STUDY 3 TITUS 2,3 - Profile of the Godly and Ungodly (Part2) CONTEXT In the cities of Crete there were those either in the churches or closely associated with them who taught things contrary to sound doctrine. They professed to know God, but by their deeds / works they denied that they did. The same is true today. Some of these were of “the circumcision” who taught that to be righteous one had to keep the Law (of Moses) or had to keep a law they had come up with on their own. STUDY EMPHASIS • Contrast - Profile of the godly - Profile of the ungodly Their motive was sordid or shameful gain, and one result of their unsound teaching was that whole families were upset. Do you think this still take place today? The elders were to silence these false teachers because of the harm they were doing. Paul was in agreement with the statement made by one of the prophets among these ungodly men that Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons. Titus was to severely reprove (rebuke sharply) these so that they could be sound in the faith. That also needs to happen today when false teaching is presented to the church. Severe reproving from those who are able to refute with sound doctrine is needed currently. People are still being upset today by the false teaching they hear, and a lot of those people are in the churches. That is one of the reasons why the elders, overseers are to be able to teach. 33 | P a g e OBSERVATION CHAPTER 2 Verses 2-10 What do these verses say about the godly? How are they described and what are they to be doing? WHAT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT OF 2:1-15 If the older men and women of the church have characters as mentioned here and are doing what they should be, then how does that affect the young men and women of the church? What characteristic is repeated most in this chapter? To whom are the ‘good works’ directed in verses 2-10? 34 | P a g e OBSERVATION CHAPTER 2 Verses 9-10 How do these verses compare with 1 Timothy 6:1-2 and Ephesians 6:5-8? WHAT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT OF 2:2-10 The word “slaves” is doulos, the same Greek word used for “servant” in Titus 1:1. How do verses 9-10 relate to Titus 1:1? Who might the ungodly be in Titus 2? 35 | P a g e OBSERVATION CHAPTER 2 Verses 11-14 In study 5 we will delve a bit deeper into these verses. But for now, how do they relate to verses 2-10? WHAT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT OF 2:1 & 15? Verses 1 and 15 These two verses encapsulate verses 2-14. What does Paul instruct Titus to does these instructions relate to verses 2-14? 36 | P a g e OBSERVATION CHAPTER 3 Verses 1-2 What do these verses say about the godly? WHAT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT OF 3:1-2 & 8-11? In chapter 2 the ‘good works’ are mostly connected with the church body. To whom are the ‘good works’ directed in chapter 3? Verses 3:9-11 How are the ungodly described here? Cross references (1 Tim 1:3-7; 2 Tim 2:16-18; Jude 3-4; 2 Pet 2:1-3 Verse 8 We will delve deeper into verse 3-7 in Study 6. But for now, how does verse 8 connect with verses 1-7 and 9-11? 37 | P a g e MEANING Creation reflects the glory of God (Rom 1:19-20). Part of God’s glory is the Authority Structure in the God head, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This Structure is imprinted in creation. Where ever you look in creation you notice an authority structure. So also in society. God’s fingerprint is on creation. Therefore, in society, each and every one of us fluctuates between the various positions in an authority structure. We are always in a position over and under someone. The characteristics, therefore, of those in authority and those under authority speaks to each one of us. In Titus 2:1 Paul instructs Titus to teach what accords with sound doctrine, a doctrine which, according to 2:10, all under authority (meaning all of us) are to adorn. The word ‘adorn’ means to ‘wear’. “I adorn myself with fine clothing.” APPLICATION How can you as a LIFEGROUP encourage one another to adorn yourself with sound doctrine? What would it mean for us to adorn ourselves with sound doctrine? Identify what good works you as a LIFEGROUP can get involved in, in your immediate community? 38 | P a g e Use this page to write down some thoughts to the APPLICATION questions asked on the previous page. 39 | P a g e
