To the Parish Community of Gesu,
I write to update you on the status of our search for a
pastor to succeed Fr. Snow and Fr. Von Tobel. After much
deliberation and consultation, I am able to report that Fr.
Karl Kiser will be made available to Bishop Lennon with
a recommendation that Fr. Kiser serve as the next pastor
of Gesu. I have communicated this good news to Bishop
Lennon who holds the responsibility of appointing pastors
in the Diocese of Cleveland.
There are a few steps yet to take before I make my final
recommendation to Bishop Lennon. Fr. Kiser will complete
his mission of 16 years at University of Detroit Jesuit High
School in Detroit, MI. During the spring, Fr. Kiser, who
was ordained at Gesu in June 1997, will visit the parish.
The purpose is to learn about the parish, identify areas of
parish life that can build on mutual strengths and common
interests, and recognize areas of possible growth which
could help him and the parish prepare for this new mission.
After he visits, I will formally make Fr. Kiser available to
Bishop Lennon, proposing an appointment to coincide
with the completion of a well-deserved sabbatical in late
fall 2016.
Baptisms
Keith Matthew Schneider,
son of Keith & Crystal Schneider
Rest in Peace
Know you have my deep gratitude for your generosity
in supporting one another through this transitional year.
Although the appointment of a new pastor has extended
beyond our initial expectations, I appreciate your commitment and patience with the process. Your collective
care for this parish has enabled me to respond to needs
across our Midwest Jesuit family of ministries.

Parish Pastoral Council
We are a a faith-filled leadership body, guided by the Holy Spirit and the Gospel,
that works in conjunction with the pastor and parish staff to discern the needs
of the parish and guides the parish in building a strong Catholic faith community.
This group did not meet in January, but shared in the entire Leadership’s meeting
with Jenene Francis, Provincial Assistant for Parishes, to discuss the new pastor
and a dialogue about our parish and the concerns of the Province about the future of
parishes within the Midwest Province of the Jesuits.
Administration Commission
We are being good stewards of our limited resources and are keeping all
channels of communication open.
Collections are behind at this time of year, and there is some concern that it may
affect our budgeting process. The new STREAM Initiative in our school debuted at
an open house on Sunday, January 31, and showcased our new program. We have
raised $1,112,000 of the $1.1 million to launch this.
We are still in the process of searching for a new Development Director and Business
Manager. Construction of the new Baptismal font began on February 1 with an expected completion date by Easter. As part of our Commission’s 2016 goal, the
education plan on our Finances will sponsor Fun Facts in our weekly bulletin.
We had a discussion on the closing of Sacred Heart and St. Clare Schools in order
to form a new merged school (Corpus Christi Academy) on the St. Clare campus. Gesu
has received some inquiries from parents about enrollment. Gesu has directed the
parents to speak with their pastors before making any decisions; our approach is to
maintain our current enrollment policy regarding students from other parishes.

Leadership Meeting - January 2016
Worship Commission
We are a place where people can come for communal prayer and active involvement in parish.
The Worship Commission discussed the need for more leaders for our Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 am
Liturgy. Members will reach out through Gesu Young Families and personal invitation.
Three presentations during the month of January on Baptism and the ministries of our parish were well attended, and
gave greater understanding to the sacrament as well as to the foundation principles of our new font.
The appreciation weekend for our Music Ministry went well! The Evening for our Liturgical Ministers was positive, but we
discussed returning it to the Saturday morning format next year or perhaps a different time in the year.
The work on the Baptismal Font began on Monday, February 1. The Liturgical celebration of the parish’s 90th anniversary
will take place on the Feast of Pentecost at the noon Mass on May 15. The Commission will be actively engaged in the
invitations, outreach to former clergy, principals, teachers, alumni. There was further discussion around the Sunday Mass
schedule.
Outreach Commission
We are sent to care for the sick, those in need and to connect with the inactive.
The Outreach Commission had several discussions this month about a variety of committees here at Gesu. We continue
to assess and look at all aspects to be sure that we are meeting the needs of our fellow parishioners.
Education, Advocacy, and Action will be kicking off a new year with quarterly themes. Stay tuned for upcoming events!
Applications are available for our June Honduras Mission. Applications can be picked up in the Parish Office. We will be
kicking off Lent with CRS Rice Bowls. More information to follow. We also thank Jenene Francis for her time here and the
discussions she led with us and all of leadership.
Community Life Commission
We are building relationships, volunteering and having fun together as a community.
The Community Life Commission met on January 25 at McAuley Hall. The Lenten Soup Dinner, scheduled for Saturday,
February 27, after the 4:30 pm Mass in McAuley Hall, was discussed. Planning has already begun and volunteers will be
needed to help set up, serve and clean up. The Gesu Youth Ministry Spaghetti Dinner, scheduled for Sunday, February 28 in
McAuley Hall after the 5:00 pm Youth Mass, was also discussed. Youth and their families will be encouraged to attend and
volunteers will be needed to help set up, serve and clean up as well. The planning for the Gesu 90th Anniversary Luncheon
has begun. A planning committee is being identified and the setup should be similar to Father Snow’s farewell last year.
Faith Formation Commission
We are committed to lifelong learning and discovering who God is in our lives.
The Faith Formation Comission began discussion on the Pope’s call to care for the Earth in “Laudato Si”, and Gesu School
is currently implementing “green” practices and will continue to improve efforts throughout the school to answer the Pope’s call.
Gesu plans to offer an Ignatian Prayer and Faith Sharing Program based on Gospel contemplations, Lectio Divinia exercises,
and faith-sharing time each month. This is a follow-up to the fall retreat, but all parishioners are welcome. The first informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 17.
The commission also discussed the potential for a Vacation Bible School. Because this would be a new venture for Gesu,
there would be limited enrollment and a need for adult volunteers.
Finally, the first confirmation preparation session was held on January 24. Three additional sessions and a retreat are
scheduled for the confirmandi.
Upcoming Events: Catholic Schools Week (1/31-2/6), Women’s Retreat (2/5-2/6), PSR Family Mass (9:00 am on 2/7),
Rite of Sending (12:00 pm on 2/14) and Rite of Election at St. John’s Cathedral (5:30 pm on 2/14) for RCIA candidates,
Ignatian Prayer and Faith Sharing Program Informational Meeting (7:00 pm on 2/17)

