5th Floor Meeting
Cockles of my Heart
BY J UDY
You warmed them and filled them with
gratitude for the good wishes you sent during
my fortunately brief hospitalization.
My fall, caused by loss of consciousness due to
dehydration, left a bruised back, regret for the
worry I caused and served as a reminder
to drink ? ounces of fluid daily (lots). The
amount is actually controversial.
The Fifth Floor will meet Tuesday, January 3,
2017 (can you believe it?) at 4:00 in the
Multipurpose Room. Bill Gressman, Chairman
of our Finance Committee, will talk about how
residents’ priorities are factored into the
annual budget. In February we’ll be meeting in
the “701 Lounge” off the Bistro for a very brief
business meeting followed by our 5th Floor
Party. Details to follow on January 3.
Grateful to you all,
Elizabeth

Beaded fringe bounced to the syncopated
sounds of jazz, while illegal hooch sloshed in
long stemmed glasses. The bull market
prevailed and it didn’t matter what you bought;
stocks only went up. Names of the sport heroes
still echo today: Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth,
Jack Dempsey and Man O’ War. On the surface,
it was a glittering moment in time captured by
F. Scott Fitzgerald in stories like The Great
Gatsby and “Bernice Bobs Her Hair.” The
exhibit features a cross-section of the period
with fashions from Paris, speakeasy cocktails,
red hot jazz and weekend recreations. Don’t
miss this exciting exhibit that shows life in the
1920s like you’ve never seen it before!

Stuart Davis: In Full Swing passes over the
artist’s earliest efforts to begin in 1921 with his
breakthrough paintings of tobacco packages.
Moving ahead through five decades to his final
canvas, the exhibition often strays from
chronology to explore Davis’s habit of recycling
earlier work for new compositions. With more
than one hundred of his most important,
visually complex compositions on view, the
exhibition highlights Davis's ability to assimilate
the imagery of popular culture, the aesthetics
of advertising, the lessons of cubism, and the
sounds and rhythms of jazz into works that
hum with intelligence and energy.
The National Gallery of Art’s East Building was
closed for a few years and re-opened on
September 30, 2016. Check out the newly
renovated and expanded East Building!
