IB Diploma candidates open CAS Camp The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program students are holding their Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) Camp on January 24-26, 2013 at the ABS-CBN Eco-Village in Iba, Zambales. All IB students must complete a minimum of 150 CAS hours (50 creative, 50 action, 50 service) to receive the IB Diploma. The CAS requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside the classroom by providing its students a chance to be of service to the greater good of the community, promote health and physicality, and partake in activities that promote creative expression. Among the CAS projects lined-up for the IB 1 students are hands-on farmwork involving sustainable natural agriculture, poultry, vermiculture, dairy and mango farming. Other projects of a less strenuous nature involve arts and crafts activities. The participants will also get the chance to go kayaking and river wading in the Cabatuhan River, and conduct teach-ins and integration with the residents of the Loob Bunga Resettlement Community. The IB goal of educating the whole person and fostering a more compassionate citizenry comes alive in an immediate way in the CAS Camp. The students learn to reach beyond themselves and their books, and develop citizenship skills. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real consequences and then reflecting on these experiences afterwards. This process of doing and reflecting provides an excellent opportunity to extend what is learned in the classroom to a form of service. Achieving Academic and Values Excellence in a Digital World Parenting Corner Choosing extracurricular activities Extracurricular activities are fun and clearly a source of learning for children about themselves and what they can do in their world. Here are some tips to help parents and kids find a healthy balance among the many choices: Students & Parents’ Bulletin No. 26 AY 2012-2013 January 25, 2013 P. 1. Remember that they’re called extracurricular activities because they’re extra. Your child’s No. 1 priority must be schoolwork, so don’t hesitate to make continued participation in sports or clubs contingent on maintaining a minimum standard of academic performance. 2. Sit down with your child and review the desired activities at the start of each new term. Decide how much your child can reasonably handle, and make the wise choices. 3. Make sure you and your child are aware of exactly how much time must be committed to a chosen activity. Participation in a high school varsity sport, WWEP still open for admission The WWEP offerings include Ballet, in partnership with Acts Manila, Music, Theater Arts, Digital Technology (Animation and Video Editing), Research Paper Writing, Soccer, Basketball, Karate-Do, Arnis, Conversational Chinese, and Culinary Arts in partnership with Southville Foreign University. Enrolment is on-going until January 26, 2012. Will there be games on the weekends? How far will your child have to travel to away games? 4. Try to encourage your child to strike a balance between individual and group activities. Violin, chess and computer programming are great, but rather solitary. Perhaps your child’s interest in music could be developed by joining the school orchestra. 5. Be sure your child understands that joining a club or team means making a commitment to fellow members. Expect your child to fulfill that commitment. Barring exceptional circumstances, “it’s boring” will not excuse your child from sticking out the term in Scouts.(http://www.ehow.com/how_4323_chooseextracurricular-activities.html) 2 Students salute non-teaching personnel Theme of the Year: Achieving Academic and Values Excellence in a Digital World Campus: Luxembourg & Munich only Monday, January 28, 2013 Snack: Macaroni w/ Garlic Bread Lunch: Pork Schnitzel Chuck Roast Beef Chicken BBQ Fish Fillet in Mushroom Cream Beansprout Medley The hard work and dedication of SISC non-teaching personnel will be acknowledged and celebrated by students from preschool to high school on February 1, 2013 in Luxembourg, Munich and STAR campuses.
