January 2017 Principal`s Newsletter

PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER
Volume 23, Issue 2
Millville Jr/Sr High School
January 2017
From the Principal’s Desk,
Happy New Year! A special
thanks goes out to all parents, students and faculty/
staff members for a wonderful
first semester. We have a lot
of accomplishments being
highlighted in this newsletter
that we can all be proud of. It
is a great pleasure to recognize our students for their
talents and abilities. My challenge for all students in the
new year is to continue to
strive for academic excellence, and to remain focused
on your future goals.
Safety Reminder:
Please remind your students
that are walking to/from
school, to utilize our new
school crossing guard, located by the tennis courts when
crossing the street. If you are
dropping your students off in
the morning, please continue
to drop your students off
along the sidewalk edge in
front of the school. We are
concerned about our student’s safety, and we do not
want to see anyone get hurt,
so please pay special attention to this safety reminder.
Upcoming Benchmark
Assessments:
We are administering the
4Sight Benchmark assessments January 23rd – 27th,
to our 7th and 8th grade students in their Math & English
Language Arts classes. The
purpose of these benchmark
assessments is to help us to
better prepare our students
for the upcoming PSSA state
assessments. The PSSA state
assessments will begin the
week of April 3rd.
As parents, you play an important part in this process.
Talk to your student about the
importance of doing their
best on these benchmark
assessments. We utilize the
benchmark results to identify
new learning, and to address
individual student needs.
Helping your student realize
the importance of
these assessments, and what
they will be used for will help
us to better prepare them for
the state assessments.

Sports Corner
From the Athletic Director:
Fall sports wrap up: The boys’ soccer team won the District IV class A soccer championship for the second year in a row by defeating East Juniata 1 to 0. They then defeated Mt. View 2 to 0 in the first round of the PIAA state tournament, but were defeated 4 to 0 by Kutztown in the state quarterfinals to end a very successful season.
The boys won a Mid-Penn title and a District IV title. In post season honors, Griffin
Bower, Keegan Bower, Kelly Holdren, and Jaylen Reichner were all named to the Mid
-Penn All-Star Team. Keegan Bower was also named to the All-State Soccer Team.
The girls’ soccer team lost in the first round of District IV play-offs to conclude a successful season for the Lady Quakers. Morgan Bower and Averi Rine were named to
the Mid-Penn All-Star Team. Morgan was also selected for the All-State Soccer Team.
Winter sports: We are now heavily involved with winter sports. At this time the girls’ basketball team has a 4 and 5 record.
Even though the team is real young, they have set goals of having a winning record and qualifying for District IV play-offs.
The boys are off to a very good start. Their record as of this report is 9 and 0. With four starters back from last year, they
hope to compete for league and district titles. Our cheerleading squad is composed of fourteen girls this year and is under
the direction of a new coach, Ainsley Kitchen. We have two wrestlers going to Benton to wrestle at the varsity level; both
Zach Kremer and Kaleb Michael are doing well and we are also sending three Jr. high wrestlers to Benton: Mason Michael, Zach Poust & Caden Temple. Congratulations to Caden Temple for recently being recognized as the JR High Wrestler of the Week! The co-op between Benton and Millville is working out nicely. IMPORTANT PARENT REMINDERS:
Student Absences & Dismissals: Parents please remember to call the high school office at
570-458-5538, option 2 to report your student will be absent and/or late to school.
Also, please remember to send a written absence excuse to school with your student when
they come in late or the day they return from being absent. Excuses should be turned into
the high school office within three days from the absence.
If your student is going to be excused early for an appointment, please send a note to school
with your student that morning to be turned into the office. If we have a note or phone call
from you for the dismissal, the student may sign themselves out. Otherwise, please come
into the office to sign out your student. The only accepted appointments for an excused
absence are doctor, dentist, or legal obligations (please refer to page 8 of the 2016-2017 Student Handbook).
Procedure if your student becomes ill or is not feeling well while at school: Students should report to the school nurse, or to the main
office if the nurse is not in, if they become ill and are not feeling well during the school day. The nurse will evaluate their symptoms
and decide if they should try to remain in school or if they should be sent home.
After School Arrangements: We understand that plans change and emergencies arise that are unforeseen, but if you know ahead of
time that your student will have different after school plans for the day, please try to let them know before they arrive to school for the
day. If they will be riding a different bus or getting off at a different stop, they need a note from you to be approved by the principal to
hand to the bus driver. If they normally ride the bus, but you will be picking them up at the end of the day, let them know where you will
be parked so they can meet you at dismissal time. Planning ahead helps keep classroom disruptions to a minimum and ensures that
your student knows what to do at dismissal time.
Community Web Portal: By now, if you have internet access, you should already be signed up to access your student’s grades and
assignments on Sapphire. If not, to create your account, log onto our District website (www.millsd.us), click on the Sapphire link in the
upper right hand corner. When you are redirected to Sapphire, click the Community Portal option then click on “Don’t have an account?”. In the keyword box enter the word “Quakers” and press the continue button. This will take you to the Sapphire Community
Web Portal User Agreement page. Please read over the agreement carefully and if you agree to the policies, select “Yes” and click
“Continue” at the bottom of the page. Complete the required info on the next page, click “Save form and Continue”. Once you submit
the form you will get a message thanking you for submitting your form. You will need to print, sign, and return the form to the school.
Your student may drop it off in the high school office. Within a few days of returning the form to the school, you will receive an email
from Sapphire that your account has been approved. You will then be able to go to the District home page, click on the Sapphire link
to access the Welcome page to login to your Sapphire account by entering your username, password, and PIN number (this is a randomly generated number by Sapphire and cannot be changed). If you have any questions, please call the district office at 570-4585538, option 3. If you do not have internet access at home, please be sure to notify the H.S. office so we know to mail you paper
copies of progress reports, report cards, etc.
