The Odyssey final project Character Study (100 points) Due: Wednesday, May 18 This project is a character study worth 100 points in your project/test/essay category. A character study project showcases a specific trait about a character. Choose any character from The Odyssey that interacted with Odysseus at some point (obviously, you cannot choose Odysseus). It is important to choose a character that interacted in length with Odysseus so you have evidence from the text to use as support in your project. You can choose a human, a monster, or one of the spirits. Pick an emotion to portray through this character. This emotion must be shown in all three of your pieces for this project. This emotion should be clearly evident from the text. Narrative (25 points) 1. Write a one page (size 12, Times New Roman, double spaced, one inch margins) narrative that recounts your encounter with Odysseus. Tell it in your point of view as your chosen character. It should be done with a serious tone, and written in epic format , similar to The Odysse y. Use descriptive language and strong word choice to retell the events and to convey character and attitude. Create and underline at least one epic simile (3 lines min.) into the narrative. Include a short introduction (12 sentences) explaining your chosen emotion, and the scene you are retelling. The narrative needs to be typed and turned in to Google Classroom by the due date. Mask (25 points) 2. Construct a full facial mask portraying a single, dominant emotion or personality trait of your chosen character. This emotion or trait should be shown in the narrative you write. Cardboard or thick construction paper are the two most common methods of mask construction, but you can use any material. The main grading of your mask is to show effort and creativity . This will be turned in during class on the due date. Album/CD (50 points) 3. Create an album/CD cover not an actual disc. As we’ve learned so far, The Odyssey has wide spread inspiration on music and song lyrics in the world of media today. The album/CD should be on regular printer or construction paper. Do not make it actual “CD size.” The point of this album/CD is to show a theme that goes along with your chosen emotion or personality trait from the other two project pieces. Including the following: Front cover (piece of printer or construction paper) 1. A colorful front display with symbols/combination of scenes from The Odyssey . (Can be done by hand or computer images printed out). If printing pictures that are not copyright free, you must include a list of picture citations on a works cited page. Use easybib to create photo citations (not just the URL). 2. The name of the album/CD that relates to your chosen theme/emotion/personality trait. Page 2 (back side of front cover) 1. A typed list of 8 songs these are songs that really exist (you are not writing them) that show your chosen emotion or personality trait of your character. Include artist and song title. Do not include lyrics. Think about what kind of music your character would listen to in order to show the emotion you’re trying to display. Page 3 (a second piece of printer or construction paper) 1. Include a typed, thorough, wellwritten response describing how each song you chose relates to your character study. In this response, please include one quote from The Odyssey for each song that supports your inspiration for planning the theme/emotion of your CD, with a proper citation. Explain why you chose the quotes that you picked in each explanation. You may include lyrics from the songs to support your choices in your explanation.
