George Washington was born on
February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland
County, Virginia. George was the
oldest of six children.

George loved to fish, sail, and ride his horse. When
George attended school he excelled in math. He
completed his education by the time he was
fifteen years old. When he finished school, he
wanted to join the British Navy, but his mother
wouldn’t allow it.

George’s father died when he was eleven years old.
Soon after, he started using his father’s surveying
tools. He liked surveying and used the tools to
measure everything from forests to fields. When
he was 16, he was given his first job surveying land.

In 1753, George Washington joined the Virginia
army. He was brave and eventually was given
command of Virginia’s entire military force.

At the age of 26, George fell in love with Martha
Custis. Martha was a widow with two children.
They married on January 6, 1759.

George Washington, and his wife Martha,
moved into Mount Vernon. The house is
located in northern Virginia and once
belonged to George’s brother.

In 1775, George Washington was chosen to lead the
Continental Army during The Revolutionary War. He
accepted, but refused to take any payment for his
services. The war lasted eight years. When the colonies
won and the war ended, George Washington was a hero.

George Washington was not only a hero, he was
also a well-known and loved leader. He was elected
the first president of the United States in 1789.
In 1792, George was reelected for a 2nd term.

In 1799, George Washington became very ill and
died. He is buried at Mount Vernon with his
family. George Washington is considered the
“Father of Our Country.”
