Shabbat Shalom… L’shanah Tovah… Good Morning… May I
help you?...
How sweet it is to enter a synagogue, a sanctuary, or any
communal setting and hear words such as these. I am confident that you enjoy being
welcomed warmly to a BHC service, but have you thought about being among those
doing the welcoming? Please allow me to take a moment to explain the importance
of helping welcome both members and guests to BHC.
BHC’s Brotherhood coordinates our ushers. They do a wonderful job representing
and caring for BHC. Both women and men volunteer as ushers, as it has been for a
long time. We are so appreciative of Harvey Schevitz, Brotherhood’s Usher Chair.
Some of the reasons you should consider volunteering as an usher are:
•The warmth, community, and meaning of a service are not only
crafted from the bema. The tone and spirituality of our experience
are set by how we are welcomed and how the occasional question is
addressed. You can bring yourself to this important task.
• Starting with these upcoming 2015 High Holy Days, BHC ushers will
distribute and collect Machzors at each service. The new Machzor
(High Holy Day prayerbook) will be kept at BHC. You will be able
to purchase your own copy if you want. Therefore, we need more
assistance for smooth handling of the prayerbooks.
• You will find it personally rewarding. I am moved by the language
our ushers use regarding their volunteering in this capacity. Some
find meaning in helping others pray. Some find it easier to stand for
some services than to sit in their seats. Some Shabbat ushers find it
helps bring them to services on a regular basis.
Some of our ushers volunteer only for Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur
services. Others volunteer on Shabbat. Any time we pray, we not only need ushers,
we love to have ushers. The ushers’ primary goal is to set a warm and meaningful
tone for our worship. I will make it easy. If you are curious or want to volunteer,
contact me directly, [email protected] or 410-764-1587. I welcome your response.

A Message from the President: Martha Weiman
A Perfect Fit
The month of May is book-ended with our
Annual Meeting on Friday, May 1 and Shavuot
on Sunday, May 24. They go hand-in-hand.
Shavuot, as we interpret it today, speaks
directly to education and participation. Our Annual Meeting is
informational, participatory and celebratory as we acknowledge
the accomplishments of the year as well as installing new Board
members.
Like so many Jewish holidays, Shavuot began as an ancient
agricultural festival, during which Israelites brought offerings
to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah,
education and active participation in Jewish life.
We are given the responsibility of receiving the Torah, and
it is traditional, with some, to stay up all night and study. Then
there are the customary dairy foods including blintzes, kugels
and cheesecake with the prerequisite strong coffee necessary to
“pull an all nighter.”
As Shavuot suggests, engaging in Jewish life today gives us
many options. Attending the Annual Meeting and acknowledging
the leaders who work tirelessly for BHC is just one of many.
The devotion and thoughtful decisions of our Board members
impact our congregation’s ongoing success.
May 2015 is beautifully bracketed with very different events
that perfectly reflect who we are.
Pirke Avot tells us “the world rests on three things: on Torah,
on worship and on acts of lovingkindness.”

