The most frequent public means of transport are buses and trains. If we want to travel by train we
have to go to a railway station. There is a big main hall with a ticket office where we buy either a
single or return ticket. We can check the time of our train on the arrival and departure board where
the destination, train number, platform number and the times are displayed. If we travel by a direct
train we don´t have to change.
If we have a lot of time before our train arrives we can leave our luggage in a left-luggage office or
lock it in a luggage locker. We can wait for our train in a waiting room and read a newspaper or
magazine which we can buy at a bookstall.
When the arrival of our train is announced we go to a platform and get on the train. We find a free
seat – either aisle seat or widow seat. When the conductor comes we show him our ticket and he
checks it.
After reaching our destination we get off the train.

Sometimes serious accidents happen on the main roads during the rush hour when people hurry to
work. If there are roadworks or if a car or lorry breaks down in the middle of the road, a terrible
traffic jam can be created. Some drivers start to get impatient or get angry and try to overcome the
slow-moving traffic. But if another car is coming in the opposite direction, the drivers can´t stop their
cars even if they brake very hard and crash into each other. They can be badly injured or even killed
and their cars are badly damaged . Other accidents can happen if drivers exceed the speed limit or
they don´t observe some other traffic rules. It can also be dangerous if they drive a car without
having a driving licence or if they don´t fasten their seat belts. In winter they can get a skid on a
slippery road , lose control of the car and crash into a wall or a road sign.
