Three Natural Ingredients That Protect Your Skin from Within
Cocoa
It’s the first rule of skincare:
wear sun block whenever
you go outside. Good advice,
considering that 80 percent of
skin aging is directly attributable
to overexposure to that great
golden orb. But here’s some
eyebrow-raising news — new
research shows that certain
natural ingredients, when
ingested, act like an internal
sunscreen to protect your
skin against the ravages of UV damage.
Carotenoids
Ever wonder what makes
carrots orange, tomatoes red, and
squash yellow? Carotenoids! This
family of antioxidant pigments
includes beta-carotene, lutein,
and lycopene. All of them have
been shown to create a protective
barrier against UV radiation
when consumed. Just munch on
lots of orange, yellow, and red
vegetables every day, or cover
your bases with a supplement
of mixed carotenoids. Make sure
the beta-carotene is the natural
variety though; synthetic betacarotene is inferior.
Cocoa is chock full of
antioxidants called flavanols.
These phyto-nutrients absorb
UV light, acting like a shield for
your skin. In fact, if you eat dark
chocolate regularly, you’ll be less
likely to burn when exposed to
the sun. That’s the conclusion of
a new human clinical trial, which
divided 24 women into two
groups: one that drank a highflavanol cocoa beverage every
day, and another that drank a
low-flavanol one. At the end of
12 weeks, the ladies in the highflavanol group had a 25 percent
reduction in sunburn when
exposed to UV radiation. Tip: the
darker the chocolate, the more
flavanols it has.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Question: Did you know that
the omega-3 fatty acids found in
fish can protect your skin from
the sun? Answer: Have you ever
seen a fish with sunburn?
It’s just one more reason to
take your omega-3s. Not only do
they protect your heart and your
brain from aging, they protect
your skin. In fact, one study found
that after taking fish oils for three
months, light-sensitive folks were
able to withstand almost twice
the amount of UVB radiation as
normal before burning.
So go ahead, eat your sun
block. Just remember — these
ingredients are meant to
enhance, not substitute for, your
topical sunscreen.
