Place this pocket on the outside fabric main bag pattern piece so the bottom raw edge of the pocket lines up with the middle of the main bag piece. Fold up the raw edge and stitch the two sides and bottom as shown below: 7. Using a chalk pencil that will show up on your fabric (but not remain there permanently) draw a series of lines along the writing utensil pocket piece spaced 1” wide apart and stitch along the lines as shown in the diagram. 8. Place 2 of the notebook/paper pocket pieces together right sides facing and sew one of the long sides together using ½” seam allowance. Do the same with the 2 remaining notebook/paper pocket pieces. 9. Turn right side out, press and topstitch along the edge you stitched in the previous step. Do this with both of the notebook/paper pocket pieces. 10. Place the notebook/paper pockets on the lining fabric main bag pattern piece so the bottom raw edges are touching in the middle of the main bag lining piece. Secure with straight pins. 11. Fold up the raw edges at the middle and stitch the two sides and bottoms of both of the pockets as shown below: 12. Now take the strap pieces and fold them lengthwise with right sides together. Secure with straight pins. 13. Stitch with ½” seam allowance along the long open edge. 14. Using a safety pin, turn each strap right side out and press with iron. 15. Secure the straps to the outside main pattern piece using straight pins in the following manner: 16. Place the main pattern lining piece on top of the main pattern outside piece (that now has straps attached to it) with right sides facing eachother and secure with straight pins. Stitch the two long sides and the bottom. Stitch the top partially leaving the middle open. 17. Turn the bag right side out and stitch the remaining open portion closed with a topstitch on the sewing machine or you can stitch it closed by hand. 18. Press the bag with the iron and you are finished.
