In astrology, those born between May 1–20 are Bulls of Taurus. Bulls show a steady persistence in endeavors both professional and personal, and after working hard, they are not shy about rewarding themselves for a job well done. Those born between May 21–31 are Gemini’s Twins. The Twins represent energetic communication and interaction. Curious Geminis love to collect and share information. Witty and intellectual, they attract many friends, mentors, and colleagues. Special birthday wishes to our residents! Not only does our mission apply to how we treat our residents, but our team members practice it in their everyday lives. Our Skylark team members have families they are providing for, they are students and they donate their time to volunteer to different organizations. In recognition of the outstanding service our Team Members provide, we would like to highlight one Team Member a month and provide special recognition for going above and beyond. This month we would like to recognize Brianna Barnes – A caregiver, a nursing student and the Luminaria Chair for Relay for Life. Please see the article on Brianna to learn a little bit about her life. If you have a team member you would like to recommend for recognition, please let the Director of Life Enrichment, Tim, or I know who and why you believe they should be honored. May 2016 Life Enrichment Highlights Poem In Your Pocket Day! Here at Skylark we have several entertainers/performers that come and share their gifts. Each performance provides great opportunities to come together and socialize. Music can also heighten positive emotions, stimulating hits of dopamine that make us feel good or even elated. Today we will list a handful of the performers that come to Skylark and a brief explanation on what they do: Heart & Hope Music: Offers a unique, therapeutic, lifeenriching musical program of love, hope, comfort, humor and healing. Donny Rose enjoys providing instruments for those interested in playing along. He takes request and enjoys playing his guitar. Julie Roze also plays guitar while having fun with a her sing a-longs where everyone can sing. Ben McReynolds: Ben comes to Skylark once per month and provides a beautiful piano performance everytime. In appreciation for poetry, students from Ashland Middle School celebrated with Skylark by passing out poems on Poem in Your Pocket Day! Jenifer Knipple: Jenifer is a multi talented individual. When she comes to Skylark she provides a saxophonic performance of classical, modern, electronic and pop saxophone music. Louis Faro: Louis is one of our newer performers and has really come in with a bang - His zest for life really shines during his energetic performances! Anna & Tom: They have been coming to Skylark for awhile now and after experiencing one of their performances you’d understand why. Their positive energy and Folk inspired music is a Skylark favorite! In recognition of the outstanding service our Team Members provide, Skylark is highlighting one Team Member a month and providing special recognition for going above and beyond – Congratulations to Brianna Barnes for being the Employee of the Month for the month of May! Brianna has been with Skylark working as a Care Giver since September 2015. She is a Junior at SOU where she is pursuing a career in Nursing. Brianna’s optimistic attitude is infectious and her willingness to work together as a team speaks volumes to her character. She was able to sum up Skylark in three words – home, family and opportunity. Some of the things she has appreciated the most while working at Skylark have been the people she has met and her coworkers. Brianna is a caring, hard working and compassionate individual of which Skylark is proud to have part of their team. We know Brianna is a student at SOU, but what we didn’t know is that she works another job with on-campus housing at SOU, is the Luminaria Chair for Relay for Life and has a cat named Axel of whom she loves dearly! When not working or involved with school, Brianna loves being outdoors – She enjoys hiking, swimming and has a passion for wake boarding. Walking Group Cori’s Marketing World I have been thinking about “personal connections” a lot lately - This is one of the core principles of Mission Senior Living. Being the Activity Director for years at Skylark and now Marketing Director, I have made an incredible amount of personal connections during my more than six years here. These personal connections include sitting with our incredible residents at Skylark, to someone who is touring, to so many members of the community. I have thought so often about writing down these “connections” and making a book of sorts because these chance encounters are priceless, funny, poignant and oh so memorable. It is these moments in time, however long or brief, that make a lasting impression on a person, and I am so fortunate to have all of you in my life each day. Sklark has a Walking Group that meets 4-5 times every month – Participants are both from Assisted Living and Memory Care. Now that the weather here in Ashland is getting warmer, the walking group is becoming more and more popular. Walking groups provide a wide range of both physical and mental health perks – There can be improvements in blood pressure, body fat, lung function, depression, etc. Irene loves attending Skylark’s Painting Group and always has beautiful work. As new residents move into Skylark, they become a part of the family, the “connection” as they meld into the day-to-day events. We not only gain a new resident, but family and friends with whom they are connected. This, in turn, creates an even bigger connection and so many more chance encounters from which to learn and grow! Thanks to all of you, our Skylark residents, for letting me share a part of your lives! A few pieces of artwork from Skylark’s Painting Group Tosha works in Memory Care and loves to bake – She was able to make a Pineapple Upside Down Cake and everyone loved it! Ice Cream Social
