Stubborn Donkeys, Missed Baskets, and Big Smiles By: Amber Ellison At the Armory on January 8, the LHS Student Council held an event that featured games of donkey basketball. Players were required to be on their donkeys in order to pass or shoot the ball, and fouls were not watched. Some donkeys were more well-mannered than others. Student council president, Brandon Heil thought the event was a success. He also wanted to thank “The clean-up crew, consisting of Britt Oli- ver, Peyton Anderson, and Jordan Maier, who were responsible for disposing of the donkeys’ accidents.” The event was well attended by the community and smiles and laughter were abundant during the games. This concert involved songs in which the high school and junior high choir joined together, as well as collaborations with the junior high and high school band. Parker Minh accompanied the choirs on the drum set when they performed “Yuletide Rhythms.” For senior musicians Krista Miller, Kelly Schopp, Kaitlyn Reimer, Raechael Seidel, Amanda Riley, and Collin Hess, this was their last winter concert. Riley commented, “’Fum, Fum, Fum’ was a little harder of a piece for the band, but it went well and was fun.” The piece was also Dillon Reede’s favorite, as he had a solo in it. On ‘A La Nanita Nana,’ Miller admitted, “It was my favorite song, even though having a solo part is always a little nerve-racking.” Right- Lemmon’s music teacher, Tracy Minh, conducts the Jazz Band as they play ‘Who Let the Elves Out?’ and ‘Jazzification.’ Above- The high school and junior high choirs collaborate to perform ‘Yuletide Rhythms,’ a fun piece incorporated with different rhythmical voice patterns. Two Seniors Travel to Denver By: Taylee Raba Two seniors, Kelly Schopp and Raechael Seidel, along with FFA advisor, Etta Knuth traveled to Denver, Colorado in mid January. Every year the seniors in FFA get the chance to go to Denver for the Stock Show. They left on Saturday and stayed in Philip, SD. Then the next morning they got on the bus with three other schools and were on their way to Denver. A few of the activities they got to experience while in Denver were going to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Bass Pro, Invesco Field which is home to the Denver Broncos, the Denver Zoo, the National Western Stock Show, and the PRCA Rodeo. Schopp commented that the stock show and getting to meet Miss Rodeo America were her favorite parts of this trip. Each group was given a different biome to represent such as the desert, rainforest, taiga and tundra. Mr. Swanson also required each student to write a one page paper explaining their biome and what types of plants and animals live in that biome. Each group also had to present to the class and write five questions about their assigned biome for the final test. Mr. Swanson’s astronomy class conducts a lab to replicate how craters are made. Senior, Shelby dropped several objects onto her “moon’s” surface including marbles and a golf ball which reportedly made a large crater and a BIG mess. The students used plaster to represent the moon surfaces. Jasmine, junior physics student, figures the resultant on one of the problems assigned in a lab on vectors and resultants in the high school gym. “It’s easier for me to learn when I’m doing hands on projects,” commented Jasmine. Mr. Swanson gave the students the vectors and distances and they had to find the resultants. Some problems were quite in depth and involved multiple vectors. One Actor Receives Outstanding Actor Award Performing the serious play, “Her Senior Year” by Cody Moree, the One Act Play cast and crew under the direction of Jenny Dirk competed in the Region One Act Play Competition in Mobridge on January 18. Even though Lemmon was not chosen as one of the top two plays from the region to advance to the State One Act Festival, Mrs. Dirk said they gave a heartfelt performance and acted very professionally. Parker Minh received and Outstanding Actor award for his performance as Kyle, the boyfriend of the main character who died of cancer in the play. Several students were nominated for outstanding actor awards, but Minh was the only one to get the 2/3 vote from the judges. Sage Peterson commented that her favorite experience while in one act is “being able to watch the other plays.” Mrs. Dirk added that “The students and I all learn so much by watching the other plays and listening to the judges’ critiques. A public performance of “Her Senior Year” was held on January 23 at the high school gym. Admission was charged and donations were accepted with all proceeds going to help fund the Missoula Children’s Theatre which will be in Lemmon the week of March 27-April 1. MCT will audition and cast local children grades K-12 and rehearse that week to put on two full length musical productions of Peter and Wendy. Despite their rough start, the Cowboys have made their way to the number one seed in District 15B. The three game losing streak came to an end when the Cowboys won against Newell’s Irrigators, which was a very physical game. Two big wins for the Cowboys were against McLaughlin and Faith. The Mustangs, travelled to Lemmon to play a nail-biting game against the Cowboys, who came out with a 51-47 win. Senior, Cameron Casey shared, “It was a good game. We played hard and played as a team.” Will VanLishout and Jace Kocer led the Cowboys in scoring with 18 and 12. Last year the Cowboys beat Faith for the first time in eight years. This year the Cowboys did it again, winning on the Longhorn’s home court 64-53. Kocer’s four threepointers helped him lead the Cowboys in scoring with 22 points. As a team, the Cowboys shot an impressive 83 percent from the free-throw line. “We really picked up defensively and converted on their turnovers,” added Head Coach, Sheri Anderson. The Cowboys will go into the Little Moreau Conference Tournament as the number two seed the first weekend of February. For five Cowboys this will be their final Little Moreau Tournament. Other placers for the Cowboys were Huffman at 2nd, Bucks at 4th, G. Schopp at 8th, C. Schopp at 7th, and Ellison at 3rd. After Stanley County, the Cowboys traveled to Baker Montana for a tri, and then to Faulkton. The Cowboys kept working through Christmas vacation, and on December 29 & 30 the team got to attend the Rumble on the Red tournament, held at the Fargo Dome. While it was tough competition, Coach Peterson stated in practice later that week that the tournament served as a great learning experience and allowed the wrestlers to experience competition from both South Dakota and North Dakota along with Minnesota, as well. As the regular season is coming to a Dylan goes for the pin and a 2nd place close, with only two more regular season finish at the Hettinger Tournament. tournaments, the Cowboy team is expecting big things for the post season. There is a total of eight boys on the team this year consisting of two sixth graders, four seventh graders, and four eighth graders. Their focus this season is on fundamentals. They’ve been working on improving their ball handling skills, passing accuracy, consistency shooting the ball, setting good screens, and making good cuts to get open. Sheri Anderson commented, “Their ball handling has improved and they have a better understanding of the game.” The Cowboys won their season opener against the Hettinger/Scranton NightHawks outscoring them 46-17. The boys lost to the Bowman County Bulldogs in their second game 24-50. Anderson commented on a memorable moment from that game stating, “The two sixth graders, Andrew (Dirk) and Jared (Riesinger) both scored their first points as free-throws that game.” The boys also pulled off two more wins against Dupree, 47-28 and Faith 44-20. The Junior High LMC Tournament was postponed but Anderson commented, “The boys have a good chance of doing very well in the tournament.” Above- At the high-post, Talon, looks to dish the ball to a low-post teammate.
