Check out where you’ll see our BRIGHT tent this month. Don’t forget to pick up your Fly & Ride raffle tickets and learn more about some of the sponsors that make it possible for all the money you raise to go directly to breast cancer research in Hamilton. Yup, it’ll be a busy month! But busy is fun in the business of BRIGHT! Register Now My BRIGHT Story Dawn Taylor I was 37 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My twin boys were four years old. Life was full and busy. And then cancer intruded. I was devastated. I was worried about my boys growing up without their mom. I started planning my own funeral in my head. The worst part was the waiting. Waiting for test results. Waiting to learn where to go next, which doctor to see, what was happening. It was so difficult. For some, it’s the elixir of life and for others the bane of their existence. But what to do about exercise during or after treatment for cancer? You might be asking yourself: How much exercise should I do? Should I exercise during treatment? How should I exercise now that treatment is over? I have never exercised before...where should I start? What are the benefits of exercise an cancer? Do I really need to do it? But if somehow that doesn't do it, her intense passion for the BRIGHT RUN surely will! "I love communicating with people,"said Chris. "I love giving hugs. I love hearing stories from survivors and their families when I’m selling raffle tickets. I just love people!" A registered nurse, Chris most recently worked in palliative/supportive care in Niagara for eight years. She has "retired" three times; only the third one, about two years ago, actually stuck. Read more about Chris We Have a Winner! Congratulations to Luke Bayer, who came out on top in the BRIGHT RUN Raise, Register and Win! Contest. Luke received his prize recently from BRIGHT RUN honorary team captain Laura Fortino. This is the first year that Luke, 21, a fourth-year biology student at McMaster University, has participated in the BRIGHT RUN. He’s a member of Juliet Daniel’s team, Pirates of the Cure-abbean. Here’sa link to just one of the many training programs out there: https://www.verywell.com/beginners-5k-walktraining-schedule-3435038 Team Fundraising Nights at Montana’s There’s a terrific opportunity for team fundraising offered by Montana’s through the restaurant chain’s Community Nights. It’s a fun night for your team members and a great way to raise awareness about the BRIGHT RUN and raise funds for your own team and the BRIGHT RUN in general. Here’s how it works: Teams that would like to host a community night will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis for available Monday nights in August. For more information or to book your Community Night, contact Julie Arsenault at [email protected] or Nancy McMillan at [email protected] Read more Top Tip: Make sure you publicly acknowledge businesses that have contributed to your fundraising efforts. For example, display signs with raffle items, noting the name of the businesses that donated the items and encouraging participants to patronize those businesses. Send thank you notes to donor businesses, on paper not by email because many businesses will post such letters in the office, store or restaurant. Thanking your donors properly will encourage them to contribute items to your next fundraising event. If you have handy tips for other team captains, let us know by emailing Nancy or Lee.
