Weekly Plans for Ms. Hinton’s Classes

Note to parents: I will update my grades each Sunday. If for some reason I cannot update at that time, I
will notify you through my weekly plans page.
English 9
Monday – Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday – Students will take a quiz over “The Most Dangerous Game.” Students will be given several
scenarios in which to develop a narrative around a conflict. They will write a narrative based on one of
the scenarios.
Wednesday – Students will begin a study of Irony with a powerpoint presentation and the reading of
“The Necklace.”
Thursday – Students will complete an indirect characterization chart on Madame Loisel from “The
Necklace.” We will also review irony using the smart board.
Friday – Students will complete a plot summary diagram on “The Necklace,” and begin viewing a video
on Edgar Allan Poe in preparation for “The Cask of Amontillado” next week.
Pre-AP English 9
Monday –Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday – Students will be answering PARCC style questions on the locations in “By the Waters of
Babylon.” Students will use iPads, class computers, or their own devices for this activity. A Plot
Summary of the story will also be completed.
Wednesday – Diction will be the focus of the day. We will use the beginning of the story to analyze how
the author builds a sense of foreboding. The students will have a short writing activity as they write an
original narrative with a sense of foreboding.
Thursday – Students will begin working with a Laying the Foundation handout on the story which helps
the students learn about mood and tone.
Friday – Students will identify and analyze figurative language in four different excerpts from the story.
We will also continue working with tone, if time permits.
English 11
Monday –Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday –Students will view portions of “The New World.” Students will then read “The General
History of Virginia” by John Smith, using an active reading handout to help with comprehension.
Wednesday –Students will complete a cloze exercise on William Bradford. Students will then read “Of
Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford.
Thursday –Students will complete a Venn Diagram comparing Smith and Bradford, based on the reading
we have done. Students will view a short powerpoint on Anne Bradstreet in preparation for reading two
of her poems tomorrow.
Friday – Students will read and analyze two poems by Anne Bradstreet. Students will make inferences
regarding the life of the typical colonial woman based on these poems.
AP Language and Composition
Monday – Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday – Students will write one paragraph on each of the four commencement addresses we have read
analyzing the tone of each, and providing evidence from the speech to support their choice of tone.
Wednesday –Each student will assume a persona of a famous person and write a commencement address
which fits the tone and occasion for the person selected.
Thursday – Students will be reading and discussing William Safire’s “An Introductory Address.”
Friday – Students will read/listen to the inaugural addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F.
Kennedy. We will be evaluating these speeches in regard to Safire’s article, as well as for rhetorical
devices.
ACT Preparation Class – Chad Cargill Study Guide
Monday –Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday –Students will be reviewing conjunctions as we continue to study for the usage portion of the
ACT.
Wednesday – Students will begin reviewing verb use, singular and plural. We will complete extended
practice.
Thursday – Students will review subject/verb agreement with particular emphasis on distractors.
Friday –We will continue working with subject/verb agreement, with focus on problem areas where
mistakes are often made.
