Syscon Star Employee (July 2008)
K V Vinod
Manager, Business Development
The saying goes that “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” and K V Vinod set
out to do just that when he helped our Company bag a prestigious deal from a multinational
alliance of car makers. Syscon Instruments won the order for seven testing machines this July,
following
six months of hard work, led by Vinod.
The orders are related to a Greenfield car plant near Chennai which was won against tough
competition from two major alliances of special machines manufacturers. Vinod, with the
support of Kasturi Rangan, K R Sanjaya, Mohan, Swaminathan, Shivanand and Raghu Prasad
worked day and night to prepare the techno-commercial offer.
The first challenge was to highlight Syscon Instruments' capabilities to the customer in the
light of tough competition. Determined to make Syscon's work noticed, Vinod was successful in
convincing the officials from Romania and Korea to visit our factory in March, despite their busy
schedule. This was a turning point; the team was impressed by our company's strengths and
engineering capabilities.
Contents List
Next challenge was to put together all technical and commercial
details and present them to the client. Getting the information from
the customer was not easy. Also, there were attempts by the
competitor to derail our bid. But Vinod made sure he was on top of
the things.
R K Sanjaya, GM Marketing says, “Establishing a good relationship with the client and
getting a clear picture of the scope of work was accomplished by Vinod without missing out
any detail.”
“He was quick in responding to their queries within minutes. Even late nights I would get
calls from Vinod for some technical clarifications,” recalls Shivanand Aithal, manager
Project Designs.
The hard work paid off and as a result the client was convinced of Syscon's capability.
In recognition of his exceptional commitment to work and professionalism in handling the
project from the start, K V Vinod has been selected as the Star Employee (July 2008).
But Vinod doesn't want to rest on his laurels yet, he is entrusted with ensuring the client is
satisfied with the manner the project is handled till its end. We wish him all the best.

INNOVATION @ SYSCON
New Concept in Pin Detection in Bearing Housing
India's leading manufacturer of turbo chargers, mechanical castings, tools and jigs fixtures, based
near Chennai needed to test its Bearing Housings, a key component that it manufactures. The main
requirement was to detect two pins inside the bearing housing and then perform the leak test.
In this regard, Syscon engineers worked on a concept by using laser sensors. The concept worked well
with all sample components provided by customer. However, during regular production it was
observed that variation in colour & position of the pin was very critical to sense and give satisfactory
result. The Laser sensors that were used to detect the pins were inadequate as the sensing area was
too deep.
The challenge was to look for a foolproof method of detecting pins. And in doing so the designers had to
come up with a cost effective solution without having to do too much modification as the machine was
already built. Assistant Design Engineer, Munikrishnappa suggested a solution comprising of a 2-axis
cylinder mechanism. The Syscon Design team quickly put this into action and developed a fool proof
mechanism that not only saved time but also cost with minimum additional machinery required.
The customer was extremely satisfied with the result and applauded the efforts of Syscon Engineers.
This innovative concept will now be adopted for other future machines with similar requirement of
detection.

