Letter From the President Pam Fuller AAF TMFA, TSFA President S pring has sprung! This is my favorite time of year. All the bulbs are bursting with color. It is a time of rebirth and fresh starts. Easter is April 20th and Administrative Assistant’s Day is April 23rd. I am sure all of you have your Easter Lilies ordered. Do you know the story of the Easter lily? “When Jesus walked the earth, the lilies were proud flowers and wouldn’t bow their head to him, but after Jesus died, they were so ashamed of themselves for being too proud that they’ve bowed their head ever since”. The Easter lily, often called the white-robed apostle of hope, is mentioned many times throughout the Bible. Tradition has it that this white flower sprung up where drops of Christ’s sweat fell to the ground in his final hours. The lily also represents tranquility. P.O. Jack Weatherford Past TSFA Presidents “Memories” TSFA President 2009-2010 Written by: Bridget Weatherford Memories Part II… We hope you enjoyed the 1st edition of “Memories”. If you missed it, make sure to check it out in the March Bloomin’ Texan magazine as John Priest shared many special, funny and heartwarming stories of his time spent as TSFA President and the years spent as a leading contributor to this organization. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy our second edition of ‘Memories’ and make sure to keep watching for more presidential stories in future Bloomin’ Texan magazines. O 2007 TSFA Hall of Fame (Weatherford Farms, Inc.) ne very special memory I have concerns a beautiful lady I call my “convention wife”. For years, TSFA would hold the Presidents Ball during convention. To be honest, I never attended until she called and asked me to be her escort. Knowing her, I knew it would be fun and it was. Well, that evening started a tradition and I was her escort for every ball until TSFA stopped doing them. That first night I told her how beautiful she looked “all dressed up” and, even today when we meet, she’ll give me a big hug and I’ll say, “How are you doing beautiful?” She never gets tired of hearing it and I never get tired of saying it. The woman I’m talking about is Judy Rutledge. She is a very special woman and she will always be my “beautiful convention wife.” O Jimmy Klepac TSFA President 2005-2006 2006 Texas Floral Endowment Hall of Fame 2010 TSFA Hall of Fame Award (Klepac Greenhouses, Inc.) ne of my favorite memories of being President of TSFA was at our Annual Convention in San Antonio. Being President, my entire family came with me to the Convention to enjoy a little family getaway and experience the TSFA Convention as a family. During that Convention, our Executive Director, Dianna Nordman, was in a cast and used a golf cart to help her navigate through the expansive San Antonio Convention Center. When my family first arrived at the Convention Center, Dianna happened to be zooming by on her golf cart. She offered to give my kids a ride: they thought they were celebrities! And to this day, they still call her “Miss Dianna”. When I get home from Convention, they always ask, “Did Miss Dianna have a golf cart?” Another favorite memory was my first Convention as President of Klepac Greenhouses. My Dad had recently and unexpectedly passed away and since we had already registered for Convention, I decided to go anyways and set up and work our booth. I was nervous about going, and also sad that my Dad would not be there with me. I had barely arrived at the Exhibit Hall, and a friendly competitor, Jean Irwin from Irwin Greenhouses, came and welcomed me, gave me an orientation, and made me feel at home with new friends. Also at my first Convention, I was only registered as an exhibitor at the Trade Fair. I wasn’t registered for any classes, parties, and especially not for the Saturday night Gala. Here is the conversation that ensued between friend/customer and myself: Jack Cross, “Jimmy, are you going to the Gala tonight?” Me: “I did not register so I do not have a ticket.” Jack Cross: “Don’t worry about it; I will get you a ticket.” Me: “I have nothing to wear to The Ball.” Jack Cross: “We are about the same size. I’ve rented a tux, you can wear my suit!” I was out of excuses, so I went and sat with his family. Once again, welcomed, and made to feel at home with new friends. LaVon Bankhead AAF AIFD PFCI TMFA (Courtesy of Keith Taylor & Dianna Nordman) TSFA President 1985-1986 2005 TSFA Achievement Award W hile at the 1987 Convention held in Austin, Leonard Tharp was giving a presentation when he became ill and passed out on the stage. As equipped and ready as ever, LaVon just stepped right up on stage, grabbed a boa, wrapped it around her neck, took the microphone and just continued the presentation without missing a beat. You would have thought that she had practiced it all ahead of time. Once Leonard felt better, he was able to pickup from where LaVon was and finish his program. The Bloomin’ Texan c April 2014 / 4 Ken Freytag TSFA President 1986-1987 TSFA Convention Chair 1988, 1998, 2002 1988 TSFA Achievement Award Recipient 1999 TSFA Hall of Fame with Past Presidents 2006 Texas Floral Endowment Hall of Fame I Pat Shirley-Becker AIFD TMFA TSFA President 2008-2009 2010 TSFA Convention Chair 2010 TSFA Achievement Award Recipient 2010 Texas Floral Endowment Hall of Fame A lmost 20 years ago, I presented a floral design program with the help of two of the most enjoyable women I came to know as dear friends. Tubby Adkisson and Ann Hobbs were wearing hats for the Texas Floral Endowment and our program was presented in Waco for the Family and Consumer Science Convention. This was my first stage program and I was not real sure what I was going to do, but I said, “Yes… I will do it”, not having any idea what I was going to do! And as the date got closer, I thought I must have been out of my mind to say yes! The topic was “Floral Designs Which Could be Used in a Home Setting”. Okay, this wouldn’t be too hard; this is what I do each day, as a