JERSEY SHORE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Middle School
November, 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians of Middle School students,
It is well known that middle school students have a lot of “sorting out” to do regarding what is said in fun or with mean
intent, especially towards others they do not know or points of view they do not understand. This school year on every
Day 3 the middle school students have an opportunity to discuss bullying issues appropriately. This month’s ROCK event
is a movie which depicts people striving to overcome being bullied.
The move selected for this ROCK Event is “42”. Here is what one movie reviewer wrote:
Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two
men-the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey-whose brave stand against prejudice forever
changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history
when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal
also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from
every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident
could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking-ultimately winning over fans and his
teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.
(quoted from: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/42_2013/)
The movie does have scenes with dialogue that is racist and there is use of unacceptable racist words. It has a scene
which includes physical violence between adults of different races and one scene where there is evidence of physical
violence.
For these reasons, this permission slip is being sent to all parents/guardians whose children may have earned the privilege
to watch the movie. We want parents/guardians to consider the type of movie we will show and to what the students will
be viewing.
Please consider this message and talk with your son/daughter about whether or not he/she should be included in this event.
If you do not want your child to participate in viewing the movie we will make sure the students who are not attending the
movie, have time to participate in table games and socializing in the cafeteria.
