Wallisdean Infant School: Year 1 Autumn 1 2016/17
Are all dinosaurs carnivores?
Dates to remember:
Tuesday 13th September – 9.00-10.00am All Year 1 Parents/Carers Playing with Letters and Numbers.
Tuesday 20th September - 2.30-3.10pm All Year 1 Parents/Carers are invited to join their child in making a dinosaur skeleton.
Monday 3rd October 2.30pm WIFA AGM – please come along & support your Parents’ Group, help to plan this year’s activities.
Tuesday 4th October – Year 1 trip to SEARCH Museum, Gosport.
Saturday 8th October – Family Photography Sessions (pre-booking essential) (WIFA fundraising).
Monday 10th October Whole school harvest drumming workshops.
Tuesday 11th October –Whole school Harvest Festival at St John’s Church. All Parents/Carers are invited to join us.
Monday 17th October Whole school Individual pupils’ school photos
Tuesday 18th October 2.30-3.10pm All Year 1 Parents/Carers are invited to visit our Year 1 Dinosaur Museum. Come and see
the children’s work displayed as museum exhibits in the Crocodiles classroom. Children will also be performing a themed dance.
English
Children will be learning about the layout of nonfiction books and how to write captions and labels.
We will be learning about stories from familiar
settings and will be reading, dramatising, sharing and
writing stories using the story mountain.
Dance
Children will be focusing on a series of movements to
create a dinosaur dance, which they will perform to
parents on their Dinosaur Museum day.
Science
Children will begin to learn how to conduct a fair
test and record their findings in simple ways. They
will be conducting an exciting dinosaur investigation.
Computing
Children will recap basic word processing skills and
begin to develop them further. They will be using
these skills to help make labels for their museum.
The children will also be using computer software to
create their own e-book.
Things to do at home:
 Read and share stories and non-fiction books.
 Research dinosaurs.
 Support your child with their reading, spellings,
mental maths and weekly homework.

Maths
We will be focusing on number skills;
counting forwards and backwards. We are
also focusing on addition and subtraction
and using this to solve problems. We will
be using a range of resources and
strategies to help.
History
Children will show their emerging
knowledge and understanding of the past
by recognising the difference between now
and then in the context of a timeline.
Design & Technology (D&T)
This half term children will be learning
how to design and make a model of a
dinosaur from recyclable material. They
will learn how to join and assemble
materials using a variety of resources and
in a variety of ways. They will also learn
how to decorate a model to make it look
more realistic. Children will learn simple
modelling skills and make a dinosaur bone
or fossil (parents invited into school to
help). These models will be displayed in our
museum.

Please send in your CLEAN recycling items such as kitchen roll tubes, cereal boxes, egg boxes,
tea bag boxes, lunch bar boxes etc for us to make the model dinosaurs. We would like a large
selection for the children to choose from please.  Thank you.
