Get Ready To Howl
President’s Message
I am pleased to welcome you to participate in Athletics and Recreation
at Thompson Rivers University. Your support of our athletes at games
and fundraisers is appreciated by all of us here at TRU.
TRU also looks forward to a tournamentclass track and field complex currently
under construction on campus.
We are very proud of our varsity athletes and their achievements, both
athletic and scholarly. At TRU, the concept of scholar-athlete is taken very
seriously. We encourage our athletes to perform to the best of their ability
in their sport and their chosen field.
There is a way that everyone, whether
from the campus or our surrounding
community, can participate in athletics
and recreation at TRU. Our game
schedule is posted on our website, and I
invite you to come out to our home
games. I very much enjoy watching our
athletes perform, and I know that you
will, too. Please join me in howling for
the pack!
This year, our varsity athletics teams have a new nickname: the TRU
WolfPack. We look forward to further success in the Canadian Colleges
Athletics Association and to a landmark inaugural year in the Canada
West Conference of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, where the WolfPack is
fielding men’s and women’s teams in basketball and volleyball for the
first time.
Athletics and recreation at TRU is not just for the elite athlete, however.
Our campus offers recreation programs for athletes at all levels of play,
and for those who just want to meet new friends and have fun while
taking part in free activities like ice skating, badminton, floor hockey,
and more.
Students, staff and faculty also have access to our athletics and
recreation facilities, including our weight room, located in the
gymnasium, our track, and the Canada Games pool, which is situated on
our campus.
Sincerely,
Roger H. Barnsley,
President and Vice-Chancellor
Director’s

I would also like to thank the many coaches, team managers, event organizers,
referees, officials and others who have given much time and talent to varsity
athletics, and to those community members who support our athletics teams by
coming to games, buying season’s passes, or volunteering their time and talents
with the TRU Sports Task Force.

Welcome to varsity athletics at Thompson Rivers
University. We’re looking forward to a landmark
year, as our women’s and men’s volleyball and
basketball teams play in the Canadian
Interuniversity Sports league for the first time,
and we’re proud to host both the BCCAA
provincial soccer and BCCAA provincial
badminton championships this year.
It takes dedication to be a good student or a good athlete, and it takes extra
devotion and hard work to be a successful student athlete. Each student
athlete has made many sacrifices to be part of the WolfPack. Win or lose,
they are all champions.
Sincerely,

