MISSION
The Mission of Mount Aviat Academy is threefold:
• to provide instruction in the message of Christ,
according to the teachings of the Catholic Church,
within the context of the gentle and caring spirit of
St. Francis de Sales;
• to offer an educational environment that promotes
high academic standards;
• to instill the principles of scholarship, citizenship and
service in the minds and hearts of the students.
Educating students to be
no more and no less
than their best.

FROM THE
PRINCIPAL’S DESK:
E
ach school year at
Mount Aviat has
something particular
about it that brings to mind a
special occurrence. For example,
2001 was the year that our
foundress, Leonie Aviat, was
named a Saint; 2014 was the
year we received recognition
as a U.S. Department of
Education Blue Ribbon School
of Excellence; 2016 was the
year we received recognition by Today’s Catholic Teacher as an Innovator in
Catholic Education. In my mind, 2017 will be the year of Middle States
accreditation. While this might not be as exciting as my previous examples,
it is just as important. Not only does this accreditation validate Mount
Aviat as a school, but it also helps us look at each facet of the school to
see where we are, how we are performing and what we can do to improve.
Education is not static; we must continue to grow and change to meet
the needs of our students. So although this process may be arduous, it is
extremely worthwhile. Thank you to our school parents, alumni parents,
alumni, and community members who have helped provide us with your
much needed feedback throughout this process.
School life does not stop while we live out the Middle States process
and the Friends, our Auction Committee and our ever faithful volunteers
kept us going this Fall through another wonderful Roast Beef Dinner, a
beautiful Harvesting Dreams Dinner Auction, our 54th annual Christmas
Bazaar and so many other wonderful events, as you will see in the pages
of this issue of the Link. We also said goodbye to our dear secretary, Mrs.
Connie Lucatamo, as she retired after 44 years. We welcomed Mrs. Pat
Seigel to the front office, who many of you may know from the Friends. In
addition, we also welcomed Mrs. Shannon Cicero back to Mount Aviat in
Reading Resource. We are blessed to have such a wonderful staff and we
continue to try to offer no more and no less than our best to our students
each day.
As always, thank you all for your commitment to Mount Aviat and
support of our Mission.
Yours in Christ,
Sister John Elizabeth Callaghan, OSFS
bringing their spirituality alive. Faculty and staff are even
encouraged to catch students Living Jesus on a daily basis.
Students at Mount Aviat also are encouraged to fulfill
the school’s motto nec plus nec minus each day by giving “no
more and no less than their best.” In 2014, Mount Aviat was
proud to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School
of Excellence, resulting from the efforts of teachers and
students alike to give their best. The National Blue Ribbon
Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary,
middle, and high schools where students perform at very
high levels or where significant improvements are being
made in students’ academic achievement. This prestigious
award is given annually to only 50 private schools
nationwide. In addition, in 2016 sixty percent of the 8th
grade class received high school scholarships.
Finally, students at Mount Aviat learn what it means
to be a good citizen and provide service to their local and
extended communities. In the 2015-2016 school year,
students put in over 2,020 hours of service. Recently, the
school initiated a “morning of service” through which
students give back to the local community in hands-on
activities such as making scarves for a Code Purple shelter,
donating thousands of gently used books for a school in
need, packing lunches and blessing bags for the homeless,
making Easter bags for children in homeless shelters, and
making cards for nursing home residents. Older students
partner with younger students to help guide them through
each of the projects. In addition, in May of 2016 every single
student in the school was sponsored in a Walk2Rebuild
walkathon which raised over $14,000.00 to help the Oblate
Sisters in Ecuador rebuild their schools after a devastating
earthquake. In fact, more than half of our middle school
students joined the school’s service club, the Saint Leonie
Aviat Service Club, which plans and implements service
activities throughout the year (see page 4 to read more about
MAA’s service club).
Mount Aviat’s Mission Statement has been revisited
several times since its creation—yet whether it was during a
long range planning process or Middle States accreditation
process, all those who know Mount Aviat find that the
language is just as appropriate today as it was when it was
written thirty years ago.

