JOB TITLE: Laboratory Technician – Genotyping

PROJECT: Whole Cohort SNP Genotyping

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Team Leader, Senior Project Manager
HOURS OF WORK: Average 38.5h pw; 7 day fortnight (4 weeks of days; 4 weeks of nights)
RATE OF PAY: £7.50ph (20% uplift for night shifts)
LOCATION: UK Biobank, Units 1-4 Spectrum Way, Adswood, Stockport, Cheshire, SK3 0SA
and Wythenshawe (occasionally)
JOB DESCRIPTION
UK Biobank will recruit Laboratory Technician(s) to join its genotyping laboratory team in
Stockport. The laboratory team will be responsible for approving picked samples, extracting
DNA and preparing DNA for shipping. Additionally the laboratory team will undertake
quality control checks and maintenance to safeguard the quality of samples. Working within
the laboratory team, you will extract DNA from buffy coat using automated systems (and manual
where required), update the LIMS to track samples and ship samples. Other general laboratory tasks
will be the responsibility of Laboratory Technicians, such as cleaning and maintenance of the
automated systems.
MAIN TASKS – PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES





Extract DNA on robotic systems
Extract DNA manually
Update LIMS
Perform daily maintenance on robotic systems
Clean the laboratory





Pick samples from storage
Report processing and equipment issues
Prepare samples for shipping
Maintain robotic systems
Any other reasonable task
BACKGROUND AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS





Experience performing genetic and/or molecular biology assays
Knowledge of DNA extraction – manual and automated
Knowledge of Maxwell DNA extraction and automated sample processing
Knowledge of LIMS systems
Ability to undertake repetitive processes
EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS




BSc in a relevant scientific area (higher degree preferable)
Sound knowledge of molecular biology, in particular PCR
Awareness of the Human Tissue Act
Full clean UK driving licence preferred