Service & Commitment Award Recipients
Join us as we celebrate with Paula Cohen
and Sharon Edlow, award co-recipients,
on Friday, May 1, at BHC. The evening
will begin at 5 pm with a reception
followed by the Annual Meeting and
Shabbat service.
Paula Cohen enjoys her time
volunteering at Baltimore Hebrew
Congregation. She is focused on
connecting with and helping others. It is befriending another
person and bringing a smile to their face that truly fulfills her.
Paula grew up in Rockville and received her first two college
degrees at Montgomery College. She came to Baltimore in the mid70’s to receive a degree in Physical Therapy. From there, she worked
for 30 years in geriatrics, orthopedics and out-patient settings.
Paula retired after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Paula met her husband, Stuart Cohen, in the mid-70’s and they
married in 1981. They have two daughters, Erica and Ashley, who
became B’not Mitzvah and were confirmed at BHC. Erica is now at
Wayne State University for her third Master’s Degree in speech/
language pathology. Ashley is at Zip Car’s home base in Boston,
working in global marketing.
Paula and Stuart have been members of BHC since the mid80’s and Paula promptly joined Sisterhood. She has had several
positions in the auxiliary, but her most prominent was chairing
the decorating of the sanctuary bema for Sukkot over the last
twenty-five years. Paula is currently the manager of BHC’s Judaica
Shop alongside congregant Ann Fishkin and a dedicated staff
of volunteers.
Outside of Sisterhood, Paula was involved in Parents’ Association,
inspired by her connection with her own children; she was
president from 2000-2002. Paula, with her husband, worked on the
committee for the Safam concert in 2014. She is a member of Kol
Rinnah, which she finds to be spiritually uplifting. Additionally,
Paula frequently attends Shabbat Shelanu services.
Being at BHC is always a heartwarming experience for Paula;
Paula feels like she is at her second home. She is proud to welcome
visitors and enjoys spending time with her close friends when in
the building. When asked to pick a favorite memory at BHC, Paula
could not choose just one specific moment, but rather pictures the
feeling of welcome and belonging she gets each time she enters
BHC’s doors. It is the enjoyment of the congregants and the lasting
friendships that Paula continues to come for. She finds herself
loyal to BHC, not because generations of her family were members
of BHC, but because of the warmth, continued learning and
wonderful, clergy she finds every day when she enters BHC.
Sharon Edlow was featured in our April Bulletin.

a fabulous evening of
CLASSIC
6
Baltimore Hebrew Congregation honors congregants and community leaders Ronnie
and Robert (Bob) Footlick, as Lily Tomlin and her classic characters performs for one
night in BHC’s Dalsheimer Theater.
On Thursday, May 7, 8 pm, expect lots of laughs thanks to the beloved actress,
comedian, writer and producer Lily Tomlin, who has been an award-winning storyteller
and innovator for five decades. She has starred in television, theater, film, animation
and recordings. Richard Pryor called her a “national treasure—I’d drop anything,
anywhere, to work with her.”
Tomlin joined “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in 1969 and rapidly rose to prominence
with her characterizations of Ernestine, the power-mad telephone operator, and the
philosophical six-year-old in the big rocking chair, Edith Ann. She has guest starred
on “The Carol Burnett Show,” “Homicide,” “X-Files,” “Will and Grace,” “Desperate
Housewives,” “NCIS,” “Eastbound and Down,” “Damages,” “Sesame Street,” and “the
Magic School Bus.” She played in “And the Band Played On,” “Murphy Brown,” and
“The West Wing.” Tomlin can be seen on the Showtime series “Web Therapy” as Lisa
Kudrow’s narcissistic mother, and will soon co-star with Jane Fonda in the new Netflix
series “Grace and Frankie.”
Films include her Oscar-nominated debut as Linnea in “Nashville.” She also
appeared in “9 to 5,” “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” “The Late Show,” “Beverly
Hillbillies,” “All of Me,” “The Kid,” “Big Business,” “Short Cuts,” “I Heart Huckabees,”
“Prairie Home Companion” and “Admission.”
She has received numerous honors, including a Kennedy Center Honor in 2014. Lily
Tomlin has touched a huge cross section of people with her work, delighting us with
her sophisticated wit and keen insight into human nature.
Night of the Stars 2015 celebrates the achievements of Ronnie and Bob Footlick, who
have each impacted the Baltimore community in their own right. Ronnie has been the
Director of Human Services at Bond Distributing Company in Baltimore for 45 years,
a third-generation, family-owned, full-service beverage distributor. Ronnie is a lifelong volunteer in the Baltimore Community and has served on the boards and/or held
officer positions for LifeBridge Health, Sinai Hospital and the Sinai Hospital Auxiliary,
The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, in addition to Associated
Women and the Business and Professional Division, Jewish Vocational Services, Jewish
Community Services and the PTA Council of Baltimore County. Ronnie is proud to have
been on the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Board of Electors, where she was chair of
the Gay-Lesbian Outreach Committee.
Robert (Bob) Footlick is President of Bond Distributing Company. He has served
on the Boards of the Maryland Beer Wholesalers, Distributor Council-Miller Brewing,
Sports Boosters of Maryland, Woodholme Country Club and the Sports Legends
Museum. He was awarded “Legends” status by the Miller Brewing Company for over 45
years of service to the Industry.
In addition to honoring the Footlicks, Night of the Stars raises money for BHC’s youth
community, benefitting the E.B. Hirsh Early Childhood Center and Youth Education.
Tickets are priced at $65 for Balcony (not handicap accessible), $95 for General
Seating and $200 for Premium Seating and are available for purchase at bhcong.org/
nots or by calling 410-764-1587. Premium tickets include a Cocktail and Light Supper