1. Mount Aviat students perform service on an international level as they raise
over $14,000 in the Walk2Rebuild walkathon to help the Oblate Sisters in
Ecuador. 2. The Oblate Sisters provide excellent role models of Christian faith
and Salesian spirit for students at Mount Aviat. The Sisters and teachers enjoy
catching students Living Jesus, such as Sr. Michele Elizabeth here with fourth
grader Natalie Griffith. 3. Mount Aviat students plan and participate in service
projects to help the local community, too. Working with her younger buddy
Liam Hudson, Gracie Herron helps prepare Blessing Bags for the homeless in the
community.

MAA’S SERVICE CLUB HELPS SCHOOL LIVE OUT ITS MISSION
“Let us work for the happiness of others.”
M
other Aviat’s familiar advice rings out in new
ways in each generation. Now in its 7th year, the
mission of the St. Leonie Aviat Service Club is
to put those words into practice, in and outside of school.
Although the current service club has only existed for a few
years, the tradition dates back to the school’s beginnings.
Already in the early 1970s, Sr. John Marie founded a local
chapter of the Beta Club for Mount Aviat Academy’s first
generation of upper elementary students. After her departure
to serve as principal in Drexel Hill, PA, other sisters led a
variety of different kinds of service clubs over the years. Sr.
Anne Elizabeth, Sr. Frances Carol (now in Fredericksburg,
VA), and Sr. Mary Bertha each took the lead at different
points in time. Then, in 2008, Mrs. Elizabeth Keefe, whose
youngest children were in and entering middle school, felt
called to begin a new service club, as there had not been one
for some years. Although the staff strives to lead all students
to reach out to others, following the example of Mother
Aviat, it seemed important to reinstate a group of students
with the exclusive purpose of building up the community
through service. She hoped that middle school students, in
particular, would be inspired to give of themselves in a world
that expects so little from preteens and teenagers. Mrs.
Keefe enlisted Sr. Audrey Frances, then newly arrived at the
school, to help her, and Sister has remained at that post as
the Keefes participated in the club for years and went on to
graduate.
4 Mount Aviat Academy
The current service club involves middle school students
and had to be limited to grades 6-8 this year due to
continued growth. It includes 38 energetic members in the
2016-17 school year. The students enjoy working together
to make a positive difference, and generally building up a
spirit of service in the school through their availability to
help out whenever needed. So far this year, they have run
a successful bake sale for the missions, collected food items
for the Giving Tree for Christmas, and have gone caroling
and decorating for Christmas at Singerly Manor Assisted
Living Center. Members typically give between 7 and 10
hours of service each year and can count those hours toward
the school requirement of 10 hours of service per year for
students in first grade and older.
Some of the service club’s outreach events quickly
became traditions, such as running a car wash in the spring
for the Cecil County Pregnancy Center, and running the
Advent Giving Tree. In one case, the service club simply
joined in a tradition that Mrs. Judith Baker had begun
with her third graders, and which she continues to support,
namely, making “To Go Bag” lunches for the homeless at
the Newark Empowerment Center.
The nature of the outreach events and the role that
students play in planning and running them continues to
evolve from year to year. Whatever form their service takes,
the staff is proud to see our students joyfully working “for
the happiness of others.”
LADY KNIGHTS SERVE UP A STELLAR SEASON
T
he volleyball program at Mount Aviat continued
its strong tradition of participation, growth,
teamwork, and achievement this past fall. This year’s
participation was so strong that the Athletic Association
supported five volleyball teams in the Catholic Diocese of
Wilmington league—one team for every class in grades
four through eight. Led by Volleyball Program Coordinator
Tracy Willman, 43 student athletes experienced the fun,
teamwork, and fitness benefits of playing the sport of
volleyball with their classmates. The fourth grade team was
coached by Kim Strohmeier and Craig Fausnaugh. The ten
new players formed an exceptionally strong and cohesive
new team, and impressively won every one of their matches.
The 5th grade team, coached by Cinda Thomas and Amy
Ducharme, had a very strong second season together,
winning eight of their ten matches. Team members showed
great improvement in their skills and worked together to
strengthen their teamwork. The sixth grade team, coached
by George Poole and Vera Greenplate, also achieved an
undefeated season. Their unwavering focus and strong play
also earned the team 1st Place in their very first tournament.