Moving up to CIS
Playing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) league doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, in TRU’s case, the process took four years.
Although it took a lot of hard work on the part of many people, the move
to CIS made sense for many reasons. When the first letter of enquiry and
expression of interest, and the application that followed were sent to the
Canada West conference of the CIS in 2001, nobody knew that the
University College of the Cariboo was destined to be made a full
university within four years, but in many ways, including its attitude
toward and support for varsity athletics, UCC was already a university,
Conditional acceptance came from the Canada West conference in 2002,
when UCC was permitted to field teams in four sports, women’s
basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s volleyball,
in the Canada West conference of the CIS, providing the university
college hired four full-time coaches, put in place support positions for
athletics, including a sports information director and sports therapist,
and gained acceptance by the CIS.
UCC complied with those conditions, applying to the CIS in 2003, and
receiving its letter of acceptance in June, 2004. UCC, on the cusp of
becoming BC’s newest university, was made a probationary member of
Canada West for three years, with the CIS probationary period being
two years.
Throughout the probationary period, and thereafter, of course, the
university must consistently meet membership standards, including
paying dues on time, a sports therapist available, complying with CIS
awards and game reporting guidelines, and making sure athletes have
regulation facilities to play and practice in.
Expanded Facilities
With the Tournament Capital Facility Expansion Project, currently
underway at Hillside Stadium adjacent to the Canada Games Pool, this
last CIS requirement will be met and surpassed.
When complete in early 2007, TRU’s campus will boast a fieldhouse, with
an international standard indoor track, a multi-function gymnasium,
which will have three hardwood courts with movable partitions to create
a championship court, a 13,000 square foot gymnastics facility, and
lease space for classrooms, retail, food service, sports medicine/rehab,
and a fitness/health studio.
The Stadium itself will include a 400 meter track with an all-weather,
rubberized surface, and artificial turf field, and a 1000-seat grandstand.
There will also be two 65x100 meter soccer fields.
New Look
Campus alterations aren’t the only aspect of the new look of university
sports at Thompson Rivers University. Last year’s change in status from
the University College of the Cariboo to Thompson Rivers University
necessitated a name change for our athletics teams as well.
After a name search that included input from students, the university
community, and the region, the university adopted the nickname
“WolfPack” for its athletics teams. The new nickname denotes strength
and solidarity, and is suitable for both men’s and women’s teams. It is
also highly marketable, lending itself to slogans like “Back the Pack” and
“Howl for the Pack.”
With a new nickname has come a uniform change as well. The red and
purple of the former UCC Sun Demons has been replaced with the bright
orange of the TRU WolfPack, and a new mascot will replace the Sun
Demons “Beamer.”
New Initiatives
With the move to university sports, the need for more
team support has grown. The TRU Sports Task Force, now
in its 26th year, is looking to expand with new members and fresh ideas
for raising funds for TRU athletes and programs.
The success of varsity sports at TRU owes much to the Sports Task Force.
This group of Kamloops business and community members has raised
over $1 million for financial and scholarship support for student athletes
and the athletics program at TRU, but it’s expected that athletics needs
will expand dramatically with CIS membership, requiring fundraising
upwards of $100,000 a year.
The Task Force already fundraises in a number of ways, with its main
activities centered on the annual athletic scholarship campaign at the
first of the year, the Annual Gala Dinner, to be held this year in the TRU
Grand Hall November 25th, and the Annual Golf Tournament held the
first Friday in June. Those wishing to reserve a spot or a table at the Gala,
or those with an item to donate for the auction may call TRU Director of
Athletics and Recreation, Ken Olynyk at 828-5273.
New Hire
TRU Athletics has hired a new Athletic Therapist in preparation for the
upcoming varsity athletics season.
Kevin Brechin, who came to TRU from Victoria, where he worked as a
sports therapist at the University of Victoria and at a private clinic, is a
certified athletic therapist and certified strength and conditioning
therapist with 12 years’ experience working with university, national and
professional teams. He holds a BA in Leisure Service Administration, and
a diploma in Sports Injury Rehabilitation.
4 TRU WolfPack
Back the Pack
This year, it’ll be easy to spot TRU WolfPack season’s pass holders at games and tournaments:
they’ll be the ones wearing the exclusive “I Back the Pack” t-shirts.
The distinctive, fan-oriented t-shirt, available only to those who purchase a season’s pass,
isn’t the only perk of backing the pack. Pass-holders will also get preferred seating and postgame access to players and coaches, along with admission to all games and tournaments,
including access to the soccer and badminton provincial championship tournaments hosted by
TRU this season. They’ll also receive the semi-annual newsletter, WolfPack Tales, and weekly
email updates and game reminders.
For the first time, passes are available for single sports or a combination. A pass for all
basketball games is $80, and a pass for all volleyball games is $60, or fans can save $40 by
purchasing the combined pass for $100. By comparison, an adult admission is $7/game.

Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men’s Basketball
Asst Coach
Will Blair
This year’s Thompson Rivers
University’s men’s basketball team
may be the most talented team he’s
coached to date, according to WolfPack
men’s basketball head coach
Nevin Gleddie.
“I am very pleased to have in place
what I believe will be a very exciting
team to watch, and a team that can
compete with anyone in the country,”
he said.
Asst Coach
Scott Marr
Asst Coach
Ryan Porter
The WolfPack, which will play in the
Canada West conference of the
Canadian Interuniversity Sports league
for the first time this season, swept
the Canadian Colleges Athletics
Association league in its final year of
college ball last year, finishing the
season with a 27-1 win/loss record,
and clinching the provincial and
national championship gold medals.
“If a team was going to make the jump
from one league to the next, you would
dream of winning the championship,”
said Gleddie, who also raked in the
medals last year.
He finished up his last year coaching
college ball with the CCAA National
Coaching Excellence Award, All Sports,
the CCAA Men’s Basketball National
Coach of the Year Award, the BCCAA
Men’s Basketball Provincial Coach of
the Year Award, and the Basketball BC
College Coaching Award.
Seven members of last year’s team
have returned this year, including AllCanadian Sean Garvey, the point guard
sensation who was named national
tournament MVP and BCCAA Men’s
Athlete of the Year, All Sports, for the
2004-05 season.
Fellow veteran Brent Traxel, provincial
playoff MVP and nationals 1st-team
all-star, has also returned to take the
WolfPack into its inaugural CIS season.
Joining them on the court will be
seven-footer Greg Stewart and fellow
second-year players Steve Waring and
Braeden Jones, along with 3rd-year
players Brian Smith, Rob Bergen,
and Jeff Friesen, BCCAA provincials
all-star and one of the conference’s
top rebounders.
Three new recruits, one just out of
high school and two with varsity
experience, will also suit up with the
WolfPack this year. They include Josh
Booy, an experienced, physical athlete
who played for TRU two years before
playing for the University of Ottawa
last year, Joey Farebrother, a talented
8 TRU WolfPack
guard forward who was a 2nd-team allstar when he played for TRU in
2002/03, and Gleddie’s youngest
recruit, Charlie Spurr, a BC provincial
high school 1st-team all-star for the
past two years who was his high
school’s all-time leading scorer.
The WolfPack is also looking forward to
the January arrival of Alessandro
Batista, a multi-talented guard forward
from Brazil who last played for NCAA
Division 3 Warner Pacific College in
Oregon, and represented his country
at the Universidad Games in Turkey
this past summer.
Gleddie is also very pleased with
assistant coaches Will Blair, Scott
Marr and Ryan Porter. “As a group,
they bring a good blend of
personalities, experience, and
creativity, and as alumni of our
program they know me well, and we
make a good team,” said Gleddie.
“Moving up into the CIS, we have
some big shoes to fill, but overall I’m
convinced that this could be the most
talented team that I have coached,”
he said.
“The key will be, as it is every year,
how we come together as a team—the
single-mindedness of this group. We
play an up-tempo, aggressive team
style of play that forces us to trust one
another on the court as well as off.”

Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Basketball
Thompson Rivers University WolfPack
Women’s Basketball team has its work
cut out for it this year: It’s the first
year the team competes at the CIS
level; it’s booked for a very tough
non-conference schedule; and it’s very
young, with five returning players and
the rest freshmen.
The team did well playing college ball
last season, and was tied for second in
the BCCAA standings with a 12-6 winloss record, when a disappointing loss
in the first round put the team out of
the provincial finals.
Remaining to lead the ‘Pack into its
first year competing in university
sports are BCCAA Rookie of the Year
and 1st-team BCCAA All Star Kelley
O'Grady, leading scorer from last year’s
team, 6’1” forward Marisa Dwyer,
second leading scorer last year and
leading rebounder who was a 1st-team
all-star at the AA provincial finals, point
guard Sarah Cameron, a tenacious
playmaker who was injured for most of
last year, 6’ post Caitlin Kettlewell, and
Kali Ellis, a physically tough player who
played much of last year with stress
fractures in her shins.
“Kelley is a very smart and intense
player who is one of the more
fundamentally sound players in the
province. She’ll be the focus point of
our offence from day one,” said Head
Coach Ken Olynyk.
He should know a good player when he
sees one: Olynyk’s 30-year basketball
career includes CIS, Canadian National
Team, and NBA experience, and he has
received a number of awards for both
playing and coaching basketball during
his extensive career, including four
conference and one national Coach of
the Year awards, the Petro-Canada
Olympic Award, and the Labatt's
Olympic Coaches Award.
Olynyk, who is also TRU’s Athletics
Director, has full-time back-up in Joe
Enevoldson, who participated in three
national championships in the four
years he spent assisting TRU men’s
basketball head coach Nevin Gleddie,
then made the jump to CIS in 2003/04
as assistant coach with the UBC
Thunderbirds men’s basketball
program, returning to TRU’s women’s
basketball program for the
2004/05 season.
Also returning after a couple of
years away is Tami MacKinnon, who
played for TRU in 1998/99 before
transferring to the University of
Texas – Pan American, where she
played for a year, returning to play
for TRU in 2002/03.
“We’re expecting huge things from
Tami this year as we enter the toughest
conference in the country,” said
Enevoldson. “Tami adds experience
and toughness in the post, and adds
maturity to a very young team.”
New to the team are Sarah Darley,
perhaps already the team’s best
defender, who will play a key role
this season, Alix Stupich, a AA
Provincials all-star who has already
proven to be a very reliable scorer,
Rebekka Miltimore, a tough defender
who will add some much-needed
muscle in the frontcourt, Kristi Spelay,
who hails from the famed Salmon Arm
Jewels basketball program, and
Whitney Gallamore, a provincial
single-A 1st-team all-star.
“This team has just one player over the
age of 20, and we expect to push the
tempo and utilize our overall quickness
and youthfulness to put points on the
board,” said Olynyk.
“With one of the toughest exhibition
schedules in the country, including
games against Carroll College and
Lewis & Clark State, this team is
preparing itself for the rigours of the
Canada West,” he continued.
“Moving up to the Canada West
conference is going to be a tough
transition, but this team is very capable
of doing just that.”

He’s got a young team, with over half
of the players just out of high school,
and only one returning player, but

Head Coach Patrick Hennelly is eagerly
anticipating the challenge of taking the
team into its first year in the Canada
West conference of CIS.
to have to be tenacious on defense and
we’ll have to have great ball control
and tough serving.”
“I’m attracted by the prospect of
competing in the best conference in
the country,” he said. “I also relish the
opportunity to start and nurture a
program from the beginning. This will
be a tremendous challenge, one I am
looking forward to.”
“Graham was a leader in digs at the
college level, and he’s ready for CIS
play,” said Hennelly, who is expecting
the 5’6” libero to lead his team in
passing and defense.
Coach Hennelly, who came to TRU from
a year-long stint as first assistant
coach at Northern Arizona University
after nine years coaching volleyball at
UBC, has taken a number of teams to
medal spots at national
championships, although he’s not
expecting to hit the podium this year.
“We’re young, and we’ll be giving up
experience and size to every team we
play this year,” he said. “We’re going

at the CCAA playoffs and his team also
won both the BCCAA and CCAA Fair
Play Awards last year.

Hennelly also expects great
performance from 6’2” setter
Flannigan, who was a starter for
Grande Prairie last year. “Tim shows
leadership and intensity on the
court, and he’s excellent at ball
control and decision making,”
commented Hennelly.
“Even as a 2nd-year player, Darcy will
be thrust into a leadership role,” said
Hennelly of the 6’3” outside hitter who
helped his team to a 15-5 win-loss
record along with provincial silver and