Bereavement Support Group
Shavuot Sunrise Service
BHC’s spring bereavement group, “When You’ve Lost A Loved
One,” will continue Sundays, May 3, 10 & 17. This is a chance
for congregants and family members to be supported by our
community. Robert Cohen, PhD, PA, will be the facilitator. This
program is for members only; there is no charge to attend. To
register call Carol J. Caplan, Chair, BHC Cares, 410-764-1587 ext. 270.
Shavuot’s roots connect to a harvest festival and to a celebration
of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. Later, the rabbis embraced
a feeling of excitement around the arrival of sunrise on a day
dedicated to that revelation. At BHC, our Shavuot morning “Sunrise”
service, Sunday, May 24, 8 am, is great way to celebrate the festival
through worship outside in the Fink Assembly courtyard, hear
the Ten Commandments chanted, and celebrate as a community.
Many attend to participate in the tradition of Yizkor, though our
Yizkor service is brief. Celebrate Shavuot and stay to enjoy a light
breakfast afterwards.
Mother’s Day Memorial Service
Join us for a Mother’s Day Memorial Service on Sunday, May 10,
10 am at BHC’s Berrymans Lane Cemetery, 318 Berrymans Lane,
Reisterstown. The service is open to all.
Baltimore Jewish Hall of Fame
The Baltimore Jewish Hall of Fame, created by the Jewish Community
Center of Greater Baltimore in 2008, honors exceptional Jewish
Baltimoreans who have made significant contributions to the
community through their life’s work in fields such as science,
medicine, business, community service, law, and the arts. On
Wednesday, May 20, 7 pm, at the Gordon Center for Performing
Arts, the 2015 Baltimore Jewish Hall of Fame will be inducted.
BHC honors our congregents:
• Irving Blum*
• Lyn P. Meyerhoff*
• Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr.
(* denotes deceased)
To attend this event, contact Esther H. Greenberg, Senior Vice
President, 410-559-3545 or [email protected].
U.S. Holocaust Museum Program
BHC will host the U.S. Holocaust Museum program on Thursday, May
21, 7 pm. Author and former Museum fellow Wendy Lower presents
“Some Were Wives, Some Were Mothers: Female Perpetrators
During the Holocaust.” Wendy will discuss her new book, “Hitler’s
Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields.” This compelling
work presents new evidence that challenges the traditional picture
of Germany’s women holding down the home front as loyal wives
and mothers during World War II to one in which German women
are placed directly in the Reich’s killing fields.
Shavuot Evening Study: “Doing and Hearing”
Join with Rabbis Busch and Sachs-Kohen and Director of Education,
Brad Cohen, for a special night-time study to celebrate Shavuot,
Saturday, May 23, 9 pm. Many Jews follow the tradition of staying
up all night on Erev Shavuot to be spiritually prepared to celebrate
the Giving of the Torah come morning. We only study for an
hour or two, but please join us whether or not you attended the
earlier Shavuot Confirmation Service. When offered the Torah,
our ancestors were understood to have said: “Na’aseh v’nishmah,
we will do and then we will hear.” The “hear” part means
understanding. This understanding of our tradition leaves us
pondering the inter-relationship between understanding and doing
in our world. Come share in our study of texts, ideas, and opinions.
As is traditional on Shavuot, cheesecake will be served.
Caregivers Support Group
At BHC Cares, we know that as a caregiver you face many issues that
often go unanswered. Because of this, we have formed a monthly
support group. We invite you to join this group regardless of whom
you care for—a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or a child—at home or
in a facility. This group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month
at 7 pm at BHC. This month’s meeting date is Tuesday, May 26 with
Tuesday, June 23 to follow. The group is led by congregant Benjy
Dubin, who has over six years of experience. INFO: 410-764-1587,
ext. 270.
BHC Rocks the JCC Community Block Party
The Baltimore JCC’s Community Block Party is back and BHC’s

Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC. Last year, thousands attended this
free event open to the public. Here are some features:

Outside/Inside by Marcia Wolfson Ray
May/June Exhibit
Reception: Sunday, May 3, 2-4 pm
Artist Statement: “You can’t
know the way” is a Taoist
saying that sums up my
feelings towards my own
work. The sense of mystery at
the center of life for me is
echoed in the forms, rhythms
and patterns represented in
nature. It is not only the beauty
that influences me but the
physical manifestation — the
geography of place, the season,
the temperature, the light. I
collect the materials myself
and the work I do outdoors
is central to what I produce.
I find my materials in fields,
marshes, by the side of the highway and in vacant city lots. The
point where I intersect with these materials serves as a catalyst for
my imagination.
After collecting the materials – bamboo, hibiscus, dog fennel,
corn, reeds, grasses, and various other plants – they may sit in
my studio for years, and it’s during this time that I can see what
happens to them. Some of the materials petrify and become
stronger while others disintegrate, turning to dust. This gives me a
hint of what I can build with them. The idea my imagination starts
with may not mesh with the physical reality of the material I’m
using, so I have to allow for a certain degree of improvisation that
lets the work evolve and dictate its own form. I try to minimally
impose myself so that in a way I am collaborating with nature.
This is where I return to the sense of mystery, because all my
conscious calculations may come to naught and all I am left with
is a process that reveals itself in a most obscure way. There lies the
excitement I feel when I’m working. It is my hope that the pieces
convey to the viewer an intensity that transcends words.

Thank You To Our Teachers
Reflections of Another Successful Year Come
and Gone
Who are the teachers who inspire our students?
We have a wide array of teachers with various
skills and creativity. Sally Rifkin has been
teaching for almost 48 years and has been with
BHC for over 10 years. She has been an amazing
teacher for us and for the last five years has taught Kindergarten.
Her commitment and dedication has been astounding and we will
honor her on Sunday, May 3, 11:45 am as she retires this year. One
of our new teachers this year is Julia Phoon, a sophomore at Johns
Hopkins University. Julia teaches T’filah for 3rd and 4th grades
as well as a Jewish Creative Writing class. She has deconstructed
prayers and inspired our students to engage in T’filah. Her Creative
Writing class has enabled her students to go in depth in the topics
she has chosen for them. These are two examples of the rich
diversity of our teaching staff.
They are all extraordinary, and we are lucky to have them!
To our teachers:
Every year you pour your heart and soul into guiding our
youth. We thank you for inspiring, teaching, sharing, learning
and growing with our students. Your dedication and commitment
is amazing, and we are blessed to have all of you as part of
our community.
May brings to a close another fantastic year for our Religious
School. I thank all of our wonderful teachers for providing hours of
meaningful experiences to the kids of this congregation.

GEDCO Cares Food Pantry Support
Deliver non-perishables to the BHC food collection bin located in
the Hoffberger Chapel Lobby. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Each year flies by. Where did it go? What did
we do? We are very busy each and every day…
learning skills, plugging cognitive information
into our brains, enjoying our friends, and making
‘stuff’ that our imaginations have created. The
list is endless. At this point my favorite reflections relate to how
much the children have grown over the past year.
What did she say?
How Do I look; do they fit?
We are creating masterpieces!
We dig, measure and discover.
Making snow angels is one of my favorite winter activities.
The Closing Ceremony for our four-year-old program is Friday,
June 5, 10 am. This is always an exciting day for staff and families.
Our children have spent several years with us and we have
established loving, secure and trusting relationships with them.
Our goodbyes are always bittersweet. We wish them well on their
educational journey!
We look forward to seeing you in our Summer Camp program!
If you have not yet registered, call or stop by for camp information.
Summer Camp runs from June 15 – August 7.
