old, 99% of the belief of who you are has already been formed. WOW! • • • That’s great news if all of your beliefs about yourself are positive, but what if they are all negative? Is there anything that you can do to change those negative beliefs to positive ones? Absolutely! Let me tell you “my story” of how I learned to change my negative belief system and why I became interested in helping people improve their nutrition. Seventeen years ago, I was the most negative, unhappy, depressed, and 40 pound overweight person you could ever meet. I thought I was dumb, stupid, worthless and a failure.