Lent: Fasting & Abstinence
Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday,
February 10, a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of
universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all
who have completed their 18th year and have not yet
reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat
one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to
equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory
for all who have reached their 14th year. If possible, the
fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on
Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the
suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare
ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more
readily His Resurrection. Fridays in Lent are obligatory
days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have
completed their 14th year.

Inter-Parish Mission: Save the Date!
Faith Formation is considering the idea of having a
Vacation Bible School at Gesu this summer. Before
we make a commitment, we are looking for one or two
volunteers who are interested in serving as the organizing
leaders. If you are interested or want more information,
please email Sadie Curtin at [email protected] or
call (216) 932-0617.
JCU will host a lecture called “Asian American Catholics:
Diversity within Diversity” by Dr. Jonathan Tan, Hallinan
Professor of Catholic Studies, Case Western Reserve
University on Thursday, February 11 at 7:30 pm in the LSC
Conference Room. Sponsored by The Institute of Catholic
Studies at John Carroll University. This lecture is free and
open to the public. For additional information, please call
(216) 397-4558.
Mark your calendar for our annual Novena of Grace from
March 4-12. Each year many parishioners gather for this
daily communal prayer experience culminating in the anniversary of the canonization of Saints Ignatius of Loyola
and Francis Xavier – two of the founders of the Society of
Jesus (Jesuits), the religious order whose members serve
at the Church of the Gesu. Join us for prayer and speakers
who will address the meaning of elements that constitute
“the Jesuit tradition.” Watch for details in Gesu publications
and on flyers in the church.
Please save the date for an inter-parish mission that will
change your life. “Rediscover: Mission, Mercy and the
Meaning of Life” will be held March 13-15 at Communion of
Saints Parish and include a simple soup supper each night.
This inter-parish mission will be an inspiring yet practical
experience of dynamic teaching and application of the genius
of Catholicism to every aspect of your life. Keep watching
the bulletin for all the details!
In the Jesuit Tradition
When their plans to go to Venice and then
to the Holy Land collapsed because a war
forced most sea captains to suspend sailings,
Ignatius and Peter offered the infant Society’s
services to the Pope. His first appointment of
a Jesuit was to name Peter Faber a lecturer in Theology
and Scripture at Rome’s Sapienza University. Later, Faber
was commissioned to be present at the Diet of Worms in
Germany, where a conversation was to take place between
Martin Luther and Catholic Church authorities. In this
Lutheran city, Peter Faber preached, heard confessions,
and led interested people through the Spiritual Exercises,
the method of retreat composed by Ignatius from which
Peter himself had benefitted before his ordination.
First Step Program
Under the guidance of Bishop Richard Lennon, the Tribunal
of the Diocese of Cleveland during the Year of Mercy, seeks
to embrace in a wider manner those who feel themselves
estranged from the Church. Therefore, using webinar technology, six parishes have been designated to host the First
Step Program.
This program is designed to assist those considering or
seeking an annulment. This offering is in addition to the
previously announced programs. The program will begin
at 7:00 pm in each of the following parishes on February
17. The parishes are: St. Christopher Parish, Holy Family
Parish, Stow, St. Mary Parish, Wooster, St. Gabriel Parish,
St. Jerome Parish The sessions will take place in the
parish school. Trained personnel will be at each site to
facilitate the session. There is no need to preregister.