NEW PRODUCT FROM SYSCON
Pin-Sized Hole Detector For Industrial Paper
A leading producer of high precision automotive paper filters has
an enormous task of identifying minute holes in the porous paper, that
occur during the manufacturing process of the filter papers. This
crucial task has to be performed before the paper is sent to be cut out
for making filters and only that section of paper, which is free of holes,
would be acceptable for making filters.
So far, the filter manufacturer depended on manual checking by a
tester who would scan several metres of paper rolls for pin-sized
holes. Some of these holes would be as small as 1mm. This manual
method was ineffective and time consuming as the tester would be
using only his naked eye for detection. Chances were that he would
get fatigued and miss out faulty sections of the paper. As a result the
company faced frequent rejection of the material by its principal
customer and therefore loss of revenue.
In answer to their desperate problem, a Design team headed by Raj Thomas, Sr. GM Production, with
members Tejas R Raj (software engineer), Prabul Kanth P M (software engineer), and Srinivasa S J (asst.
engineer, Systems) developed a novel Pin-sized Holes Detector unit, using LEDs and photodiodes.
The concept is simple wherein the paper to be checked is passed between the LEDs and photodiodes. Some
amount of light will pass through the “good” paper as it is porous in nature. This data is then compared with the
amount of light that passes if there is a hole in the paper or if the thickness of the paper is not uniform. The
difference of the data triggers an alarm, indicating a fault, thus enabling the testing operator to take appropriate
action.
Though the concept sounds simple, arriving at this solution was not easy. The designers had to overcome
unique complexities like multicolored papers, especially pink paper that allowed most of the light to pass
through. In addition, the ambient lighting conditions posed a challenge. The designers also had to take care of
the speed of the paper passing through, as the pin-size hole detector machine is an in-line testing unit. They
were also mindful of accommodating varying thickness and width of the paper.
It took the team four months to conceptualize and manufacture the complete working prototype, fulfilling the
customer's requirements. Currently the testing unit is under trials at the customer's premises. Once fully
operational, it will result in shorter productivity time, ensure good quality of paper, and benefit by good return on
investment for the customer.
This product has opened a gateway of opportunities from the paper manufacturing industry and we are proud
that our company has pioneered a technology answering some of the basic but critical issue of paper
manufacturing process.

COST CUTTING BREEDS INNOVATIONS
INDUSTRY ALERT
Weighed down by an economic downturn, a sharp rise in input costs like Steel prices and a slump in sales following a fuel price hike,
various industries like manufacturing and automotive, have gone in for aggressive cost saving measures resulting in innovative
solutions.
For instance, Maruti has introduced "one component, one gram" initiative that will reduce the weight of each Maruti car by 2.5 kgs
and result in a net savings of Rs 10 crore per supplier. Tata Motors has adopted a "total cost corporation" culture where engineers are
brainstorming on how to reduce costs. As a result, they were successful in reducing the manufacturing time for ACE, the company's
hugely successful mini-truck, by as much as 25%, thereby reducing costs.
Currently they are exploring the possibility of changing some of the components from steel to plastics without compromising on
safety and comfort.
Tata Motors is also close to changing the metallurgical composition of crank shafts, connecting rods and front axle beams used in its
trucks to the less expensive chrome steel or carbon steel, thereby saving around 10% of manufacturing costs.
Checking manpower costs is also on top of the agenda. But many of these companies say hiring freeze and pink slips are only a shortterm solution. In fact four years ago, when Tata Motors suffered a loss of Rs.500 crore, company's Chairman, Ratan Tata told his top
executives to give generous increments that year so that people don't leave thinking that it's a sinking ship. The training budget in Tata
Motors has in fact gone up more than twice in the last two years. While some others are recruiting more trainees to keep the overall cost
Several big Indian companies are also realising the power of small initiatives that can have a big impact. And these initiatives range from reducing air travel to switching
off ACs sharp at 6 p.m. to even withdrawing tissue papers in office canteens and toilets. Miserliness, it seems, is being redefined.
80/20 --THINKING HOW TO ACHIEVE MORE WITH LESS?
Pareto's Principle or 80-20 Rule is based on an observation that 20% of something
always are responsible for 80% of the results. Simply put, a few things are important;
most are not.
The 80/20 Principle is extremely versatile and can be profitably applied to any
industry and any organization, any function within an organization and any
individual job. It helps you identify all the forces beneath the surface, so that you can
give maximum power to the most productive forces and stop the negative influences.
80/20 Principle and You
80/20 Thinking, applied to your daily life, can help you change behavior and to
concentrate on the most important 20%.
You must constantly ask yourself: what is the 20% that is leading to 80%? Never
assume that you automatically know what the answer is, but take some time to think
creatively about it.
80/20 Principle and Your Business
The most important use of the 80/20 Principle is to isolate where you are really
making the profits and, just as important, where you are loosing money. Every
business person thinks they know this already, and nearly all are wrong. If they had
the right picture, their whole business would be transformed.
The game is to spot the few places where you are making great surpluses be that a
product, a market, a customer type, a technology, a distribution channel, a
department, a country, a type of transaction, an employee, or a team and to maximize
them; and to identify the places where you are loosing and get out.
Examples
* Project Managers know that 20% of the
work (the first 10% and the last 10%)
consume 80% of your time and resources.
* Resource Manager knows that 20% of the
stock takes up 80% of warehouse space and
that 80% of the stock comes from 20% of the
suppliers.
* Sales Manager knows that 80% of its sales
will come from 20% of the sales staff.
* HR Manager knows that 20% of the staff will cause 80% of your problems, but
another 20% of your staff will provide 80 percent of your production. It works both
ways.
How It Can Help You
The value of the Pareto Principle for a manager is that it reminds you to focus on the
20% that produce 80% of your results. Identify and focus on those things.
Pareto's Principle, the 80/20 Rule, should serve as a daily reminder to focus 80% of
your time and energy on the 20% of you work that is really important. Don't just "work
smart", work smart on the right things.
If you have any questions or if there is an issue you would like to be addressed, please