Aside from Chris Barisenkoff, who played for
Okanagan two years ago, Chad Coldwell, twotime Merritt Secondary Male Athlete of the Year,
and 6’3” right side Derrick Winchar, all the rest
of the recruits are rookies.
Hennelly is quick to point out the talent in the
making, however. “We’ve got a great crop of
first-year players,” he said.
He’s looking for great results from Turkish high
school recruit Behlul Yavasgel, a 6’4”, 190pound 18-year-old who played 13 times for
Turkey’s National Team, and took the titles Best
Blocker and Best Spiker twice each in the past
four years.
Association MVP three years in a row and
named Athlete of the Year from grades 7 to 12.
Another key recruit is Mitchell Anderson, a
rookie from Whitehorse, Yukon, who
represented Team Yukon in Regina this past
summer. Hennelly’s expecting Anderson to add
some power to the outside hitting position.
Rounding out the freshmen are Coleman
Molnar, a top scholar-athlete in high school,
and Brent Hall, two-time 2nd-team all-star.
Local high school graduates who have joined
the WolfPack this year include setter Jeremy
Jones, who was the top junior and senior
athlete at his high school, Greg Weatherhead, a
6’6” power hitter, libero Bryan Town, and BJ
Peters, who was the Kamloops Volleyball

Hennelly’s looking forward to helping his young
athletes climb the steep learning curve they’ll
encounter in Canada West play. “They’ll get to
be apprentices at the hands of the top teams in
the country, and competing against top teams
can only make you better,” he said.
“There will be many challenges, but this is a
team that will never quit.”

2005/06 Season Preview
Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Volleyball
This year’s WolfPack women’s
volleyball team is going into its first
year of CIS play full of experience and
energy. Five veteran players who
helped the team to win provincial gold
and the fair play award last year are
back this season, along with some very
strong recruits.
“Our team completed its last season in
the CCAA with a 16-4 win-loss record,”
said Head Coach Carrie Barrett. “With
our experienced recruits adding
strength to the core of provincial
championship team returnees we are
looking forward to the competition in
our conference and in CIS this season.”
Heading up the team is 4th-year
outside attacker and BCCAA 1st-team
all-star Robyn Devlin. Other key
returnees include Jessica Baskerville,
winner of a Volleyball Canada Special
Recognition Award, Kristin Peters, most
improved player last year, 6’2” right
side Amanda Spreeuw, and Jessica
Weir, an all-round athlete who has won
all-star and MVP awards in basketball
and soccer, as well as volleyball.
“Robyn is one of our key players, and
her strength on the court and her
leadership qualities in directing our
team dynamics are valuable to meeting
our team goals,” said Barrett.
Returning this season after a year’s
hiatus is 6’1” middle blocker Karalyn
Mackenzie, who played for Team Yukon
two seasons ago, then took a year
off last year while examining her
academic options.
“Despite her year off, Karalyn is
definitely for CIS play,” Barrett said.
“She strengthens our middle attack
and defense considerably, and
she’s a great team player. Her
positive influence is great for the
team’s morale.”
“Kristy is a very athletically talented
young woman who has really
developed in meeting the expectations
that I have already set for her,” Barrett
said. “I’m excited to see her continue
her development in this key role on
our team.”
The team gains further strength with
the exciting out-of-province additions
of Crystal Johnson, 3rd-year transfer
from CCAA Alberta provincial
championship team Grande Prairie
Wolves, and Laura Plouffe, 2nd-year
transfer from Grant MacEwan College
who is fresh off the court from the
Canada Games, where she played with
Team Alberta.
Coach Barrett was also pleased to
recruit Brazilian power hitter
Daniela Bercelli, and Chase high
school grad and club volleyball
all-star Stephanie Torbohm.
“I expect some great things from
Crystal. She’s a very dynamic and
ambitious player, and is very clear in
what her goals are, both athletically
and academically,” said Barrett.
Winner of a BCCAA Coach of the Year
in the 2003/04 season, Barrett is
as concerned with sportsmanship
and scholarship as she is with
on-court performance.
“Laura’s experience as libero on Team
Alberta is very much an asset to our
team, where she’ll play in the same
position. She’s very good at
communication, and directs her team
on the defensive side very positively
and efficiently.”
“I was very pleased that my team
managed an academic average of 3.6
while maintaining medal-standard
performance last year,” she said. “And
with our team’s sportsmanship, and
ethical behavior both on and off the
court, our program has much to be
proud of.”
Replacing 4th year All-Canadian setter
Lisa Strachan is Kristy Alblas, a 3rd
year transfer from Douglas College who
was named a 2nd-team BCCAA All-Star
and Douglas College Scholar-Athlete
last season.
Fans should also be on the lookout for
the WolfPack’s youngest pre-recruit,
Barrett’s baby daughter Emily, born
this past May, who’ll be on the bench
at most every game.

Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men’s Soccer
The focus in soccer this past year has been to
include a bit of an off-season program to better
prepare the WolfPack for the BCCAA league but
as TRU moves towards including soccer as its
next CIS sport, the program will move more and

more towards a full year commitment with offseason training and spring leagues.
Right now, both teams are well into their BCCAA
league season play. At press time, it’s no sure
thing, but TRU’s soccer teams have a good shot
at getting into the provincial finals, with the
women 3rd in the provincial rankings and the
men in 6th place, with four games left to go.
The men’s team has already played the topranked teams on its side of the schedule; the

women still have the two top-ranked teams to play.
Rankings can change a lot with a quarter of the season left
to go, and WolfPack men’s soccer head coach Sean Wallace
is hopeful.
“We’re still alive,” he said. “If we win this weekend, we have
a good chance, but we have to beat Langara or Douglas or
both next weekend.”
WolfPack soccer athletes have been at the top of the
standings throughout the season. Katie Clark, Jackie
Bekkering, Dan Cecchini and Brad Clarke have consistently
been at or near the top of the BCCAA’s soccer scoring
leaders, while Allan Connor has held top goalie spot for two
weeks in a row, with three shut-outs so far this season.
The women’s soccer program at TRU has been and continues
to be one of the most successful in the nation. Along with
the obvious highlight of a national championship in 1999,
the team has won several provincial championships and
national silver medals in the last 10 years, and with that
placed many athletes on CCAA National All Star team. The
team draws many of the top players from the Kamloops
youth organization – a credit to the community and all star
coaches in the area who work hard to bring the girls to the
university level of play.
Trainer
Kevin Brechin
“We have an excellent soccer program here at TRU, and
we’re lucky to be situated in a community with
comprehensive soccer programs from pre-Kindergarten on
up,” said women’s soccer head coach Eric Schweizer.
TRU hosts the BCCAA Provincial Soccer Championships the
last weekend in October, and the national finals will be held
at Langara November 9th to 12th.

TRU Hoopster Plays in UK
KAMLOOPS-Star basketball player Skye
Buck, who was named BCCAA Player of the
Year in 2004, when he was also named a
CCAA Tournament Championship 1st team
All-Star, and a CCAA All-Canadian, is
shooting hoops for the Essex and Hertz
Leopards basketball team, which competes
in the English Basketball League (EBL).
“To find the team here was actually quite a
task,” said Buck. “I talked to former UCC
players who in their travels have come
across European teams and used some of
their advice.”
Buck flew over to Germany at the beginning of July to
attend a Professional Identification Camp in Bonn. He had
planned to email or phone teams in the numerous different
leagues they have in each country of Europe, with plans to
try out until he found one he could play on and could pay
me a reasonable salary.
He found himself on an unwanted European vacation,
however, when he discovered that none of the European
leagues train from the end of their season in
April/May until the end of August.
At the end of August he got on the Internet,
emailing teams, only to find out that most had
their teams finalized.
“I was blessed to find a good situation [with the
Leopards] as it is very difficult to come and look
for a team as an import player,” said Buck,
explaining that each European team is
normally allowed only two ‘imports’ or
North American players.
He’s now playing for the Essex and Hertz
Leopards, and coaching youth and high school age teams
for the Leopards.
When his contract is over at the end of April, Skye Buck
plans to return home to Clearwater and work for the
summer. If he’s re-signed by the team or can find another
to play on, he’ll fly back to Europe for another season; if
not, he’ll return to TRU to complete his biology degree (he
has one semester left to go) and then decide if he wants to
enter a teaching program.
