R. Vernon Minton served as Director of the Alabama Marine Resources
Division from 1990 until his death in 2010. One of his goals while Director
was to provide diverse fishing opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Vernon
was particularly keen to introduce fishing to children. An idea of his to
make progress toward this goal was to develop a complex of fishing reefs
close to shore. His idea became a reality when permission to establish two
reef areas within three miles from shore near Perdidio Pass was posthumously
granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These areas, known as R.V.
Minton Artificial Reef Zone-East and R.V. Minton Artificial Reef ZoneWest, received a total of 220 six-foot tall concrete pyramids and 34 low
relief reefs. The low relief reefs will serve as habitat for juveniles of various
fish species. The pyramids were placed in clusters of three and are spaced
such that anglers can either anchor or troll over them. The reef zones will
serve as a lasting legacy to Vernon as their proximity to land will increase
fishing opportunities for people of all ages, particularly to families with
young children.