officers in system and procedures to increase productivity and quality.
INDUSTRY NEWS
Indian Manufacturing Industry Faces Slowdown
India's manufacturing industry is showing signs of a
slowdown as its growth rate is declining from 12.3% in AprilMarch 2006-07 to 3.9% in May 2008 (Central Statistical
Organisation).
The slowdown in the manufacturing growth rate is due to some
emergent issues and constraints, including rising cost of raw
materials, oil price hikes, appreciation of rupee, hardening of
interest rates and considerable time lags and inordinate delays
and bottlenecks in implementing projects.
There is a need for adopting appropriate raw material policies,
improving regulatory environment, helping capacity building of
small medium enterprises, skill development and improving
infrastructure for helping the industry to achieve lower cost,
improved quality and better performance and for higher
manufacturing growth.

HEALTH TIP
Drink Water to Stay Healthy
Drinking water is very important. It can help you recover from a cold more quickly, replenish
lost fluids after exercise, and assist in weight loss. Many people think they are hungry when
they are actually thirsty, so make sure to take a drink before diving for the candy machine.
Keep a four-cup bottle or thermos near your work station and replenish daily. Don't overdo
though - excess water can dilute important minerals and vitamins in your blood stream.

DON'T REST ON LAURELS
WORKPLACE STRATEGIES
One day a field marshal requested an audience with Napoleon,
and Napoleon knew what was coming. But as every good
leader must, Napoleon agreed to hear him out. The field
marshal brought news of a great victory he had achieved. He
talked for a long time about his accomplishment, piling detail
upon detail.
Napoleon listened closely throughtout the entire narration, but
said nothing. The officer was disappointed. He had hoped for a
more enthusiastic reception, as well as Napoleon's congratulations. Neither was
forthcoming.
Summing up, the marshal repeated much of what he had already stated. As the
officer rambled on, Napoleon continued to listen politely, and the marshal
interpreted this as encouragement. Surely, he thought, Napoleon will now give me
the praise I so richly deserve.
When the marshal finally stopped talking, Napoleon asked him one question:
"What did you do the next day?"
The field marshal was speechless. But the lesson was not lost on him. From then on,
the officer understood that he should never rest on his laurels. So he left it to others
to bestow the praise.
1MINUTE IDEAS
What is the key to transforming the workplace experience? It
is just to build and nurture "high-quality connections." In a
high-quality connection, people feel more open, competent,
and alive, and one of the best ways to foster these connections
is by encouraging respectful engagement between coworkers.
When co-workers engage each other respectfully, they create
a sense of social dignity that confirms self-worth and reaffirms competence.
Respectful engagement empowers and energizes, giving individuals a heightened
sense of their abilities.
There are five major strategies leaders can employ to foster respect, and thus
encourage quality connections, in the workplace: conveying presence, being
genuine, communicating affirmation, effective listening, and supportive
communication. Used in tandem, these tools, described further here, can help
eliminate the corrosive relationships that sap organizations of their creative zest.
Be the change: Practice being open to all the people you meet today, and see if it
contributes to building and nurturing high-quality connections.