Coached by Craig Fausnaugh, Jeff Stout, and Larry Ertle,
the O Division Varsity team was comprised of seventh
graders. The team’s perseverance and determination enabled
them to pull through some tough matches to end their
season with an undefeated record. The team then fought
hard throughout their division’s playoffs and took home
the 1st Place Championship Trophy. Courtney Ryan and
Ed Murray coached the Y1 Division Varsity team, which
was made up of all eighth grade students. The team ended
the regular season with a 5-wins/5-losses record in a highly
competitive division, and the girls enjoyed their last season
of playing volleyball together with their classmates.
For the fourth straight year, the volleyball players and
their families attended a University of Delaware women’s
volleyball match, where our players formed the “Lady Hen’s
High-Five Tunnel” after intermission (see photo). The
players, coaches, and family members all wrapped up their
successful seasons with individual team celebrations that
included a variety of fun activities, such as players vs. parents
volleyball matches, lots of food, fun music, and even a couple
dance routines! Co-coaches Vera Greenplate and George
Poole together will take over the role of Volleyball Program
Coordinator in the fall, while continuing to lead their
team. A big “thank you” goes out to the coaches, players,
and families for the work they do each year to make this
program such a special part of Mount Aviat.

New Stove Gives New Life to Kitchen for Friends
O
n August 25th, the Friends and Families of the
Oblate Sisters kicked off the school year with their
first event, the Ice Cream Social, which is held to
welcome new students and their families to Mount Aviat
Academy. New students enjoyed ice cream sundaes while
parents met their mentor families and learned about the many
exciting things that MAA offers as well as school routines.
As September quickly arrived, preparation began for
MAA’s annual Roast Beef Dinner. Over 500 dinners were
served thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped
prepare for the event as well as work the day of the event,
including over 20 middle school students.
On October 30th, the Friends hosted the annual Trunk
and Treat with one of the largest turnouts to date. Children
were able to fill up their bags while trick or treating from
vehicle to vehicle. This fun family event enables students and
their families to work together to decorate the family vehicle
in hopes of having the most creative trunk in the parking
lot. Congratulations to the Beverung family who was named
8 Mount Aviat Academy
the winner with a pirate theme! Congratulations to the
Corigliano and Moore families for their second and third
place wins!
On the heels of Trunk or Treat, the Friends set forth
to plan for Mount Aviat’s 54th Christmas Bazaar. Before
any preparations got underway in the kitchen, Sister John
Elizabeth held a small prayer service to bless the new stove;
the previous stove was the original stove in the gym kitchen.
After the blessing, the preparations began in earnest with
plans for 5,000 cream puffs; 2,000 stuffed cabbages; and
150 pies. Each year the success of Mount Aviat’s Christmas
Bazaar is due to the numerous volunteers who give their time
so willingly; thank you, everyone.
Special thanks to the chairs of each of these events:
Ellen Kimura for the Roast Beef dinner; Wendy Moschella
and Sister Joseph Margaret for Trunk or Treat; and Wendy
Moschella, Gloria Smith, and Kristen Najera for the Bazaar.
As this issue goes to print, the Friends look forward to
another successful Cream Puff Day on February 10th.

I
first encountered Connie when she registered to attend
our High School for Girls, the original Mount Aviat
Academy, with accommodations for boarders. She was a
lovely, level-headed, fun person and she made friends easily. I
taught Connie several subjects, but the one that stands out the
most was Religion. Connie took her faith very seriously and
asked many questions in class. We actually had an ongoing
argument that lasted for several months. The argument was
on how to interpret the scriptures that say we are made in the
image of God. We never did come to a consensus, but enjoyed
the explorations that were shared on our ongoing search for
the truth. At that time, Connie styled her hair according to
the custom of the 1960s: short, straight and a curled ring at
the bottom, formed by uncomfortable curlers that were slept
on all night. As was the tradition, Connie had her picture
taken in her school uniform with this hairstyle. Years later,
she had this picture at her desk in the school’s main office.
I love that picture. Anytime I came to the office, my eyes
went to that picture first…and it always brought a barrage of
memories.
