Screencast-‐O-‐Matic: Your First Screencast 1) Start the Screencast-O-Matic Pro program (look for the SOM icon “Record” to open the recording toolbar. ). Click 2) On the SOM recording box, choose your settings: Choose to record only the screen, or only the webcam view of yourself (“head shot”), or both at the same time? You can selectively delete the webcam recordings later during the editing process. Max Time: Do you want to set a time limit on this recording? Size: What size frame (how much of your screen) do you want to record? Narration: Do you want to record your voice during the screencast? (You can add audio later if you prefer.) Preferences: set “hot keys” for things like Pause, or other settings. 3) Before you start recording, click “Preferences” and note what your hot keys are for “Pause” and for “Draw and Zoom.” Jot these down because you will need them in a few moments. 4) When ready, click the Record (red “Rec”) button. After a short countdown you will be recording. During the recording you will see these controls for Pause Recording, running timer for the recording, and the Draw and Zoom tool. [email protected], Center for Teaching and Learning, UVM, April 2015 5) Experiment by recording the following: • • • • Open a document in Word or other word processor and type a sentence. Click the “Draw and Zoom” icon (the pencil icon next to the recording timer). Double-click on one of the words in the sentence you just typed. Draw a circle around it or choose another Draw tool from the Draw and Zoom control box. • • • To quit using Draw and Zoom, hit the hot key combination. Save the documet file and close that program. Open Firefox and navigate to http://www.uvm.edu/ctl. Click on one of the links. Describe what you see. Open another program if you like or move some windows around. • 6) Press the “Pause” hot key. The SOM recording bar will reappear. Click Done to save your recording. 7) To edit your video, click on it. Move the play head to where the edit should start then click Tools and choose a tool. Each tool will guide you through the process. Here are a few to try. SOM Help videos for all these are available at http://som.screencasthost.com/channels/coeZrKjke • Cut a section from your video. • Add a Blur overlay. • Speed up a portion of the video where you typed a sentence in Word. • Use the Undo/Redo to step backward and forward through your edits. (You cannot go back and selectively remove an edit that you did several edits ago.) 8) Your video will be auto-saved as you edit it. When finished editing, click Done, then Save As a Video File. 9) Your recording will currently have a name like “Recording File #1.” Change that name to something more meaningful, then choose where it should be saved. Save it as an MP4 file. 10) Click Publish to complete the save process. While it is being saved you may click “Continue in Background” to go to resume other tasks while the Save is being completed.
