Breakout 8: Voluntary Air Sampling Program

VOLUNTARY AIR SAMPLING
PROGRAM
Presented by
Jim Kegebein MSIH, STSC
AGENDA
1. Discuss the Voluntary Air Sampling Program
2. Review the 9 Steps
3. Explain the Forms and data required
4. Describe benefits to you
Does your employer have a “Welding Fume Exposure Control
Program”?
Did you know that welding on stainless steel generates a fume
that is a "CONFIRMED HUMAN CARCINOGEN“ that can
contribute to an increased risk of cancer when not properly
ventilated?
Did you know that welding on mild steel generates a fume that
is a "REPRODUCTIVE TOXIN“?

What is the
VOLUNTARY AIR SAMPLING PROGRAM
* You take the air samples
* You work directly with the lab and pay lab fees
and postage
* No fee for using air sampling pumps
* You work with me throughout the process, no
fee
WHY ARE WE HERE
To Determine Airborne Exposure

Step 4: REQUEST SAMPLING EQUIPMENT
Contact SGS Galson Lab for air sampling
equipment and sampling media; and mention
“IRONWORKERS”. 1.888.432.5337, ask for Tonya
Lancaster, Account Manager
NOTE: LET THEM KNOW IF YOU ARE SAMPLING
FOR STAINLESS STEEL WELDING, HEATING,
GRINDING, ETC. or OTHERS

Step 5: PREPARE EQUIPMENT
Client receives air sampling equipment and sampling media
A. Prepare pumps for sampling by charging batteries, can take up to 12
hours to charge and should be done the day before sampling (red to
green); at the same time prepare related paperwork.
B. The ON/OFF switch is under the cover on the top. Do not adjust the
flow rate. Note that there is also a timer under the cover that resets if
the pump flow is resisted by restricting the hose.
C. Read all information sent with the pumps.
D. Connect and assign each sample and pump an ID number.
Note: pre-sampling calibration, post calibration and related calculation
and some paper work will be performed by SGS Galson Laboratories.
Blanks will not be used. Direct any questions to Jim Kegebein.

Step 6: CONDUCT SAMPLING
A. Client performs air sampling. Remember for
welding fume samples, the sample cassette
should be under the welding hood.
B. Completes Air Sampling Form for each
sample.
C. Takes photos and notes.
AIR SAMPLING FORM
• To be completed for EACH sample taken
• To include date, sample and pump numbers,
job description, pump running time, etc.

Step 7: RETURN SAMPLES AND EQUIPMENT
Returns all equipment and sample media to lab
with completed lab “Chain of Custody” form.
Note: Stainless steel sample must be sent to the
lab within 24 hours of sampling and request
Hexavelent Chromium for analysis; all other
samples can be sent by regular carrier.
