ACCREDITATION TO BECOME A BETTER SLEEP SOLUTIONS CONSULTANT
BETTER SLEEP SOLUTIONS ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR
INDIVIDUALS
BSS Africa is situated in South Africa, a business unit of BSS Psychology Services from Australia who are world
leaders in the field of sleep improvement and fatigue management. It is a leading provider of sleep, fatigue and
healthy lifestyle programs to individuals and companies in Africa.
The lack of and poor quality of sleep is increasingly recognized as a major hazard in our lives, whether we are at
work, home or when doing things such as driving. The normal demands of a busy life are made worse by the
difficulty of managing quantity and quality of sleep.
Sleep is vital to good health and performance. Poor sleep and fatigue can lead to a loss of enjoyment of life and
can contribute to many serious medical problems such as diabetes and obesity. The main causes of fatigue are
insufficient or poor quality sleep.
Our Better Sleep Solutions program focus on people who experience sleep problems and feel the need to use
sleep medication. We do sleep assessments to help individuals review the quantity and quality of their sleep and
where necessary, work out what they can do to improve this. A good night’s sleep is one in which you get about
7 to 8 hours of deep and ‘dreaming’ sleep that you need to feel rested and alert the next day. To get to sleep
your brain relies on signals that tell it when it is time to sleep and when it is time to wake. Our program will help
individuals to use these signals to make it easier to sleep. We also help individuals to develop their own sleep
management plan.
Our goal is to empower Psychologist and Social Workers to combat sleeping disorders and poor quality of sleep
amongst individuals to manage their fatigue levels. We stand together in order to compete to the best of our
abilities in the sleep improvement industry that we find ourselves in. Essentially we are fatigue management

specialists but we offer more than that, we offer a treatment community where we can share our competencies
to help people to improve their sleep. Our purpose is to help individuals to improve their sleep routines,
environment and to solve sleeping disorders.
We hope to expand through our accreditation process to empower therapists to become Better Sleep Solution
Consultants.

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?
Stage 2: Education Session #2
The BSS program will benefit anyone suffering from
poor sleep caused by behavioural of psychological
issues. These include:
 Trouble getting to sleep
 Waking up during the night
 Waking up too early in the morning
 Waking up feeling tired.
This session covers:
 A review of your sleep diary.
 Detailed assessments of psychologically based
sleep problems.
 Advanced strategies to address insomnia.
These are optional sessions to provide additional
support required for any problems that arise.
This session is based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy
for Insomnia (CBT-I).
CBT-I is a scientifically based and proven strategy to
address severe insomnia.
BSS is a leading Australian and international provider
of sleep and fatigue training and consulting services.
Better Sleep Solutions is a short term, program to
resolve these problems.
PROGRAM OUTLINE
The program consists of 2 x 3 hour small group
sessions followed by an individual planning session.
These cover:
Stage 1: Education Session #1
This session covers:
 An introduction to sleep and its importance for
health.
 The importance of different types of sleep for
mental & physical recovery.
 Assessment of the causes of your poor sleep
(including screening for common sleep disorders.)
 Information on good sleeping habits.
 Where to seek assistance for medically based
sleeping problems.
 The use of a sleep diary to assess your sleep over
the following week.
Stage 4: Individual Sessions
This section includes ways to:
 Manage work so that it does not impact on the
time available for sleep.
 Ensure your bedroom is reserved for quiet rest
and relaxation.
 Prepare your body for sleep.
 Prevent the thinking that delays sleep.
 Develop good sleep habits.
 Improve your “sleep efficiency” (this is how
effectively you use the time in bed for sleep).
 Reduce your level of mental arousal to improve
getting to sleep.
 Reducing dependence on sleep medication.
 Dealing with a bad night of sleep.
Stage 3: Review and Planning
This is an individual session with your consultant to
plan a program to help you achieve your sleep goals.

YOUR PROGRAM LEADER
Your Better Sleep Solutions leader is an
experienced psychologist or health professional. He or
she has had extensive training and experiencing
assisting individuals with sleep and fatigue problems.
They also have access to BSS’s clinical team for
assistance with any issues affecting sleep such as
anxiety or depression.
