July 2015, Issue 4 New Zealand TM National Earthquake Drill 9:15am, 15 October 2015 Be part of something big! At 9.15am on 15 October 2015 New Zealand will kick off a series of events that will take place in different countries all over the world. ShakeOut started as a public education campaign in Southern California in 2008. Aimed at educating the public about earthquake preparedness, scientists and emergency managers based the event on the scenario of a significant 7.8M earthquake event taking place along the San Andreas fault line in California, north of Los Angeles. Since 2008, ShakeOut has grown significantly in participation numbers and locations. New Zealand first took part in ShakeOut in 2009 with New Zealand’s Great West Coast ShakeOut. This was the first test of the ShakeOut concept in another region. Around 8,000 West Coast residents took part in the event and paved the way for New Zealand’s first nationwide event in 2012 where 1.3 million New Zealanders registered and took part. This year New Zealand will kick off a mass, coordinated ShakeOut event taking place across multiple North American states, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, Southern Italy, Colombia, Afghanistan, Cameroon, the Philippines and Japan, to name a few. New Zealand is aiming for the highest participation rate per capita with a goal of 1.5 million participants. Encourage your friends, family, workplace, schools and community groups to register and be part of the world’s biggest ShakeOut to date and get prepared to ‘Drop, Cover and Hold!’ Jeremy Corbett teaches us to ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ Jeremy Corbett, cheeky host of 7 Days is the latest wellknown kiwi to sign up to New Zealand ShakeOut 2015, our national earthquake drill. ShakeOut puts spotlight on service continuity & staff preparedness Toi Te Ora Public Health Service is using New Zealand ShakeOut as an opportunity to focus on both service continuity preparedness and the personal preparedness of its staff members. Its key role is to “plan and deliver services that promote, protect and improve population health, prevent ill health and minimise the risk of disease and injury through population based interventions,” says Annaka Davis, Health Protection Officer at Toi Te Ora Public Health Service. “The service places an emphasis in its work on improving the health of Maori, children (including maternal health), and young people. Toi Te Ora participated in New Zealand ShakeOut 2012 and received such positive feedback from those involved they decided to participate again this year. “We want to use the exercise to focus both on our service continuity preparedness and individual staff members’ preparedness,” says Annaka. In the build up to New Zealand ShakeOut, Toi Te Ora will be covering emergency preparedness themes with staff. Themes will include, spot the hazard, know the plan, keep in contact and know the drill. Toi Te Ora will also be highlighting New Zealand earthquake hazards and hazards specific to the Bay of Plenty. Health and safety staff representatives will be present at their three offices. Staff will complete the ‘drop, cover and hold’ drill and test simple aspects of the business emergency plan such as communications. To round up the event, a fun quiz will be conducted to make sure everyone knows the right actions to take before, during and after an earthquake. Toi Te Ora see ShakeOut as a way to raise awareness among staff of actions they can take before an emergency to minimize impact on themselves, their families and the service. The aim is to better prepare staff in case an emergency takes place while at work and highlight the role they play during an emergency and how they can accomplish it.
