about topsy beadwork
Since its inception in 2002, the Topsy Beadwork Project has
developed into a self-sustainable, dynamic and colourful
enterprise. Over the past decade, it has given young rural women
not only a relatively steady income, but also the self-confidence
to take their lives into their own hands. Their beadwork has
enabled them to acquire an identity, respect and status within
their community.
Each beader is his, but predominantly her, own business entity,
and a high regard for quality and craftsmanship is vital to the
success of their business. The products are distributed locally
and internationally. In particular demand are The Topsy Ribbon
keyrings and brooches. Topsy Tots, a trio of beaded children,
was exclusively designed for Topsy by Christine Fischer, a wellknown Johannesburg artist. The Topsy Ribbons and Topsy Tots
are attractive fashion accessories which serve as a vehicle for
raising awareness of the plight of children affected by HIV and
AIDS.
Topsy’s beadwork products are sold at various outlets in South
