In 1990, the triangular 15th century castle was transformed by
Swiss artist Gittfried Honegger into a centre for contemporary art
(espace de l'art concret). Honegger commissioned architect Marc
Barani, in 1998, to design a workshop-building where children are
invited to create art with artists. The architect studied carefully
the site and placed the introverted building in a way that only
the wooden roof-terrace can be seen from the old castle. The
roof becomes a public space in front of the castle. Underneath
and partly digged into the ground, the building opens itself with
big windows to a courtyard.

This is the first building of Swiss architects Gigon & Guyer in
France. The project is part of the 'espace de l'art concret'
(center for contemporary art), situated in an old triangular castle
surrounded by a park. The monolithic building is carefully placed
into the hilly landscape and partly hidden between trees. The
apple-green concrete cube contains an art gallery with 15
exhibition rooms of different sizes and heights. Big windows offer
nice views and bring the park into the building.

This holiday resort has 174 apartments, a pool and a parking
garage. Nouvel's analysis began with the site. It is rocky and
steep, almost a cliff, and partly cut into by an old quarry. The
appropriate architecture would therefore follow the profile of the
cliff, almost as an extension of it. 'A minimal, mineral
architecture' is how Nouvel describes it. The exterior façades are
finished in polished stone, matching in colour the natural
stonework of the cliff. In using a natural material with an
artificial surface, Nouvel both accepted the dictates of the site
and expressed the imposition of the new structure over the
original, another feature of the site that plays on the
natural/artificial ambiguity. This layered approach to the
contextual possibilities of the project is a key to Nouvel's
approach to architecture. By using stone and cutting and
polishing it like concrete, Nouvel both affirms the requisites of
the site and his own intervention into it (text from website

Le Cabanon de Le Corbusier

This small wooden cabin (16 m2), was the secret castle of
architect Le Corbusier. Designed on the corner of a table in
December 1951, it was to serve as a model for minimal living. The
small unit was put in place in 1952. It contained basic necessities
for short stays at the rim of the ocean. Vistiting the small cabin,
you will be amazed about the interior. From the outside it looks
like an ordinary shed, inside it shows the qualities of Le
Corbusier.

The museum which opened in 1964 is a superb modernist
light-filled example of the Catalan Architect Josep Lluis Sert's
work. (He also designed the Miró Foundation Museum in Barcelona
amongst others). Painters and sculptors of the day collaborated
closely in the realisation of this building by creating monumental
works integrated into the building and surrounding environment:
the Giacometti courtyard, the Miró labyrinth filled with
sculptures and ceramics, mural mosaics by Chagall and Tal-Coat,
a pool and stained glass window by Braque, a Bury fountain, etc.

How to get there
(Assuming most people will come from the Cote D'Azur/Nice
area) - Head to the town of Saint Paul de Vence. As you reach the
ton there is a sign for the fondation which directs you up a hill.
Follow this road and first GO PAST the signed carpark on the main
road (it's only an overflow carpark) and follow signs into the
Museum as there is a carpark right at the front gate.

Parking garage and urban space in front of the Forum Jacques
Prevert in Carros, allows a better management of the parked cars
which blocked the environment of this part of the city centre of
Carros. We wished to set up the architectural and urban elements
which give viability to this project of evacuation of the traffic,
especially positioning the parking lot as entity registered in the
landscape. The inscription in the landscape, by the material
used, allowed a putting in a safe place of people towards the
various flows, by a work on the limits and answers an appropriate
scale. To strengthen our will of soft and environment-friendly
insertion, the work on the material appeared to us as
fundamental. This wooden unique skin answers this will.The
project intends to join in the time by taking into account a
sustainable development which becomes an essential prerequisite
in any construction today.

The project takes into account the notions of flexibility, of
environmental awareness, of simplicity of use, of functionality,
of coherence that enable the programmatic entities to be linked
together around exterior spaces that are re-dimensioned and
re-planned. The scale of the place was found thanks to the
location of buildings with appropriated dimension. The care of
spaces is thought as for an urban entity, like a microcosm offering
a diversity of landscapes. The new buildings take place in the
heart of the gardens: gardens with plants for the boarding
school, but also “urban garden” and mineral one for the teaching
places. The ambition of this project is to offer a coherence set in
a specific environment.
