Water has the ability to self ionize: This means that all aqueous solutions have a small concentration of H3O+(aq) and OH-‐(aq)

pH is a system that is used to express [H3O+(aq)]
it is a more convenient way to express very small ion concentrations
Notes: as [H3O+(aq)] increases, pH goes down
pH is usually a number between 0 and 14, but it is possible to have a negative pH
in a pH value, only the digits after the decimal are signiGicant

What is the pH of a solution with [H3O+(aq)] = 2.50 x10-‐3 mol/L? What is the pH of a solution with [H3O+(aq)] = 3.00 x10-‐8 mol/L?
What is the pH of a neutral solution? What is the pH of a solution made by dissolving 3.00 g of HBr(s) in 250 mL of water?