Connie loved our school and our staff and her dream
was that one day she would have a job at our school. She
had a gentle personality and a welcoming way of greeting
visitors so she was given the position of secretary. At least two
generations know her in that capacity.
During the 44 years that Connie worked at our school,
she married and started a family of her own. It was a very
special day when Connie would bring each of her children
one by one to enroll at Mount Aviat Academy and then to do
the same for her grandchildren. May her retirement bring her
many blessings!

DINNER AUCTION HELPS FUND
NEW GYMNASIUM ROOF
T
he theme of this year’s 24th Annual Dinner Auction
was Harvesting Dreams, and our guests helped
us celebrate the joy of educating our students and
sending them into the world as productive citizens. The
Chesapeake Inn again catered the meal, beginning with
delicious hors d’oeuvres featuring chicken cordon bleu purse,
Dalmatia fig flat bread, mini crabcakes, garlic puffs and
seared tenderloin tips. The buffet featured a whole roasted
carved pig, turkey croquettes, rock fish, pumpkin ravioli,
smashed potatoes, a vegetable medley and pickled beets and
onions. The dessert was Apple Brown Betty with ice cream
and vanilla whipped cream.
Our 120 guests had a wide variety of silent auction
items on which to bid, featuring original photography and
artwork, handmade jewelry and hand carved wooden art
pieces from the Oblate missions in Ecuador and South
Africa, personal training sessions, iPad Pro with WiFi,
family photography sessions, Troy Bilt Gas Blower and
Vac, one-night stay at the Ship Watch Inn, LuLaRoe gift
certificates, designer handbags, Bose Speakers, box seats
at the Fair Hill Races, Gore Tex Jacket, and swim party at
Kids First Swim School. Self portraits painted by students at
the Mission School in South Africa were a highlight of the
Silent Auction. The mission students donated their portraits
to be sold at our auction, with the proceeds going to help the
schools in Ecuador destroyed by the earthquakes.
The class baskets were exceptionally well received, with
our guests enthusiastically bidding on the harvest and home
themed baskets. Items included were iHome robotic vacuum
cleaner, pop-up canopy, professional home cleaning by
Country Clean, Stanley rolling tool chest, Butane outdoor
stove, and rolling stainless entertainment cooler.
10 Mount Aviat Academy
Col. Robert Burkheimer again offered his services as
auctioneer for the Live Auction, and our guests filled the
gym with the joyful noise of excited bidding. Live auction
items included beautiful original artwork, a week’s stay at
Dewey Beach during the summer of 2017; Easter Vacation
in Ocean City, Maryland; Generac Gas Pressure Washer;
Restored 1860 Jenny Lind Stagecoach Trunk; Wine Tasting
Party for 25-30 Guests; Woody’s Crab House Dining
Extravaganza for 20 guests; Tiki Bar Happy Hour for 15
guests at the Chesapeake Inn; and the highlight of the
auction, a Kohler & Campbell Baby Grand Piano. Our
guests were able to hear the beauty of this piano throughout
the evening, as our school pianist, Mr. Mario Padovani,
played a lovely selection of familiar pieces.
Each year, Mount Aviat has used the proceeds of
the auction to purchase “large ticket” items that directly
benefit our students, allowing us to keep tuition reasonable
while continuing to improve our programs and physical
environment. This year, the Auction proceeds were used to
help fund the new roof for the gymnasium. We all know
how important the gymnasium is to the school, which is
used throughout the school year for our events and activities.
Thanks to the generosity of our guests, the new roof will add
many more years to this essential building.
Special thanks to our generous sponsors and advertisers
who provide the funding necessary to hold this annual event.
Sponsors include Newark Dental Associates; American
Partner Technologies, LLC; Salesianum School; Padua
Academy; Premier Auto and Tire; The Alias Group; and
Remline Corporation. Advertisers include Formal Affairs
and The Dance Station, LLC. The Auction Committee
thanks our sponsors and advertisers for their spirit of giving,
and we, in turn, support the community that is so generous
to us. The Auction Committee also extends a warm thank
you to all of our donors, volunteers, and guests. It takes
many hands and hearts to make this event a success, and our
students benefit from your generosity. Thank you.
