Endpoint Management and Mobility Solutions from Symantec
Adapting traditional IT operations for new end-user environments
During the past few years the traditional concept of end-user computing has
drastically changed. Previous models of standardizing and simplifying no longer
support the growing number of devices, applications, and architectural models
available. As end users demand more choice and greater mobility, IT must learn
to accommodate a more open and flexible approach to end-user management.
Symantec’s endpoint management and mobility solutions allow IT to quickly
adapt their traditional methods to embrace current and future demands of the
business without breaking the bank. Our solutions focus on three areas:
• Centrally manage and secure a growing number of mobile devices
• Enable faster access to client resources through virtualization
• Extend traditional management to be inclusive of new platforms, such as OS X
Mobile devices are now an essential end-user technology
The impact mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have had on the way
we live our lives and the way we do business is nothing short of revolutionary. It
is quickly approaching parity with the impact of other significant technological
innovations, such as the personal computer and the Internet.
As an indication that mobility has truly gone business mainstream, a
recent Symantec survey on the state of mobility revealed that 59 percent of
organizations are now making line-of-business apps available to employees on
mobile devices and 71 percent are even considering the creation of a corporate
app store.1 Why is this transformation happening? The answer is because mobile
technology has proven itself as a legitimate source of business agility. Consider
that almost three-quarters of businesses surveyed expected to increase efficiency
through mobility, and the full 73 percent actually realized that gain.
According to Symantec’s State
of Mobility Survey, 59 percent
of organizations are now making
line-of-business apps available to
employees on mobile devices.1
However, despite the vast benefits of mobility, enterprise IT remains concerned,
and for good reason. Enterprises have suffered a variety of losses as a result
of mobility, measured by direct financial expenses, loss of data, and damage
to the brand or loss of customer trust. In fact, during the last 12 months,
the average cost of these losses to enterprises was $429K. Thus, the survey
also revealed that the risks surrounding mobility are the number one concern
of IT departments.

Adapting traditional IT operations for new end-user environments
To help enterprise IT departments meet the challenge of making employees ultra
productive with their mobile devices while also securing those devices, Symantec
has developed a strong enterprise mobility strategy that not only covers the
management aspects of the device, but one that secures both the data and access.
• Symantec Mobile Management: Provides visibility and control over mobile
devices with policy and profile management, application distribution, asset
reporting, and helpdesk capabilities.
• Symantec Data Loss Prevention for Mobile: Addresses data loss concerns
by monitoring device traffic and leveraging advanced algorithms to identify
and block sensitive data from leaving the enterprise.
• Symantec Mobile Security: Provides protection against malicious threats
and unauthorized access to sensitive corporate information by utilizing
award-winning antivirus technology, an advanced firewall, and Web
browser protection.
• Nukona App Center from Symantec: Provides complete corporate and
personal data separation with a multi-platform, multi-app container
solution that secures corporate data with policies around authentication,
encryption, and data sharing.
• Symantec O3 and Managed PKI: Offer secure access to a wide range of
cloud and Web applications and services from mobile devices with Single
Sign-On and strong authentication capabilities.
Enabling greater employee productivity
Today, employees are demanding the flexibility to choose how and where they
work and how they interact with one another. In the past, providing users with
a Windows device and with core applications was sufficient to meet those goals.
Now employees want to choose what works best for them, and that might be a
Mac® laptop or a specific application. This change is driving IT to adapt from a
standardized environment to one in which user preference and individuality is
front and center.
This revolution won’t happen overnight and odds are that no organization will be
completely physical or virtual or on a single platform. The challenge for desktop
operations is to slowly accommodate a variety of employee options, and grow the
necessary infrastructure and skills to effectively support them.
Symantec’s management solutions give you a comprehensive set of products
that let you adapt to these changes without adding new management tools or
processes. As new challenges appear, you can quickly adapt and deliver the
services needed to meet those challenges. Symantec empowers you to better
leverage and manage the vast array of critical new and evolving technologies, so
you can drive innovation and deliver new services that move the business forward.

Leveraging virtualization for faster delivery
As IT organizations implement broader end-user transformation initiatives,
application virtualization and streaming technologies are starting to play a
pivotal role. While these technologies have existed for over a decade, the
rollout of Windows 7 and virtual desktop initiatives are driving renewed interest
because their benefits exist in both physical and virtual environments.
According to Forrester Research, Inc.,
close to 50 percent of firms now issue
Mac personal computers.4
According to Gartner research, “virtualized applications can reduce the cost of
testing, packaging, and support of an application by 60 percent, and can reduce
overall PC TCO by up to 7 percent, as shown in our Assumptions and Scenarios
section.”2 Another recent report concluded that “although enabling faster
access to applications is often the perceived value proposition of application
streaming, the less-obvious benefits are likely more valuable, such as granular
license control, easier application updating, user-based application delivery,
and faster PC provisioning.”3
Virtualized applications act like normal applications, ensuring normal behavior and
full functionality; however, containing the application eliminates application conflicts,
testing requirements, and support. Application streaming enables on-demand
provisioning to reduce the need to pre-load OS images with applications, as only
needed applications may be delivered, saving on licenses and storage.

Symantec’s application virtualization and streaming technologies are not tied to
a specific platform. Historically, deployed to laptop and desktop environments,
Symantec solutions are increasingly deployed across virtual desktop infrastructures
and terminal servers for the same reasons. Symantec offers unified application
packaging and deployment across all Windows physical and virtual environments.
• Symantec Workspace Virtualization leverages a patented filter-driver
technology to selectively isolate the software, which results in greater
packaging success over other technologies.
• Symantec Workspace Streaming enables on-demand application provisioning,
offline cache, license recovery, and instant application upgrades.
Helping you drive innovation
With Symantec, you can have it all. Our solutions help you optimize your endpoint
and systems management operations to realize immediate savings and organizational
efficiencies by using a unified endpoint management and security portfolio across
your entire computing infrastructure and client devices, including smartphones,
tablets, laptops, and desktops.
According to Gartner, Inc., by 2016,
40 percent of organizations will use
PC application streaming, up from
fewer than 10 percent today.5
• Symantec solutions for a mobile workforce provide businesses with scalable
and secure solutions for managing device deployment and delivery of apps,
data, and content for smartphone and tablet users.
• Our seamless multiplatform support enables organizations to easily
support Mac and other platforms alongside their traditional Windows
devices without adding specialized management tools.
