Annual
2010
Report
Dear Friends,
For 27 years, the mission of Friends In Deed has been to respond to unmet emergency needs and
act as a bridge between congregations and people with needs in Washtenaw County. In the
past few years, as the depressed economy in Michigan resulted in more people in need and fewer
resources to help, responding to this challenge has helped define the focus of our work. We have
tried to identify those needs that FID is uniquely positioned to address and identify resources to
meet those needs. We have also joined hands with other agencies and congregations in response
to the newly unemployed and recently homeless. Specific unmet needs that Friends In Deed met
with newly acquired resources and/or enhanced efforts include: emergency prescriptions and dental work, utility shut-offs, car repair for employment purposes, and increased furniture assistance.
In addition, we continued to provide the most current resources to our clients and congregational
network.
During these difficult times, Friends In Deed has been truly blessed and thankful for the many
congregations, individuals, organizations and business partners, whose generosity has enabled us
to maintain services, purchase a building, and expand our Furniture Program. This faithful support is what allows Friends In Deed to help those in need in our community.
With appreciation,
Helena Prince

Programs and Services
Congregational Services
Information, referral and screening services are provided to congregations seeking to help those in need.
A “How to Help Seminar” provides guidelines on how
to assist; a Resource Guide to Community Services is
mailed twice yearly to over 200 congregations; an email
network provides resource information and client alerts.
Direct Assistance Program
Information, referral and financial help are provided
for unmet basic needs that are critical to a person’s
health and well-being. In 2010, FID assisted 1,763
families through the Help Line with information,
referral and over $40,000 in direct asistance.
Friends In Deed
is pleased to partner with Father
Phillip Mayfield
of Holy Trinty
Student Parish in
Ypsilanti.
Mission Statement
Friends In Deed is an interfaith volunteer organization that provides for needs of Washtenaw
County residents that are not being met by
other human service agencies. Friends In Deed
provides information, referral, and screening
services to congregations and agencies as well
as resources to people in need.
Volunteer Laurie Sternberg takes a quick
break from answering calls on the Help Line
for the camera.
2010 Highlights
Increased funding for medical and dental needs was provided by grant funds
from the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop and
Knox Presbyterian Church. FID was
able to assist more clients who needed
prescriptions filled or emergency dental care, due to a reduction in services
and funding from other resources.
Furniture Coordinator, Lora Elwart’s
hours of work were expanded to address greater program demands. This
increase was possible through grants
from the Sterken Family Foundation
and the Speckherd-Knight Charitable
Foundation.
FID welcomed Stormy Lloyd as
Program Manager; and said thank you
to previous Program Manager Kirstin
Bohac after nine years of dedicated
service to the organization.

FID appreciates the generosity of the community
in donating gently used furniture and appliances.
Furniture Program
Donated good condition furniture/
appliances are provided to lowincome households. Items are picked
up by clients from donors’ homes or
the warehouse or are delivered by
volunteers. During the winter holiday
season, FID collects funds for the
Annual Holiday Bed Drive to
purchase new mattresses and box
springs. In 2010, nearly 400 pick ups
and deliveries by FID volunteers
occurred. Over 2,784 pieces of furniture and appliances were disbursed.
The donation of good condition vehicles helps others in need remain stable and sustain employment.
Volunteer Andrew Nash, repairs an appliance
for a FID client.
Volunteer Services
Appliance repair, transportation to
critical appointments, chore services
and minor household repairs are
provided on an emergency basis as
volunteers are available.
Transportation/Car
Repair Program
Minor car repairs, other transportation related needs and the occasional donation of a vehicle are provided for those requiring transportation
to maintain employment or for
medical reasons. Donated cars are
assessed by a certified mechanic.
FID assisted 120 clients with car
related requests in 2010.

The Second Annual Golf Outing was a success. Additional
sponsors supported the effort and
revenue increased to $10,000.
The Thomas L. Thomas Foundation, a donor advised fund
through the National Christian
Foundation, visited the FID facility and subsequently announced
an increase in their annual giving
from $5,000 to $10,000 for the
continuation of FID work.
Members of the FID Board of Directors stepped forward with donations and pledges at year-end to
complete the Capital Campaign,
enabling us to retire the mortgage in early 2011. The building
continues to be a real asset to the
mission of Friends In Deed.
