A cross section of this tube looks like many pillows have been piled on top of each other. This type is therefore called “pillow lava.” The “pillow lava” is made because of “Magmatic Dykes” . This is when magma forces the lava outside. The lava then cools and becomes hard, making the tube shape. The “Ishiki Pillow Lava” is the oldest part of the Izu Peninsula. It was created 20 million years ago. When looking closely at the cliffs you can see layers of rocks that have piled up. This is an example of “pillow lava.” In Ishiki area there are two places like this. Tropical ocean fossils were also found in the lava suggesting that there was an underwater volcano.
