I long to dwell in
your tent forever
and take refuge in
the shelter of your
wings. Psalm 61:4
Buccaneers Backpack the Chattooga Trail
Excerpts from the boys daily journaling:
“Today we woke up and took down our tents. We all sat down and ate our breakfast. Then
we cleaned up and put on our packs. On the trail it was hard because of one, the heavy pack
and two, the steep incline. When we
started my whole body ached and I felt
dizzy. Then I drank some water and
felt better. I started to feel better after
Chief Doug fixed my pack. It turns out
if you talk while you hike it goes by
quickly. Then we came to a stream and
filled our water jugs. After lunch we
had siesta and then we put on our
packs and hit the trail. Once we got to
campsite we set up tents and put on
our swimming trunks and went swimming. And now, the most favorite time
of the day….bed!”
“Today was definitely the hardest day for me. Luckily, I
got the best sleep of the whole trip. Another plus is that
today we reached the highest point in all of South Carolina. I felt a little down during the start of the day but
I got excited when I realized I had the heaviest pack. I
had beat Chief Doug for weight. When we started I felt
like I had a cold and was breathing a bit hard. In a few
hours of pushing through we found the top. I find it
funny now, but we passed three or four mountaintops
and in my head I was like, is that it? Overall, it was
difficult but all worth it. The campsite we found even
has stone chairs. Today is a bit sad because tomorrows our last hike…I loved every step!”
“Today was a wonderful day.
...I got my pocket rod and
fished in a marvelous lake. I
taught Nick how to fish and I
caught about 20 fish. We
headed to a delicious breakfast. Then we cleaned up and
got a tour of a saw mill. After
we left we got black walnut to
carve on., We had an awesome time hiking up the
mountain...it was a beautiful
mountain. When we got to
campsite we set up tents and I
started looking for rocks. I
found some rare rocks in
caves I explored!”
“On this fantastic day we
hiked 11 miles to the Toxaway
river where we will layover.
Excellent teamwork was displayed. While hiking we took a
break to solve a couple problems. Some guys had trouble
getting up the mountain so
guys in the front had to stop.
To sum it up… it’s good day!”
