Page 1 of 6 Welcome to AP Psychology Summer Work! Any questions? Don’t hesitate to write: [email protected] Our major goal in AP Psychology is, obviously, to pass the AP exam in May. Therefore, the majority of our efforts will be directed toward that end. Due to the breadth of the curriculum to be tested (18 chapters worth!), it is almost impossible to cover it all before May. So, over the summer we will get a jump start! 1. Read, read, read! In order for you to get a full grasp of the many concepts in this book, it is IMPERATIVE that you read! This is a fast-paced class and we will not always have time to go into all of the concepts with great detail. Many of these terms and ideas are brand new to you! Therefore, if you do not read the text, it will be like trying to drive from Santa Cruz to New York without a map! 2. You will be required to do the following two assignments over the summer, which will require you to open and read your textbook! Both of these assignments are due on the first day of class (8/14/14). a. Read the following 20 selections from Forty Studies That Changed Psychology by Roger Hock (5th edition) – different editions have different content, so please buy the 5th!: 1) One Brain or Two? ………………………………… pg 1 2) Are You a “Natural”? ……………………………… pg 18 3) Watch Out for the Visual Cliff …………………. pg 26 4) Un-romancing the Dream ………………………. pg 48 5) It’s Not Just About Salivating Dogs …………. pg 64 6) Little Emotional Albert ………………………….. pg 71 7) Knock Wood! ………………………………………... pg 77 8) See Aggression … Do… …………………………… pg 84 9) Thanks for the Memories! ……………………... pg 116 10) Discovering Love ………………………………….. pg 126 11) How Moral are You? ……………………………… pg 142 12) Are you the Master…? ……………………………. pg 192 13) The One; the Many… ……………………………… pg 217 14) Who’s Crazy Here, …? ……………………………. pg 226 15) You’re Getting Defensive Again! …………….. pg 234 16) Projections of Who You Are …………………... pg 272 17) Picture This! …………………………………………. pg 279 18) The Power of Conformity ……………………… pg 295 19) To Help or Not to Help …………………………... pg 300 20) Obey at Any Cost? …………………………………. pg 308 Summarize each of these studies in 2-3 paragraphs, typed, double spaced, one-inch (1”) margins. Be sure to mention the name of the scientist or researcher, the purpose of the study, the set-up, and the significant outcomes. This compilation of summaries is due on the first day of class (8/14/14). McRae 5/2014 Page 2 of 6 b. Reach Ch.9 – Memory and complete the attached worksheet. Also, complete flashcards for the key terms found on the last page of Ch.9 only in your Myers (8th edition) text book. Both the worksheet and flashcards will be due on the first day of class (8/14/14). 3. You will be tested on the materials from Forty Studies That Changed Psychology (Hock, R., 5th ed.) on Monday, (8/18/14). 4. You will be tested on the materials in Chapter 9 (Myers, D., 8th ed.) during the second week of school on your block day, either Thursday, 8/21/14 or Friday, 8/22/14. 5. Space out this work throughout the summer. DO NOT leave it all for the last week; you will not finish it, the quality will be poor and you will not reap the benefits of the course by starting off on the wrong foot! 6. If you fail to complete this work by the first day of class, you must schedule a meeting with me to be held no later than the end of the first week of school (Thursday, 8/21/14). 7. REMEMBER to email me if you have any questions! [email protected] I look forward to this being an exciting school year for us! We will have many opportunities to share ideas and experiences, so come with an open mind and a readiness to SPEAK UP! Your level of participation in class discussion directly affects your grade and your understanding of class material. Therefore, I look forward to hearing what you and your classmates have to say and seeing your knowledge grow in the process! Have a great summer! It is our ability to store and retrieve information” (Myers, 2007, p. 349). INSTRUCTIONS: The questions along with your answers are to be typed. I. The Phenomenon of Memory 1. When is your memory ability most apparent? What is this known as? 2. How is our memory different from a computer’s memory? 3. Create the Atkinson/Shiffrin 3-Stage Processing Model of Memory. II. Encoding: Getting Information In 1. What is the difference between automatic and effortful processing? 2. Create an analogy bridge map showing the Pavolv/Ebbinghaus relationship: 3. What did Ebbinghaus discover? 4. How is the spacing effect supported by biology (adaptations)? 5. Explain the serial position effect? 6. What kind of encoding yields the best memory of verbal information? Why? 7. What information is more likely to be processed deeply and accessibly? Why? 8. What is rosy retrospection? 9. How do mnemonic devices assist with memory? 10. How do chunking and hierarchies assist with memory? III. Storage: Retaining Information 1. What are iconic memory and echoic memory and how do they work? 2. How is short-term memory limited? 3. Describe Karl Lashley’s research and findings. McRae 5/2014 Page 4 of 6 4. How does Long Term Potentiation aid learning (also see diagram on p. 365)? What research supports this? 5. After being knocked out, why does a boxer have no memory of the round? 6. How do hormones stimulate and inhibit memory? 7. Explain the two memory systems we have and the research that supports this theory. 8. What is the brain’s librarian and how does it work? 9. What is the cerebellum’s role in memory? IV. Retrieval: Getting Information Out 1. Explain the differences and the relationships between recall, recognition, and relearning. 2. What are retrieval cues? What are the best types of retrieval cues? Why? 3. What influence do context effects have on memory? Why? 4. What is state-dependent memory? 5. What effects do moods have on memory? V. Forgetting 1. What are Schacter’s “seven sins of memory? 2. When does forgetting occur? 3. Give two examples of encoding failure NOT mentioned in the text. 4. What “psychology law” does the forgetting curve support? 5. What did Bahrick’s findings show about storage decay? 6. What are two explanations of the forgetting curves? 7. Explain retrieval failure. What types of interference will affect retrieval? 8. Give an example of both types of interference NOT mentioned in the text. 9. What does the research of Jenkins and Dallenbach suggest about learning? 10. Explain the psychoanalytic perspective regarding forgetting. McRae 5/2014 Page 5 of 6 VI. Memory Construction 1. Summarize the research supporting misinformation and imagination effects? 2. How does source amnesia affect memory? 3. What have brain scans revealed about false memories? 4. What techniques should police use to avoid the misinformation effect? 5. What are the optimal circumstances for obtaining credible eyewitness testimony from children? 6. Summarize the study conducted by Linda Meyer Williams. What were the results? 7. Summarize the arguments on both sides regarding repressed/constructed memories of abuse. VII. Improving Memory 1.