florist! Well, that day arrived! The designs were completed, the van was loaded and I headed nervously toward Waco to meet Tubby and Ann and take that first step toward one of my long term goals. Well, that was the beginning. We managed to get the arrangements unloaded, moved the product to the stage, presented the program, tore down the stage and re-loaded the van. I don’t recall what I said or did during the entire program. Although, each time I looked toward Tubby and Ann… their hands were together in the air and I knew we were doing ok! Whew, that process was an education… the all-encompassing work involved in presenting a program was more than I had ever imagined! It was a group effort and thank God they were there to help! We had so much fun and what I learned from those ladies will always be dear to me. They were “the TSFA ladies” and they had made an impression on me! Loving what they did and sharing what they knew, that is what TSFA is all about! was 19 years old when I opened my shop in 1974. Tommy Dismuke was managing Bill Doran Wholesale and convinced me to join TSFA in 1978. I got involved and I feel that the friendships and mentoring from so many is why we are still growing as a company 40 years later. I met Mike Roach from the Connection in Ft. Worth, when we were both on the TSFA board in the 80’s. We would brainstorm over a few beers after meetings and decided to open a business. Thomas Gay, Mike and I opened Austin Flower Co. over 16 years ago and with managing partner, Tommy Dismuke, opened San Antonio Flower Co. over 10 years ago. Mike died a few years ago, but he will always be remembered as a dear friend. Without TSFA, these friendships and great businesses would have not developed. I owe much of my success in the floral industry to TSFA. I considered Lee McShan and Felix Ankele not only friends but professional mentors. Despite the age difference, they always shared their secrets to success. I was in my 20’s when we met through TSFA and they encouraged me to run for the board and, in 1987, serve as president. Jay and Tubby Adkisson were great florists, dear friends and tremendous supporters of TSFA. I was fortunate to serve on Mike McShan’s board when he was president of TSFA. Mike was very intelligent and would have had a great impact on TSFA and the floral industry. Mike was in Austin for a board meeting when he had a heart attack. His father called me at 7am that morning to see if I knew a good heart doctor. Bonnie and Mike were on the way to Seton hospital. My next door neighbor was a cardiologist and met them and cared for Mike until he went home to Dallas. Mike was home recuperating when he died unexpectedly. Lyndon Holt was great fun and loved a party. I was blessed to call him a close friend and he left earth way too early. Sheri White AAF TMFA TSFA President 1994-1996 1991 TSFA Convention Chair 1999 TSFA Hall of Fame with Past Presidents Recipient 2003 TSFA Achievement Award W hile President at the Dallas Convention in 1995, I hired a limo to pick my husband, Donnie, and my sons, Bryan and Christopher, up from the airport. During the limo ride to the hotel, Bryan rolled down the window and asked the person in the car next to them if they “had any grey poupon?” It is one of those family memories that always make us laugh! Also, after taking the group Board pictures, I was headed down on the elevator with my husband and some of the other Board members – Shari Sandlin and her husband, Robert, Dale Stehle, Kirksey Gregg and others. This was in the years when we dressed in ball gowns to attend the Saturday Night Gala which began with the big ‘Grand March’. Well, we were faced with the unfortunate circumstances of the elevator getting stuck between floors. Meanwhile, Dianna Nordman was becoming very impatient and anxious wondering where we all were because the evening events could not begin without the ‘Grand March’. Of course, her initial thoughts were that I had lured all the Board members off somewhere to have a few drinks on our way. She finally found out that we were stuck in the elevator. Finally, they were able to get the door open; however, we were still stuck between floors. The hotel manager got a chair and was able to maneuver it into the elevator. Of course, that’s when the real fun began as all of us in our Tuxs and Formals Gowns had to climb up on the chair and out onto the floor…needless to say, my white formal was a mess and we were all completely sweating from being trapped in a hot elevator for 30 minutes! Although it Twasn’t he Bloomin Texan ctime, April /5 much’ fun at the it all2014 makes for a very fun memory to think back on now. MemberSpotlight Dov E. Art Education All Levels with Teacher Certification favorite movie: La Cage Aux Folles and Torch Song Trilogy How did you get into the floral industry? It was a fluke. My mother had heard that a Jewish man had bought a flower shop and she pushed me to go see him about a job. They didn’t need help at the time, but he told me I could come and observe the everyday goings on to see what it was like. A few months later, I was offered a part time job cleaning, watering and maintaining the shop. I was taught how to design and then…eventually became a member of the shop’s design team. When I graduated from the university, I took over as manager for the next 13 ½ years. Years Involved with TSFA: Over 25 years. First as an employee member while at Kern Place Florist and then my own membership since the establishment of Designs by Dov E. Attended Conventions, competed for Texas Cup seven years before winning it in 1999, and then becoming committee member of the Bloomin’ Texan and Education Committees. Passion(s): Teaching and inspiring others. I have been teaching the Professional Floral Design classes for over 20 years at the El Paso Community College. Be the person you are meant to be. Don’t be somebody just for the sake of fitting in. Be Individual. Each one of us has been given a life to live and a gift to share.
