PROBUS NEWSLETTER Volume 29, Number 10 PROBUS CLUB OF NORTH ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Editor: Jack Pickering 852 Morningside Drive, Fullerton, CA 92835 October 24, 2016 714-256-5827 The Next Meeting – November 3, 2016 The November 2016 meeting of the Probus Club of North Orange County will take place on Thursday, November 3, 2016. As usual the meeting will be held at Alta Vista Country Club, 777 Alta Vista Street in Placentia with lunch scheduled for noon. PLEASE REMEMBER to make a luncheon reservation by responding to your Evite invitation. If you do not use email, you may make a reservation by calling John Crowther at 714-680-0561. Your reservation response is required in order to provide head count information to the Alta Vista kitchen. Please respond by Sunday October 30th, and include spouses or other guests if applicable. November Program The Probus program on November 6th will feature Michael Gibbons, a motivational speaker who will share his worldwide mountain climbing adventures. In addition to his business interests in Brea, Gibbons is a successful mountaineer and experienced outdoorsman. He is one of approximately 125 individuals that have climbed to the top of the “eight” highest peaks on the seven continents. Mr. Gibbons’ experiences include a very adventurous ascent of Mount Everest in 2011. In addition to sharing details of that trip, he will combine the lessons of mountain climbing with success in business, team-building, risk-taking, and personal growth. Last Month’s Meeting Art Groscost As usual, President John Crowther got the October meeting started with a welcome greeting. Continuing, he mentioned that 22 bridge players were on hand for the morning bridge session and then introduced one guest – Art Groscost. Art is one of those Morningside guys and was invited by Bill Geiger. Art reported that he came from a western Pennsylvania steel mill town and had a 50 year working career. After the meeting ended, it was reported that Art had joined as a new member as well. So, welcome Art…….nice to include you as both a guest and a new member. Next, Crowther mentioned a few difficulties in distributing the newsletter and other items by e-mail, saying the club was working to overcome any problems and please be patient. If you are aware that you’re not receiving e-mail from Probus, please so inform the club and be alert for a chance to indicate any e-mail shortcomings when signing in at future meetings. In another announcement, Crowther reminded the membership of the Christmas season dinner and dance at the Fullerton Elk’s Club scheduled for Friday December 9th. The format will be similar to last year with arrangements being made by former Probus president Don Palmer. Cost and other details will follow. Bill Kincaid made a brief report on Marathon bridge which is nearing completion of its 8month cycle. Stay tuned for results and the chance to sign up (maybe in January) for a new 8-month round. President Crowther had two final items to throw out before moving on to lunch and our program. For one, he tried a joke about three sisters and then a few one-liners which were hard to identify as one-liners or jokes or something else. When a couple of them receiving limited response, he tried to attribute the source to Bruce Powell, but Bruce was not quick to take responsibility. Anyway, John moved on to our free lunch drawing and came up with winning tickets for Jim Sexton and George Wyckhouse. Congratulations to the winners. Jim Sexton George Wyckhouse Golf Report Golf chairman Dick Kaufman again provided details of the annual Probus Club Championship scheduled for October 31st at Los Serranos Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills. It will be played on the Los Serranos South course, forward tees, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Halloween attire consistent with golf course standards is encouraged but not required. [2] The tournament is the Dale Schumacher Memorial Tournament in honor of the Probus Club’s founding member. Format is individual medal play with full course handicap. The winner will be the golfer with the lowest net score based on his SCGA index as of October 15. Cash prizes will be awarded to the new champion and for other “bests” of the day. By the time this newsletter is received tournament foursomes will be established, but check with Dick for a last minute opening if you want to play and failed to sign up earlier. SCGA dues of $41.00 for 2017 are payable prior to the end of the year. Please make your check payable to Dick Kaufman and mail to him at 813 Morningside Dr., Fullerton, CA 92835, or deliver to him at the next meeting. In a final golf announcement, Kaufman named John Crowther as the most improved golfer for September with a new index of 19.7. Congratulations John, and we hope your jokes match the same level as your golf. John Crowther Dick Kaufman Last Month’s Program The Santa Ana Zoo was the subject of our October program and the zoo’s director Kent Yamaguchi did an excellent job of describing its history and its many features. Introduced by Mike Roesner while program coordinator Chuck Bishop tended to family business in Ireland, Yamaguchi’s 29-year knowledge of zoo operations including 7 years as zoo director was well received by the Probus audience. Mr. Yamaguchi grew up locally and graduated from Cal State Fullerton. In addition to zoo details, Yamaguchi included a few jokes and passed out zoo admission passes to a handful of Probus members who correctly answered his questions about the zoo. He disclosed that he sometimes brings along an animal or two when he addresses audiences but this time he left behind an armadillo and/or an owl. Apparently the lunch plates and the Alta Vista kitchen were too close at hand to allow animal visitors. The Santa Ana Zoo has existed since 1952 and results from a donation of land by Joseph Prentice. Mr. Prentice was a horse and mule trader and citrus rancher, and was particularly fond of monkeys. His donation stipulated that that the city must keep at least 50 monkeys at all times. Further stipulations according to Kent Yamaguchi were that the land be known as Prentice Park, remain as a city park, and include softball diamonds. Today, the zoo and Prentice Park appeal to youngsters and grandparents (the stroller crowd) because of its flat layout, its playground, merry-go-round, and its ride-along train [3] salvaged from Santa’s Village in the San Bernardino Mountains. The zoo operates on a $3.5 million annual budget with $2 million in revenue and the balance covered by ride fees and donations. New features at the zoo include a 65 foot Ferris wheel opening soon, a “Boo at the Zoo” Halloween event, and a planned river otter exhibit to include Amazon River otters. Yamaguchi explained that the otters are BIG, have armored jaws, and are active, noisy and smelly – not the same as little sea otters. The otter exhibit is a $2 million project. Santa Ana Zoo Director Kent Yamaguchi Bridge A group of 22 bridge players showed up for the regular Thursday morning October bridge game, and the winners were reported later by Ken Shimizu as follows: Martin 1st North-South) Jim Murray – Don Lewallen tie ) Bill Kincaid – Jack Pickering 3rd North-South John Pinson – Angela Friedman 1st East-West 2nd East-West 3rd East-West John Nichols – Chuck Malmstrom Mas Stevens – Ken Shimizu Jim Martin – Brad Woodhull Dues for 2017 Membership chairman Mike Roesner has announced that he is beginning to collect annual dues for 2017. The amount remains at $20.00. Please make your check payable to Probus and mail to him at 2521 Crown Way, Fullerton, CA 92833, or bring your payment to the next meeting. From Probus Newsletter Archives…….December 1987 Walt Penner reiterated his announcement about the January dineout at the officer’s club at the U.S. naval Station in Long Beach. There will be dining and dancing all afternoon and evening. He requested that checks covering $22.88 per couple be made out to him personally and mailed to him in plenty of time. He needs to give your names to the gate guard and has to charge the total cost to his account there. Please save the enclosed map to make sure that you know how to get there. Lost people forfeit their cash. [4] Remember…… Please remember to make your reservation for the November 3rd meeting.