SYSCON INSTRUMENTS EQUIPS WITH A POWERFUL TOOL
Every company intends to grow, equip itself with a powerful tool, namely "TRAINING". In a broader sense, it means the enhancement of knowledge. A study
conducted reveals that a 10% investment made in Training yields better result in productivity increase than an investment of 30% made in machinery and related
equipments.
With this finding, Syscon Board believed that arming the employees with knowledge in handling the hurdles in the areas of productivity and quality is the need
of the hour. As an action plan of this philosophy, Syscon Instruments started to implement training programme more vigorously since couple of years
Be it a management development programme such as Leadership, Time management, Team Dynamics etc or technical related subjects such as FMEA (Failure
mode and effects analysis), 80-20 Pareto principles, Syscon Board showed keenness in training. Recent experiment of training new Diploma recruits in Industrial
Electronics and PLC before assigning jobs, resulted in enhancing their practical knowledge, and enabling them to take up their job with ease.
"On job training" in the areas of effective meetings, schedules, system and procedure was done to enhance the productivity and quality. Frequent emphasize
was made on Customer Centric Culture. All through these training, employees were cautioned against “VIRUS MIND” as it creates negative effect on values and
efficiency.
I am very proud to be associated with Syscon in their endeavour towards employee's development. Support given by Directors in giving lectures on their rich
knowledge added color to the training projects. I am sure that with such forethought for employees' development, Syscon will have highly motivated employees who
will take the company to new peaks.

Sysconian since Aug 1993
You may not notice his presence but if you find the toilets clean
and drinking water coolers at the right spot then you know
Venkatesh is around. The responsibility of the cleanliness of
Syscon's premises lies on Venkatesh and Lakshminarayan, who
never tire of cleaning the office.
Not many know that Venkatesh is also a farmer who has worked in Ragi and paddy
fields. He now wishes his daughter to join Syscon someday.
Lakshminarayan, Housekeeping
Sysconian since Dec 2006
Energetic to do any kind of work, Lakshminarayan goes about
cleaning the office premises efficiently. He also lends a helping
hand to the packaging department from time to time.
Lakshminarayan is eager to learn English and Hindi to improve
communicating skills. He is a good batsman and scores fours and sixers often
during local cricket matches every other Sunday. He enjoys watching Chiranjeevi
movies.
FREEDOM QUOTES
My Idea of Freedom Is…
During the 'Independence Day' week, Sysconians were asked to express their views on what
their idea of FREEDOM is. Here are some of the 'inspiring' quotes of our colleagues.
“True independence and freedom only exists in doing what's right” Munikrishnappa
“Freedom is to have a smile on your face while working towards achieving success” Prasanna Kumari
“Freedom is to be able to express what is deep in your heart, without any inhibitions” Nagaraj M. L.
“Freedom is an illusion, there is nothing as freedom, even after death there is no freedom, as we all
believe in Life After Death.” Raj Thomas
“Freedom is to take decisions without any pressure from anybody” Dinesh H.V.
From The Editor's Desk
Dear Friends,
I am glad to note the response for the newsletter. As a result, this issue is an eight-page edition… so more to read and more to enjoy!
The innovation at our company never stops and the proof is on Page 2. Raj Thomas and his team have developed a new breakthrough product that has attracted attention from
other industries. Similarly the concept for detecting pins in a bearing house has been an eye-opener.
There are nuggets of such innovation waiting to be told and written about, so be open and share an innovation that you were part of or know about.
As you can see Syscon Newsletter has a new name Syscon Times, a suggestion from two of our colleagues, Anand Kumar M and Lakshmi Narayana.
To make Syscon Times a success it needs only one thing YOU. Your feedback is important to us to make this newsletter a hit. Do feel free to write in to us at
[email protected] OR approach the HRD directly. We welcome contributions of articles, cartoons, quotes, news etc from each of you.
The next newsletter will be released in first week of October, so send in your contributions/comments before 25th September.
Enjoy!
