We were thrilled to be able to introduce the members of the New Orford String Quartet as our Artists-inResidence. We warmly welcomed these stellar musicians into our club membership: violinist Jonathan Crow, violinist Andrew Wan, violist Eric Nowlin, and cellist Brian Manker. Coinciding with the three-year period of their residency with us is their major undertaking to play all of Beethoven’s string quartets, with a view to recording them. Friday evening we were privileged to hear one of Beethoven’s profound late quartets – the Opus 132 – and to enrich our listening experience by studying the music first. We sat in sofas and armchairs in the lounge as the quartet talked about how the piece was constructed, playing excerpts of the music to illustrate their points. When we reconvened in the library for a performance of the entire piece, the audience sat in rapt attention for the duration and leapt to their feet, applauding, at the last note. Many people commented on how much the pre-concert lecture had increased their appreciation and enjoyment of the music. We then moved through to the dining room where Chef Patrick had a wonderful dinner awaiting us, which no doubt contributed to the animated conversations happening all over the room. The evening ended downstairs in the lounge with Chef’s ‘Chocolate Dreams’ dessert table, as guests mingled and chatted until late evening. It was truly a splendid evening. As one guest, who was enjoying his first visit to the club, commented at the end of the evening, “This is a very civilized and cultured place.” ~ Diana Wiley Thursday, June 18th 6.30pm A casual opportunity to meet with friends and make new acquaintances before the summer season begins. Lebanese Wine Tasting and Dinner 20 of us gathered on April 23 for a tasting of five surprising wines from Lebanon. The tasting was followed by a wonderful ‘Pan-Mediterranean’ buffet, abundantly set out by Chef Patrick and his assistants. The event was something of a tribute to Serge Hochar who was one of the most admired wine producers in the world when he died at the age of 75 in 2014. Hochar’s father founded the Chateau Musar in 1930, after returning to Lebanon from Bordeaux, and we were fortunate to have two of his wines to consider: a 2003 Chateau Musar (Cab/Cinsault/Carignan) and the 2009 Hochar Pere et Fils. Hochar famously said “I know nothing about wine, I know how to make wine, but I know nothing about wine, and each day I discover I know less.” This of course warms the heart of any wine lover who would rather enjoy than talk about wine! We also tasted two other interesting reds: Chateau Ksara (2011) and Chateau Kefraya (2010), along with a clean and refreshing Clos St. Thomas Blanc (2013). Most of us were pleasantly surprised by the idiosyncratic flavours that result from blending cabernet sauvignon with a cinsault or a carignan, two grapes very popular in the region. Discussions were very lively, and everyone had a favourite or two. Upstairs in the library there was a delicious spread of Lebanese mezze (the name for appetizers, pickles and dips), laid out with lamb chops over rice, chicken schwarma, fattoush salad, and an array of desserts. Needless to say, it was an animated crowd enjoying a thoroughly pleasant wine tasting and dinner at the Club. Many thanks to Nico, Chef Patrick et al.
