MATH MAD MINUTES • GRADES 6-8
Introduction
Mad minutes are worksheets with simple drill-and-practice basic math activities that
focus on a simple mathematical principle (e.g., complementary angles) or fact (e.g.,
multiplication, division). Students are given a short period of time (usually two or three
minutes) to complete as many problems as they can.
When completed on a regular basis, these timed worksheets will improve students speed
and accuracy with the basics; namely, the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide,
read, write, and represent numbers.
The enclosed Mad Minutes are targeted for Grades 6-8 and reinforce student
understanding of simple conversions between fractions, decimals, and percents.
Increasing student competency with conversions will strengthen student understanding
and confidence levels before delving into the more complex mathematical processes
embedded in each of the math clusters.
Directions for Fractions to Decimals to Percents
Mad Minutes
Each handout is intended to be used as a reusable template. The tables on each
worksheet contain a column for fractions, decimals, and percents. Students simply
complete the table by converting the given number in each row to an equivalent number
in the blank columns. For example, if the given number is a percentage (e.g., 50%),
students will convert the same number to both a decimal (e.g., 0.5) or a fraction (e.g.,
1/2) equivalent in the appropriate column of the table.
The last worksheet in this file contains a blank fraction/decimal/percent conversion
table. For students that need an additional challenge, teachers should add more complex
given numbers to the blank conversion worksheet. For students who need an additional
challenge, teachers should add more complex fractions, decimals, and percents to the
blank conversion worksheet to address their students' readiness levels.
Students are to work for 2 to 3 minutes on solving Mad Minutes. This is intended to
both strengthen students' application skills related to the math principles as well as their
mental math abilities.
