STANDARDAERO
“While Winnipeg’s many advantages have played a key role in the
accomplishments StandardAero has enjoyed since its founding here
more than 100 years ago, strategic positioning that allows for continued
growth and prosperity trumps past achievements for any enterprise—ours
included. But when we consider everything this city continues to offer our
business, from easy access to applicable talent to competitive operating
costs, we remain convinced that Winnipeg is the right place to bet on our
future.”

f it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Wise words, and arguably a cost-effective approach, too. The problem?
Sometimes things do break. What then? One could logically speculate that StandardAero’s
philosophy—“repair rather than replace”—makes the most sense. Perhaps that’s one reason for
this industry leader’s success, which had its humble beginnings in Winnipeg in 1911 as a sheet-metal
operator before eventually transitioning into an aerospace company now boasting a dozen major
facilities across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, with an additional 13 strategically located
regional service and support centres.
Corporate Leadership
StandardAero is one of the world’s largest independent providers of engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, and the Winnipeg operation remains the company’s largest, employing about 1,300
local professional, administrative and technical personnel. In addition to its MRO-related initiatives in the
city, Scottsdale, Ariz.-based StandardAero also offers airframe MRO, engine component repair, engineering
services, interior completions and paint applications at its various international locations. Collectively, the
company employs nearly 4,000 people, with annual revenues exceeding $1.8 billion (USD).
Market
StandardAero provides comprehensive MRO services and customized solutions for business aviation, commercial aviation, military and industrial power customers in more than 80 nations around the world. The
company attributes its ongoing success to the merger of several businesses occupying complementary
specialties that have exponentially increased its capabilities and generated an unprecedented customer
commitment and value.

When it comes to component repair and overhaul initiatives—the primary thrust of its Winnipeg operation—StandardAero works to reduce turnaround times while optimizing engine performance and minimizing overall operating costs. Its services include repair and overhaul of original equipment manufacturer
(OEM) engine and auxiliary power unit (APU) components for companies like Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney,
Honeywell and General Electric (GE).
In fact, as part of StandardAero’s commitment to providing unsurpassed service and support to its marquis
clients, not to mention its continuing commitment to Winnipeg as a key company hub, the firm partnered with GE to open a $50-million cold weather engine-testing facility in the city a few years ago, which
recently underwent a $26-million upgrade. The centre develops advanced testing methodologies and
equipment for GE Aviation’s commercial and military aircraft engines.
Beyond simply doing things the right way, StandardAero is unceasingly looking for the best way—from developing its own repair processes to redesigning its factories and making them among the most efficient
and environmentally friendly in the world. With all of the complex technologies StandardAero has at its disposal, it’s noteworthy that the company still maintains a ‘green’ mentality. It’s the only third party-registered
aerospace enterprise in the world certified to ISO 14001, which provides a framework that can be followed
to set up an effective environmental management system.
StandardAero targets perfection in all areas, and its Winnipeg-based operation is setting the standard with
its combination of innovation, work ethic and achievement. With these kinds of results, it’s no wonder the
company has become the flying ace in the hole for so many aviation industry heavyweights.
Part of its Grow in Winnipeg series of corporate profiles, Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. is proud to feature
StandardAero as an outstanding example of a leading local business and industry innovator.
