According the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops… The ministry of justice and service nurtures in young people a social consciousness and a commitment to a life of justice and service rooted in their faith in Jesus Christ, in the Scriptures, and in Catholic social teaching… from Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry. At Annunciation Parish… In an effort to follow the USCCB’s vision of justice and service, all students in Grade 7 through Confirmation will be required to participate in mercy work hours. Along with class attendance and performance, completion of service hours will also determine advancement into the next class level. For students in Confirmation, service must be completed 5 weeks prior to the Confirmation Ceremony. Mercy work cards due dates for all classes will be announced later in the year. Keep track of your mercy work hours and your card throughout the year. THIS CARD IS YOUR ONLY PROOF THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE REQUIRED HOURS. Mercy Works Hour Requirements… Grade 7 – 10 hours of service Confirmation I (Grade 8) – 10 hours of service Confirmation II (Grade 9) – 10 hours of service Simple jobs (i.e. babysitting, normal household chores) Something you are paid for Everyday tasks You will be credited for community service acts performed with your school or other organizations, i.e. Boy Scouts. Prayer of Service At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry and you gave me food to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.” Hungry not only for bread – but for love Naked not only for clothing – but naked of human dignity and respect Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks – but homeless because of rejection. This is Christ in distressing disguise. ~ Mother Theresa ~
